  • Patent number: 6840718
Abstract: A finishing tool rides upward and downward on the surface of a tap. A spring urges the finishing tool toward an outer end of the tap. The finishing tool is guided along a helical flute on the surface of the tap. Cutting edges on the finishing tool are ground to deburr the perimeter of a hole being tapped either during entry of the tap into the hole or during withdrawal. When the cutting edges provide deburring during withdrawal, the helix angle of the helical flute must be less than a critical helix angle to avoid jamming. When the cutting edges provide deburring during entry of the tap, the critical helix-angle limitation is eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6637989
Abstract: A centering feature (230) on a drill bit (110) configured without a pointed tip, formed as an opening (230) between first (206) and second (208) relatively angularly inclined portions of a work engaging end (116) of the drill bit (110). The first portion (206) of the work engaging end (116) is defined by a cutting edge (134), and the second portion (208) is defined by an end face side boundary (216) transversely aligned with the cutting edge (134). The cutting edge (134) and end face side boundary (216) are offset from each other to create the opening (230), which permits the drill operator to view a punch mark or other indication on the work piece where the center (232) of the intended hole is to be located. The drill operator positions the medial termination point (212) of the cutting edge (134) of the drill bit (110) over the center hole location (232) preparatory to contacting the drill bit (110) against the work piece to cut the hole.

  • Patent number: 5800148
Abstract: A rotary tool for forming a blind-tapered hole in a workpiece includes an elongate shaft having a bit shank on one end and a base plate secured to the other end. A collar, mounted for axial movement on the shaft, is biased away from the base plate to a first position on the shaft by a return spring. At least two cutting blades are pivotally attached to the collar. A portion of the length of each cutting blade is fixedly circumferentially and radially supported relative to the shaft by a blade guide that rotates with the shaft such that the angle formed between each cutting blade and the shaft's rotational axis increases with increasing axial displacement of the collar on the shaft away from the first position.

  • Patent number: 5775853
Abstract: An improved device and method for use in machining a workpiece, which includes a tool body with a machining tool having two machining surface, wherein one of the machining surfaces is being selectively movable between a retracted position and an extended position. A supporting mechanism is sized and configured to substantially restrict movement of the machining tool relative to the tool body while the one machining surface is positioned in the retracted position. Preferably, the supporting mechanism includes an interior surface having a frustoconical-shaped tapered configuration, and the reciprocable machining surface has an engageable surface sized and configured to be frictionally engaged against the interior surface. In a preferred embodiment, the interior surface has an angle relative to the longitudinal axis of the tool body from about 20 to about 50 degrees, and more preferably about 40 degrees.

  • Patent number: 5203652
Abstract: A tap and die wrench for threading flat and round workpieces and, formed of hardened steel or a softer material with hardened steel inserts at those points sustaining torque and tensile forces during operation, provides a body member adapted for receiving and retaining taps and a base adapted for receiving and holding round or hex dies, and the body member and base are mounted upon parallel alignment rods and held apart by a spring bias effected through springs mounted on each of the rods. A tap retained within the body member is tensioned away from the workpiece for simultaneous self-aligning during the tapping process. A die guide insertable into the centralized opening of the body member surrounds and guides the workpiece during the external threading process.

  • Patent number: 4749315
Abstract: A tool is provided for drilling a hole in a construction material precisely concentric to a nearly inaccessible reference aperture situated opposite the side of the construction material from which the hole must be cut. A typical application is in cutting a sprinkler head receiving hole concentric with the open end of a downwardly directed drop of a sprinkler distribution system. The tool includes an elongated rod which carries a sliding guide member constrained between a stop positioned at one end of the rod and a compression spring urging the guide member toward the stop. Intermediate the length of the rod, there is provided a hole saw retaining shoulder against which a conventional hole saw of the desired diameter cut to receive a sprinkler head may be affixed with its teeth directed toward the rod first end.

  • Patent number: 4090804
Abstract: A circular cutting head assembly and centering drill of the type used, for example, in cutting holes in structural members such as I-beam webs, and flanges. The circular drill is characterized by a cylindrical body portion, supporting an inner centering drill plug.
