  • Patent number: 5964016
Abstract: In the case where a product having a free-curved surface is obtained, a machining work is performed by separate machine tools. Therefore, works of attaching and removing a half-machined product are necessary. Consequently, a lot of working time and labor are required. Also in an automatic production system, productivity is lowered if the system is stopped by failure in gripping during the attaching and removing works and an enormous equipment cost is required. A machining apparatus M comprises a main chuck head 1 having a control axis for holding and rotating a long bar member W, a head stock assembly 3 having three or more control axes, and a bar member feeder 5 for feeding the long bar member W to the head stock assembly 3. These four axes are simultaneously controlled to manufacture a plurality of products V having free-curved surfaces from the long bar member W.

  • Patent number: 5150518
Abstract: To manufacture inner and outer parts for a rotary piston machine in which said parts have parallel axes and have interengaging helical engaging surfaces having convolutions in numbers differing by one and are operable to perform relative to each other rotating and eccentric revolving movements, the helical engaging surface of at least one of said parts is machined by a cutting tool, which is rotated about an axis which is parallel to and spaced from the axis of the part that is to be machined.

  • Patent number: 5077876
Abstract: An improved spindle assembly for a single or a multiple spindle machine is disclosed. An outer tubular member is mounted for rotation by the spindle machine. An inner shaft is positioned within the tubular member and a collet is movable between a locked and an unlocked position. A workpiece can be removed from the unlocked collet by high pressure liquid from the inner shaft. In one embodiment the inner shaft is rotated independently from the tubular member and is also axially reciprocable. A tool mounted on the inner shaft provides for interior machining at the same time as an exterior operation is being performed. In another embodiment the collet remains axially stationary.

  • Patent number: 4757598
Abstract: A transmission is disclosed for rotating the work supporting chuck assembly of a power driven threading machine at low and high speeds. The transmission includes a sun gear, a ring gear coaxial with the sun gear and axially shiftable between first and second positions relative to the sun gear and to a fixed clutch component, and a plurality of planet gears between the sun gear and ring gear. The sun gear is motor driven to provide the transmission input, and the planet gears are connected to and drive an output sprocket wheel drivingly connected to the chuck assembly. The first position of the ring gear provides clutched interengagement thereof with the sun gear for rotation therewith, whereby the planet gears rotate therewith to rotate the output sprocket wheel at a first speed equal to the speed of rotation of the sun gear.

  • Patent number: 4410025
Abstract: A method and a machine for automatically making wooden chair seats. A feed conveyor is provided to sequentially advance a plurality of boards in a series spaced apart manner along a plurality of separate work stations. Board positioning and holding elements are provided at each of the stations to hold the boards thereat at a precise location to effect a work function to the boards. The displacement of the boards are also synchronized together whereby they are displaced from all of the stations simultaneously. A drilling station is provided to drill holes on at least one side face of the boards. A routing station routes a pattern in a surface of the boards. A sanding station sands the routed surface and thereafter the boards are conveyed to a contour cutting station where a predetermined peripheral outline is cut in the boards. An edge sander than smoothes out the cut outline edge of the boards and a transfer device transports the boards after they have been completely machined into seats to an unloading area.

  • Patent number: 4375708
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for machining a tubular workpiece to form an internally threaded coupling having a faced and chamfered end and a tapered counterbore. The method includes forming a tool support bar having a longitudinal axis and supporting on the tool support bar first and second tools having cutting edges and a thread cutting tool. The method further includes rotating the workpiece about its longitudinal axis and positioning the tool support bar relative to the workpiece such that the axis of the tool support bar and the workpiece lie in one plane and are substantially parallel to each other. The method further includes moving the support bar to chamfer and face the end of the workpiece with the first tool, moving the tool support bar to taper and counterbore the interior of the workpiece with the second tool, and moving the support bar to thread the tapered interior of the workpiece with the thread cutting tool.

  • Patent number: 4097175
Abstract: A drilling machine comprises a ram movable up and down on a carriage slidably mounted on a horizontal crossrail. A toolhead is mounted on the bottom end of the ram for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis at right angles with the crossrail and is pivoted to a desired angular position by a first drive shaft within the ram via bevel gearing. Rotatably mounted in the toolhead for rotation about an axis lying in a vertical plane is a toolholder which rigidly supports a drill and which is driven from a second drive shaft within the ram via bevel gearings. Preferably, the machine further comprises a rack-and-pinion mechanism driven from the second drive shaft for securely but releasably locking a turning tool at the bottom end of the ram, so that the machine can be used also for turning operation as a workpiece is rotated on a turntable. This turntable is of course held stationary during drilling operation.
