Fluid Storage In Earthen Cavity Patents (Class 405/53)
  • Publication number: 20100307147
Abstract: Energy can be stored by directing fluid into an expandable receptacle that has a relatively heavy mass above it. The fluid fills the receptacle such that it expands and lifts up the heavy mass above it. At a time when energy is needed, the fluid can be allowed to flow out of the receptacle and through a turbine or hydraulic motor to generate power or electricity. Intermittent or unreliable sources of power can be used to fill the receptacle, or power from a power grid can be used to fill the receptacle at times that are off-peak. During peak-load times, the potential energy of the fluid in the receptacle can be converted to power. The receptacle can also be used to control water flows and can provide a source of power and potable water to a community.

Abstract: A water detention system comprises a sub-base of crushed rock or stone overlying an impermeable layer which may be naturally-occurring, as in an impermeable sub-grade, or may be formed by an impermeable membrane laid over the sub-grade prior to the sub-base layer. Over the sub-base layer is an incompletely impermeable layer the impermeability of which is compromised by openings in the form of slits or by spacing between adjacent strips forming the layer. These openings allow water to percolate downwardly through the layer into the sub-base, but substantially inhibit the escape of moisture by evaporation thereby serving to retain the collected water. Above the incompletely impermeable layer may be a laying course of finer particulate material such as pea gravel over which may be laid a wear surface of slabs or blocks to form an area for traffic, such as a roadway or parking area.

Abstract: In the past, “compensated” salt caverns have operated with a compensating liquid, such as brine to displace a stored liquid, such as crude oil, when the stored liquid is needed on the surface. Virtually all of the stored liquid in a compensated salt cavern can be expelled from the salt cavern when it is filled with the compensating liquid. In the past, “uncompensated” salt caverns have been used to store gases, such as natural gas. Uncompensated caverns operate without any compensating liquid; instead they rely on pressure. Some of the stored gas (cushion gas) must always be left in an uncompensated salt cavern. This invention breaks with convention and uses a compensating liquid in a salt cavern to store gases which is a technique believed to be previously unknown. “Cushion gas” is not required because the compensating liquid displaces virtually all of the gas in the salt cavern.

  • Patent number: 7258508
Abstract: A gas storage well with a tubing string that is disposed within a wellbore communicating an underground storage cavern with the surface. A surface controlled subsurface safety and flow control system is provided within the wellbore so that all flow into or out of the well can be shut down rapidly in the event of an emergency. The safety and flow control system features a dual opening-style packer element that provides an annulus seal between the surrounding casing and the tubing string and between the casing and a pup joint that is located within the annulus. Both the tubing string and the pup joint contain surface controlled subsurface safety valves that are capable of quickly shutting off flow through both the flowbore and the annulus. Each valve can be opened or closed independently of the other.

  • Patent number: 7198432
Abstract: A water resource recycling system includes an environmental permeable flooring which allows the rain on the ground be accumulated and quickly permeate into the underground. A vertical overflow duct is drilled deep into the permeable stratum under the ground to further draw the rain through the impermeable (clay) stratum to the deeper groundwater stratum. A plurality of water reservoirs pre-buried under the ground nearby the vertical overflow duct are connected to the vertical overflow duct, thereby as the rain permeated from the ground surface to the vertical overflow duct becomes saturated, the rain will flow to the water reservoirs of different size. Each water reservoir is connected to a water-drawing pipe extended to the ground surface such that the rain can be completely absorbed and stored by the earth for preventing heat island effect.

  • Patent number: 7192218
Abstract: An underground porosity water storage reservoir minimizes the impacts on surface uses of the reservoir site. Furthermore, a method of operating an underground porosity storage reservoir minimizes damage to the reservoir due to injecting sediment-laden water or water that is chemically incompatible with the porous material in the underground reservoir. The underground porosity water storage reservoir reduces temperature impacts on surface waters due to the discharge of stored water. A method of using the porosity storage reservoir to minimize adverse temperature impacts when discharging water to a surface body is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7156579
Abstract: Disclosed is a process for manufacturing underground caverns suitable in one embodiment for storage of large volumes of gaseous or liquid materials. The method is an acid dissolution process that can be utilized to form caverns in carbonate rock formations. The caverns can be used to store large quantities of materials near transportation facilities or destination markets. The caverns can be used for storage of materials including fossil fuels, such as natural gas, refined products formed from fossil fuels, or waste materials, such as hazardous waste materials. The caverns can also be utilized for applications involving human access such as recreation or research. The method can also be utilized to form calcium chloride as a by-product of the cavern formation process.

  • Patent number: 7152675
Abstract: A method for the storage of hydrogen within a subterranean solid carbonaceous formation such as a coal seam. At least one well extends from the surface of the earth into the formation and a pressure gradient extends from the formation to the well to desorb methane within the formation and flow the methane into the well. Subsequent to recovery of the methane from the formation, gaseous hydrogen is injected into the well and into the formation. The injection of hydrogen is carried out under a pressure sufficient to cause the injected hydrogen to become absorbed within the matrix of the carbonaceous formation. Subsequent to storage of the hydrogen, a pressure gradient is established from the formation to the surface to withdraw previously introduced hydrogen to the surface. At least one common well is used for recovery of methane from the formation and introduction of hydrogen into the formation.

  • Patent number: 7150582
Abstract: A form suitable for use in an underground storage tank installation includes an upper portion sized and shaped to receive a street box and a lower portion that fits over and surrounds an upper portion of a riser on the tank. In preferred embodiments, the riser acts as a containment sump, a portion of the riser sidewall is double walled, and the bottom of the lower portion of the form extends to a depth below the top of the double walled portion of the riser. Preferably, the cross sectional shape of the form is circular and the bottom of the riser's lower portion is outwardly flanged, which serves to support the form during installation operations. The form has a stepped structure, with the upper portion of the form having a smaller circumference than the lower portion and a transition between the upper and lower portions forming the step.
