With Separate Means To Fasten Tool To Holder Patents (Class 407/102)
  • Patent number: 5076738
Abstract: A cutting tool assembly wherein a replaceable cutting insert is clampingly held between a pair of clamping jaws of an insert holder which are respectively provided with pairs of clamping surfaces one pair of clamping surfaces being of uniformly curved cross-sectional shape, while the other pair of clamping surfaces being of non-uniformly curved cross-sectional shape; the arrangement being such that when the insert is clamped between the jaws the respective clamping surfaces contact each other along discrete, axially directed locations which are symmetrically disposed with respect to and axially spaced from a median plane of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5046899
Abstract: A cutting insert comprising three or more upheaved portions having a height of 0.01 to 0.1 mm on at least one rake surface of the insert. The cutting insert can be stably secured by the support effect of the upheaved portions. In addition, stress concentration due to cutting impact does not occur and generation of breakage is reduced greatly, whereby even the cutting chip warped by case-hardening can be used for cutting without grinding.

  • Patent number: 4844667
Abstract: A tool holder for holding a replacable tool bit having a body part and a cutting edge, the tool holder having a body provided with first and second clamping members which co-operate, in the use, to clamp the tool bit to the body, the first clamping member having a tool bit engageable portion for engagement with the body part of the bit, a fulcrum portion in engagement with the tool holder body and a load applying portion whereat a load is applied to the first clamping member to cause the member to pivot about the fulcrum and so urge the bit, in use, towards the second clamping member. In one version the tool bit is of polygonal shape in side elevation and has a cutting edge at each corner of the polygon, so that a selected one of the cutting edges may be brought into an operative postiion relative to the tool holder by rotating the bit about the first clamping member so that the selected edge is presented to a work piece for cutting engagement therewith.

  • Patent number: 4834592
Abstract: An improved cutting insert with chip control features and a method for manufacturing the same. An insert body having wall regions, sides and top and bottom walls is adapted for mounting in a pocket in a holder. The insert body has cutting edges and a diagonal notch in the top and bottom sides. A land region extends rearwardly from the end wall region toward the respective top or bottom wall and defines a surface region of a predetermined width. A descending wall initiates in a portion of the land and terminates in a planar floor region having a forward, a rearward and opposed side edges. A back ramp extends upwardly from the planar floor rearward edge and terminates at the respective top or bottom wall. The end wall region can include at least one flat land region adjacent the land region. The flat land region defines a selectively removable portion of the end wall region and after any selective removal thereof represents no more than approximately one-third of the total width of the end wall region.

  • Patent number: 4327947
Abstract: A keeper spring for mounting a rotatable mining tool in the bore of a supporting block is formed of a unitary, metallic spring material, and includes a cylindrical member which is split along its axial length so as to be radially expansible and contractable, thereby defining a first spring portion. Three, equally spaced elongated arcuate, leaf spring protuberances project radially outwardly of the central region of the cylindrical member and are aligned with the axial length of the cylindrical member. Each protuberance is formed by providing two parallel slits in the wall of the cylindrical member, after which the material intermediate the slits is indented outwardly so as to effectively define a second spring portion.

  • Patent number: 4265325
Abstract: In a percussive rock bit or similar tool wherein cemented carbide cutting inserts are retained in open radial slots in the head of the tool, an improved method of mechanically retaining the inserts. The inserts are provided with a plurality of elongated radially aligned serrulations along each flank thereof, the thickness of the insert as measured between the crests of opposing serrulations being such as to provide a substantial interference with the slot wall. The inserts may be cold fitted by sliding along the slot, following which body material is peened so as to overlay a small chamfer at the base of the outwardly facing wall of the inserts. The inwardly facing walls of the inserts may be inclined so as to retain the center plug of the rock bit mechanically.

  • Patent number: 4063841
Abstract: An indexable insert for cutting internal and external grooves in a workpiece is adapted for mounting and securing upon a tool holder having a pocket therein; whose bottom edges define an obtuse angle. The insert comprises an elongated body of rectangular cross section having a flat top surface along one edge of the body and a pair of angular bottom surfaces extending from a central point of the body and inclined toward and extending to said top surface at a corresponding included obtuse angle. These inclined surfaces define a pair of separately usable transverse cutting edges at the opposite ends of said body which is adapted for snug registry within said pocket. Said pocket also defines within the tool holder a back up plate against which the insert bears. The insert, one or more, is held down within said pocket by a clamp which bears across the top edges of said inserts. A cam lock device is also mounted upon said holder to apply lateral pressure to the insert holding it snugly against the back up wall.
