These recessed grooves are cut by material removing tools which can be pressed radially outwardly, while a drive shaft simultaneously rotates these tools. For this purpose, an axial movement of an adjustment body is converted into a tilting movement of pivotable shafts which carry the material removable tools, whereby the adjustment body is moved linearly by a hydraulic lifting device. The material removing tools extend radially away from the lower ends of the pivotable shaft. The common adjustment movement of all of the pivotable shafts takes place independently of the rotation of the driven shaft.

Abstract: A drill for performing a roughing cut in a workpiece as the drill is advanced, and performing a finishing cut as the drill is retracted. A blade carrier is mounted eccentrically on the drill to be movable between first and second positions. In the first position, the blade is located for a roughing cut. In the second position, the blade is shifted radially for a finishing cut. A spring biases the carrier toward the second position and yields when the carrier moves to the first position. The spring bias is too weak to overcome reaction forces acting on the blade during a roughing cut, wherein the roughing cut reaction forces cause the carrier to be shifted to the first (roughing cut) position. The spring bias is strong enough to overcome the weaker reaction forces occurring during a finishing cut, so that the carrier is automatically shifted to the second (finishing cut) position when the drill is withdrawn through the workpiece.

Abstract: Drilling device for forming a borehole with an undercut, includes a cutting edge support mounted in a bearing housing so that it can rotate about an axis of rotation and pivot about a pivot axle extending transversely of the axis of rotation. A drive member via a drive shaft rotates the bearing housing and the cutting edge support. Initially, the drilling device forms a cylindrical borehole until the bearing housing contacts the material in which the borehole is formed. Then, due to relative axial displacement between the drive shaft and the bearing housing, the cutting edge support is pivoted and the cutting edges at the end of the cutting edge support within the base of the borehole makes an undercut. A stop in the bearing housing engages the cutting edge supports and limits its pivotal movement. A spring within the bearing housing returns the cutting edge support to its starting position when it is no longer pivoted to form the undercut.

  • Patent number: 4467679
Abstract: A tool head, in particular for turning and boring operations, comprises a base, an eccentric sleeve disposed therein, and a tool holder whose rearward portion engages in the eccentric bore of the eccentric sleeve, has a mounting for a tool, and may be displaced relative to the base, and secured in the position set. The eccentric sleeve forms a setting member rotatably mounted in the base and has a peripheral portion located between a front contact surface of the base and a support surface of the tool holder. The tool holder is guided so as to be non-rotatable relative to the base but displaceable transversely. An abutment for one part of a clamping device is provided on the base so that it is non-rotatably connected thereto or formed thereby. The clamping device clamps the tool holder at its support surface to the base at the contact surface thereof, also clamping the peripheral portion of the eccentric sleeve.

  • Patent number: 4439074
Abstract: A boring tool includes a central shaft which carries a tool head on a shaft working end and which is mounted in a rotatable bushing for eccentric movement in the tool body. For work adjustment up to 1.00 inch on diameter, the tool head is radially slidable on the working end of the central shaft by an adjustment screw arrangement while the shaft is held by the bushing. For micro-adjustment, the bushing is rotated to move the shaft working end in an eccentric path with a key on the tool body translating this movement into radial micro-adjustment of the tool head to 0.0001 inch.

  • Patent number: 4224846
Abstract: A turning boring head or the like has a tool, designed for radial adjustment, and whose tool support is able to undergo feed motion, using liquid power into a position dependent on the desired size of the bore being machined. The bore rod body has not only a pressure medium powered tool support designed for fine positioning of the fine-adjustment cutting tool, but furthermore at least one further tool support for a further cutting tool.

  • Patent number: 4154555
Abstract: A machine tool having a boring bar carrying cutting tools and mounted for rotative adjustment on a rotary driven spindle with its axis offset from the axis of the spindle. An additional cutting tool is mounted for radial adjustment on the spindle individually of the boring bar. The tools on the boring bar and the cutting tool on the spindle are adjusted radially by means of a helically splined nut engaged with a similarly splined shaft which is rotated relative to the spindle in response to axial displacement of the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4120599
Abstract: A single point boring tool using an eccentric for varying the radius of the cutting edge of the tool from the longitudinal axis of the tool to thereby vary the bore being machined. The holder tool can be rotated a full 360.degree., therefore a small eccentric can effect a relatively large variation in bore diameters. The tool holder is rotated after loosening fastener means to obtain the desired radius of bore and then locked in place by tightening the fastener means. Index markings on the tool shaft and tool holder enable unskilled personnel to adjust the bore size with precision.

  • Patent number: 4053252
Abstract: A cutting tool holder for rotatably supporting a cutting bar is provided in which the radial distance between the axis of rotation of the cutting tool holder and the cutting edge of the cutting bar is adjustable. The cutting tool holder comprises a hub member having one axial end secured to a rotating machine and an eccentric bore formed in the other axial end of the hub member. The cutting bar is secured to a bar holder having a shank which is rotatably received in the eccentric bore. A circular drive plate is fastened across the inner axial end of the bar holder and limits axial movement, but permits rotation of the bar holder within the eccentric bore. A compressible biasing member urges axial separation of the drive plate and the housing to functionally lock the bar against rotation during use.

  • Patent number: 3961857
Abstract: A cutting tooth is carried on the outer end portion of a shaft which is eccentrically mounted within a power-rotated boring bar and which may be selectively turned within the bar to enable the tooth to be adjusted between an inactive retracted position and an active cutting position. By sliding the shaft in one direction, serrated rings mounted on the outer end portion of the shaft and within the outer end portion of the bar may be uncoupled to permit turning of the shaft. When the shaft is slid in the opposite direction, the rings are recoupled to establish a torsionally stiff rotational drive to the tooth by way of the outer end portions of the bar and the shaft. Turning of the shaft to adjust the tooth to its cutting position also effects outward adjustment of support pads for maintaining the outer end portion of the bar in a stable radial position during the boring operation.
