  • Patent number: 7444757
Abstract: Disclosed is an alignment tool. A body of the alignment tool fits into a turret block, while a head holds a machine-tool. During the alignment process, the head and body are allowed to move relative to one another in two dimensions perpendicular to an axis of rotation of a spindle. To align the alignment tool, a workpiece is inserted into the spindle. As the workpiece spins, a machine-tool cuts a taper in it. An “empty” alignment tool is brought to bear against the tapered workpiece. The axis of the head of the empty alignment tool, and thus the axis of any machine-tool held by the head, is aligned with the axis of the tapered workpiece and, thus, with the axis of the spindle. Once the machine-tool is aligned with the spindle, the head and body are tightly fastened together to preserve the alignment.

The spindle 19 has one end protruding from the housing 9 to the exterior, the one end being provided with a spindle chuck 21 for retaining a tap T.

  • Patent number: 6276878
Abstract: A horizontal cutting type-tapping machine has a vertically extending drive shaft and a pair of detachably engaged surface gears. The surface gears have a curved upper surface gear, fixedly connected to the drive shaft, and a lower surface gear. A gearbox is connected to the lower surface gear and converts a horizontal rotating force of the drive shaft to a vertical rotating force. An externally threaded shaft is horizontally mounted to a vertically rotating gear of the gearbox. An internally threaded sleeve is disposed in the gear housing of the gear box and engages the externally threaded shaft so as to be horizontally moved by rotation. A saw part is fixed to a front end of the internally threaded sleeve. An internal tube, mounted around the drive shaft, has a thread at its upper portion and a lower portion with a diameter smaller than that of the upper portion. A vertically moving sleeve is slidably mounted around the lower portion of the drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 6257808
Abstract: The invention provides a flexible guide tube with prongs or other work-engaging means at one end. These prongs may be stabbed into an obstruction in a hollow wall to set the position of a throughhole and to hold the tubular guide in a fixed position against the torsional, or other, forces of a drill or other cutting tool used to cut the hole. The drill may be rotated by means of a flexible shaft running within the guide tube. After a throughhole is cut in the obstruction, a line-fishing member may be inserted through the guide tube and the obstruction and into a space on the distal side of the obstruction. The line-fishing apparatus may comprise an end portion having a collapsed state in which it can pass through the guide tube and an expanded state in which it provides a visible target that can be readily engaged by tools operated by a worker on the distal side of the obstruction who is prohibited from getting any closer than a few yards from the target.

  • Patent number: 6161563
Abstract: A plumbing tool for providing a passageway through a blockage, such as a test cap or other blockage, in a fluid-carrying line. During the rough-in plumbing phase of construction, the drain pipe leading from the plumbing system in a building to the city sewer main in the street is positively sealed off by a test cap welded in the pipe at the location of the clean-out. Pressurizing the rough-in plumbing to test the same can then proceed knowing that if any leaks occur, they are in the branch plumbing on the building side of the test cap and not at or in the test cap. Following successful completion of the initial test, the top-out plumbing is completed, leaving the test cap welded in the clean-out or drain pipe. After the roof vents are in, the top-out test of the plumbing system is made, again knowing that if the system shows any leaks, they are the result of a failure in the plumbing work and not a failure of the test cap.

  • Patent number: 5836725
Abstract: A method and machine for repairing overhead cam engine cylinder heads and the like. The method includes the steps of removing the caps from the bases of the bearing towers or housings, removing material from the legs of the caps to reduce their height, replacing the caps on the bases, and boring the resulting bearings to produce bearings of the proper diameter. The machine includes a device for machining a bearing cap and a device for boring the bearings. The device for boring the bearings has a boring bar that is supported only at opposite ends of the cylinder head. The bar does not sag or chatter because it is made of an extremely hard and dense material such as a dense tungsten alloy or a ceramic-coated metal.

Abstract: A threaded hole may be formed in a lid of an underground petrol tank without emptying the tank or removing the lid, using a tool (FIG. 3) having a taper tap section (61), an intermediate tap section (62) and a final tap section (63). At the leading end of the tool, there is a reamer section (60) and supported on the free end of the tool is a centerless hole cutter (50). A resilient mounting transmits drive from the main part of the tool to the cutter (50), but allows the cutter to float. A sleeve (23) surrounds the tool, so that a column of inert gas may be caused to lie in the cutting region.
