Patent number: 6357194Abstract: The tapered dovetail joint is a method of joining two boards, or other rigid materials such as particleboard, wafer board, etc., by a unique type of modified dovetail joint. The modification to the classic dovetail joint includes tapering the dovetail pins as well as the dovetail tails with the same angle of taper in the same direction. The mating of this tapered dovetail joint will be greatly facilitated due to these corresponding tapers. The tapered nature of this joint minimizes difficulties in assembly due to the wedging action that takes place as the two boards are brought into union to create the joint. This wedging action allows the joint to be assembled even when there is moderate damage to the tails or pins including swelling—due to moisture, from the time of manufacture to time of assembly, impact damage, as well as minor manufacturing tolerance deficiencies in cutting of the pins and tails.Type: GrantFiled: March 11, 1999Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Inventor: Archie Valejo Jones, Jr.

Patent number: 6357960Abstract: A Non-Protrusive Expandable Clamping Device fastens together two bodies when conventional fastening devices cannot be used because of the unique space constraints and/or the shape of the joining surfaces of the bodies. The expandable clamping device, which has two tenons on opposite sides of its housing, can be slid into the bodies that have corresponding mortises on their joining surfaces to accommodate the tenons. The clamping device connects the bodies in one linear plane using motion in an orthogonal plane. When the clamping process is completed, facilitated by the rotational motion of a threaded bolt within the cavity inside the housing, what results is a joint that is strong in all directions as well as flush and airtight between the surfaces when an appropriate gasket or O-ring is utilized. Such a joint ensures proper alignment of the bodies while providing fixity in six degrees of freedom.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2001Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Charles S. Patent number: 6182491Abstract: A tool mount for mounting tool assemblies on a transfer press, or other type of automated assembly line, includes a bayonet which can be selectively inserted into a receiver mounted on the transfer press rail. The receiver includes a generally tapered channel which receives a tapered portion of the bayonet. The receiver and the bayonet thereby form a dove tail type of junction. The direction of taper is oriented such that the bayonet must be inserted from the back end of the receiver and pushed forwardly to secure it therein. A lock selectively secures the bayonet within the receiver. The lock includes a latch that engages a first cam surface to push the bayonet inwardly into the receiver and thereby prevent it from being removed, while simultaneously insuring a tight fit between the receiver and the bayonet. The lock latch further engages a second cam surface of the bayonet when the bayonet is to be removed from the receiver.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1999Date of Patent: February 6, 2001Assignee: CPI Products, L.C.Inventors: Maurice Perlman, Don Hufford

Patent number: 6176641Abstract: An attachment element for mounting or otherwise securing an ancillary device to the vicinity of a machine tool or the like provides quick locking/release on a dovetail element. The attachment member has a base member and a pair of spaced arms forming an open-mouthed way that slides over such a dovetail member. At a locking angle relative to the dovetail, the edges of the arms bear against the dovetail sides, and the edges of the distal ends of the arms bear against the surface from which the dovetail extends. That locking angle is less than 90° angle between the plane of the attachment element and the surface from which the dovetail extends. The attachment element is translatable from its locked orientation to a release orientation by a brief application of manual pressure on it.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1998Date of Patent: January 23, 2001Inventor: Noel J. Patent number: 6174102Abstract: A modular approach to the design of motion modules, e.g., positioning elements, is provided. Thus, a single positioning element can be integrated into a number of multi-axis configurations through combination with other basic positioning elements all of which share a modular interlocking feature. In an embodiment of the invention a motion module is disclosed which includes a base and a mobile stage. The base includes an exterior surface and a first interconnector located on the exterior surface. The mobile stage includes an exterior surface and a second interconnector. The mobile stage is positionable with respect to the base. The second interconnector is located on the exterior surface of the mobile stage. The first and the second interconnector are mutually engagable in releasable frictional engagement with second and first interconnectors of other motion modules for stackable interconnection therebetween.Type: GrantFiled: January 26, 1998Date of Patent: January 16, 2001Assignee: New Focus, Inc.Inventors: Khiem Ba Do, David F. Patent number: 6155524Abstract: A lock is provided to releasably secure a first member to a second member. The lock has two brackets, one attached to the first member and the other attached to the second member. The first is a locking slotted bracket and the second is a locking pin bracket. The locking pin bracket has pins with heads that extend outwardly from the locking pin bracket. The locking slotted bracket has a T-shape to receive the pins, and a lock lever that snaps into a locking position between the pin heads in the slot to hold the pins in the slot. The heads can be removed by deflecting the lock lever and sliding the heads of the pins out of the T-shaped slot. The lock lever is biased and flexible so that it rests in a locked condition. For longer or heavier structures or where position is important, a slotted bracket with a keyhole-shaped slot may be provided. The keyhole-shaped slot receives a head of a pin which will slide into a wider slot and into an undercut where it is retained.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1999Date of Patent: December 5, 2000Assignee: Legler Plating Works, Inc.Inventors: William P. Patent number: 6149388Abstract: A collar of a ceiling fan is composed of a plurality of sectors and each sector has a protrusion extending from a top thereof and a recess defined in an outside thereof. A resilient member is connected to each sector and includes a first portion having an aperture for receiving the protrusion, and a second portion which is a triangular member including two inclined sides. The resilient member is engaged with the recess of the sector corresponding thereto. The blade bracket has an end block which is engaged with the recess corresponding thereto and compressed by one of the inclined sides of the resilient member.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1999Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Inventor: Ming Hang Liao

Patent number: 6148710Abstract: A slitter-and-hole-punch and quick change adapter combination fits a bag machine or the like for punching holes and slits in a web of film material. A hole punch and a slitter blade are unitarily formed on a base member. Left and right resilient arms extend from distal to proximal, and have free ends that project proximally of the base member. The quick adapter can be an extruded block with a T-channel formed on a lower side with a passage or gap to accommodate the hole punch and the slitter blade. The T-channel has inwardly directed flanges that create side recesses to accommodate the resilient arms of the slitter-and-hole-punch. The side recesses have cooperating hollows to receive detents of the associated resilient arm. The slitter-and-hole-punch can be slid in and out of the T-slot, and when slid in, the detents on the resilient arms keep it in position. The slitter-and-hole-punch can be changed out in a few seconds by hand. The slitter-and-hole-punch units can be color coded, e.g., for gap size.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1999Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Pearl Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Earl T. Pottorff
