Abstract: A drill bit has an annular cutting edge to form a hole in a workpiece. The drill bit is received within a drill and rotated above 20,000 revolutions per minute. A distal end of the drill bit defines an annular edge surrounding a hollow cavity. The annular edge both cuts and melts the workpiece during formation of the hole. The drill bit also defines an exit hole passing perpendicular to an axial center of the drill bit. The exit hole and the hollow cavity join within an interior of the drill bit to form a material passage way. Core material cut from the workpiece is collected within the hollow area of the drill bit during operation. Thereafter, retraction of the cutter leaves the sleeve in place to secure the tapping apparatus to the conduit and establish fluid communication therethrough. The cutter and sleeve preferably have different thread pitches so that the sleeve advances at a slightly faster rate than the cutter. This facilitates sealing engagement between the external surface of the main conduit and the body. Additionally, a one-way drive arrangement is provided between the sleeve and cutter so that once the sleeve is positioned in place, the cutter can be removed without altering the location of the sleeve.

  • Patent number: 5408901
Abstract: A packing extractor tool (10 ) for removing packing (27) from a valve assembly (20), is described. The extractor tool is comprised of an arcuate sidewall (11) having an opening (17) that enables the extractor tool to be mounted around a valve stem (25) without removing the handle wheel (37) from the valve stem. One end of the sidewall of the extractor tool is provided with sawblade teeth (13). The other end of the sidewall has a handle (15) that enables the extractor tool to be rotated around the valve stem to that the sawblade teeth can cut into and disintegrate the packing. A distal portion (15B) of the handle can be angled upward which helps a user apply a downward force to the extractor tool so that the sawblade teeth can penetrate into and disintegrate the packing.

  • Patent number: 5393175
Abstract: A diamond core drill using a sealed core bit is fastened centrally by means of a hollow shaft with a slanted cut at one end, that is used in a wedging manner to secure the tool against the work surface. This eliminates the need for an exterior frame and thus permits the use of large hole saws up to 48", held by a simple and economical tool. The tool feed towards the surface is controled via an advance control nut that screws on the filleted part of the shaft. The tool has a water feed system that entraps the water in a chamber formed by the barrel of the saw and the surface to be cut, that forces the water to seep along the sawing gap thus facilitating lubrification of the core bit. The resulting configuration is such as to allow for a single tool operator.

  • Patent number: 5327923
Abstract: A valve for installation on a flow line while the flow line is under pressure. The valve includes a two-part valve body and a valve cartridge. Each body portion has a semi-cylindrical channel sized to mate with the flow line. The body portions are secured together with a portion of the flow line enclosed and sealed in the channels of the body portions. A throughbore extends through the two body portions and fully intersects the channels of the two body portions. One end of the throughbore is adapted for attachment of a cutting tool, which is used to cut out the portion of the flow line disposed in the throughbore. After the flow line is cut, the valve cartridge is directed into operating position. A valve stem nut, a valve cap, a valve plug, gaskets, seals and connectors are provided to close and seal both ends of the throughbore.

  • Patent number: 5316037
Abstract: A valve adapted for insertion in a pressurized fluid flow line for blocking and sealing the flow of fluid through the line without disconnecting the line and to maintain the pressure in the upstream end of the line. The valve includes two body portions which may be clamped on the fluid flow line to form a valve body in which is adjustably mounted a shaft carrying an annular hole cutter and a tubular seal. The shaft is rotatable for driving the annular hole cutter through the line and to position the tubular seal in the hole cut through the line to block and seal flow through the downstream portion of the line.

  • Patent number: 5205685
Abstract: A hole saw, especially suited for sheet-metal work, incorporates an annular ring surrounding the body of the saw, and located at an end adjacent its cutting edge. In accordance with the invention, the diameter of the ring is selected larger than that of the cutting teeth, to operate as a "stop" in preventing the saw from undesirably extending into the cavity where the saw makes its cut, beyond a predetermined amount. As will be described, the annular ring allows for a constant, equal pressure to be applied in using the hole saw across a work-piece while, at the same time, limiting any accidental damage to be done inside the work-piece if the hole saw were to penetrate too far.
