Abstract: An insert portion (3) of a reamer (1) is fixed, using screws (8), to a leading end portion of a body (2A). The insert portion (3) is configured by overlaying an insert (4) for finish machining and an insert (5) for rough machining, and forms a right hand cut right hand helix. On respective mating faces of the inserts (4, 5), convex portions and concave portions of the mating face of the insert (4) overlap with concave portions and convex portions of the mating face of the insert (5). The reamer (1) can enlarge a hole formed in a workpiece or change a shape of the hole. The inserts (4, 5) simultaneously cut an inner peripheral face of the hole, and can thus perform rough machining and finish machining in one pass. By overlapping the convex portions and the concave portions of each of the mating faces of the inserts (4, 5), they partially overlap in their respective thickness directions. A protrusion length of the insert portion (3) can thus be shortened.

  • Patent number: 5902076
Abstract: A magnetic based drill assembly comprising a support platform mounted to the magnetic base for attachment to a work piece includes a feed mechanism operatively connected to the platform for rectilinear movement between a fully retracted position and a fully extended position. The feed mechanism includes a splined collar slidably mounted to the splined arbor for movement relative to the splined arbor and for rotatably supporting a drive tool. The motor is mounted in a stationary position offset and substantially parallel to the feed mechanism to reduce overall height and weight of the drill assembly. As the splined arbor is located within a cylindrical feed arbor a liquid coolant can be directly injected on the drill tool and workpiece during operation of the drill assembly. Further, an electrical feed rate monitor provides a signal to the user to indicate the optimal feed rate of the drill tool.

  • Patent number: 5642969
Abstract: A machine tool comprises a mounting member for attachment to a workpiece. The mounting member includes a bearing portion that has an external surface of circular cross section and is formed with an aperture in its external surface. A utility device has an internal peripheral surface that defines a cylindrical cavity for receiving the bearing portion of the mounting member in a manner that allows the utility device to move axially and rotationally relative to the mounting member. A clamp is actuable when the utility device is fitted to the bearing portion of the mounting member for releasably retaining the utility device against axial and rotational movement relative to the bearing portion. A spring-loaded detent member projects into the cylindrical cavity from the peripheral surface and is receivable in the aperture of the bearing portion for retaining the operating assembly against axial and rotational movement relative to the bearing portion in the event that the clamp is not actuated.

  • Patent number: 5076740
Abstract: A toolholder for holding a cutting tool such as a tap in the spindle of a machine tool includes a torque-limiting clutch to prevent excessive load being applied to the cutting tool. The clutch comprises at least one ball located in sockets in the driving and driven members but there is an arrangement, whereby at a predetermined critical torque, the ball moves axially out of engagement with one of the driving and driven members to disconnect the drive, and a deflecting device engages with the ball and moves it to a position where it does not encounter the socket from which it has been released or any similar sockets. This prevents wear on the clutch. The toolholder also comprises a conduit system for cutting fluid being fed into a bore in the cutting tool. The conduit extends through a telescopic part of the toolholder and includes a flexible part deviating from a straight linear form, so that it can extend by tending to straighten, in order to accommodate telescopic extension of the toolholder.
