  • Patent number: 6520706
Abstract: A support structure flange preform resembles the Greek letter “pi” and has a base with two legs extending therefrom. The preform is composed of a composite material that is formed from tows of woven or braided fiber. The tows are oriented to extend throughout each the base and legs. The preform may be either impregnated with a suitable thermoset resin, or may be unimpregnated so that resin may be infused at a later step of the overall manufacturing process. Two of the preforms are joined to a sine wave-shaped web of the structural beam. The web is formed from uncured, thermoset resin sheets that are reinforced with oriented fibers. The web has two outer laminates that sandwich a syntactic or foamed resin layer in between. The legs of each preform straddle one edge of the web and are shaped to both sides to the precise contours of the web. A laminate strip is positioned against the base of each preform to create a pair of flanges for the structural support member.

  • Patent number: 5657595
Abstract: A technique for applying high strength fiber fabric to strengthen beams and the connection between beams and either supported platforms or supporting vertical columns is disclosed. Fabric made of high strength fibers such as glass, boron, or carbon, is laid over the connection between a beam and a platform, or between a beam and a supporting column, and impregnated with an epoxy resin or other polymer matrix. The fabric may be additionally fastened to the structural member using adhesives, fabric fasteners, or bolts. The invention is particularly well suited for retrofitting bridges, freeway overpasses, parking structures, and the like to prevent failure during an earthquake.

  • Patent number: 5573345
Abstract: The connection of structural component parts in adjusting devices for seats, in particular for motor vehicle seats, is disclosed. In connecting structural component parts for adjusting devices for seats, the structural component parts to be rigidly connected with one another are welded in their connecting region. In order to prevent distortion of these structural component parts caused by the welding process, one structural component part has at least one bevel which projects toward the connection side and can be pressed into at least one recess of the other structural component part during a capacitor impulse welding process, this recess substantially conforming to the bevel with respect to shape and dimensions.

  • Patent number: 5536099
Abstract: An article, such as a swing arm for a glider chair, includes an elongated structural member made of high strength aluminum, and a pair of cast-in place preassembled bearings located in opposing ends of the structural member and facing in opposite directions. The preassembled bearings each include a first cup-shaped bearing member defining an outer depression for secure engagement by the material of the structural member and an inner ring-shaped ball race or track. The preassembled bearings each further include a second tubular bearing member defining an outer ring-shaped ball race or track and an internal passageway. Ball bearings are positioned between the first and second ring-shaped races for movably supporting the second bearing member on the first bearing member. Lubricant can be added through the passageway in the second bearing member into the area of the ball bearings for lubricating the ball bearings.
