A means comprises sections for feeding in (1) profiles, working (2) and feeding out (4) the worked profiles. Additionally there may be between the working section and the feeding out section a device (3) for cutting of worked profiles to correct length. The means also comprises arrangements for linear movement of the profile through the different sections. A work station position within a working section comprises a frame or similar device which in itself comprises several, preferably four, working units, whereby each working unit may carry one or more working tools (22), e.g. cutting mill or drill, which during the working stages can move with at least three degrees of freedom.

Abstract: A drilling tool is adapted for incorporation into a riveting robot. For this purpose, the drilling tool with its spindle head is mounted on a slide that is motor driven for displacement in the Z-direction of an XYZ coordinate system. The slide in turn is mounted on a console provided with a flange to be secured or docked to the riveting robot. The console is rotatable about its longitudinal axis that extends perpendicularly to the drill spindle axis and intersects the latter approximately in the center of the spindle axis. The drill spindle is rotatably mounted in a spindle head and carries a drive wheel approximately in the center between the spindle ends. The drive wheel is meshing or cooperating with a power transmission train from a motor that is also secured to the slide and moves up and down with the slide and thus with the spindle head. Another motor drives the up and down movement of the spindle head. This type of arrangement permits positioning the drill bit in difficult locations.

Abstract: A drill press is provided for use in conjunction with a three dimensional stereotaxic manipulator. The drill press includes a body carried by a movable member of the manipulator wherein the body has upper and lower segments and at least one guide shaft extending between the segments. A slide which carries a drill for forming skull openings is driven by a dial cord drive. The dial cord extends around a drive shaft so that rotation of the drive shaft by a handle causes the slide to move upwardly and downwardly to safely and quickly accomplish the formation of a skull opening in a small animal typically used in brain research.

Abstract: An apparatus for cutting threads in holes of fabricated parts including a vertical support shaft supporting at least one arm extended out over the part with a tap coupled to a motor on the end of each of the at least one arm. The arm is supported on the vertical shaft by a joint support which can be rotated around the vertical shaft and slide vertically on the shaft. A spring on the shaft is biased to return the joint support to a rest position. The vertical shaft can also be positioned vertically by virtue of a manually operated friction drive located in the base. These several degrees of freedom enable a user to position a tap in any one of a multiplicity of holes located over a large area of the part. A means and method for securing the tap in the tap chuck is provided.

Abstract: A drilling unit mounted on an arm of an assembly robot. In order to enable a drill bush of a nose piece, for guiding a drill, to be adjustably moved into exactly registering relation with a bore of a template laid on a workpiece, the nose piece is mounted on a first cylindrical member which is mounted on a second cylindrical member through a first compliance mechanism comprising elastic support members which constitute oblique links of a trapezoidal link mechanism having an imaginary intersection of the oblique links at a front end of the drill bush. The drill bush can therefore make a swinging motion about the intersection. The second cylindrical member is mounted on a guide plate through a second compliance mechanism which enables the second cylindrical member and hence the drill bush to adjustably move in a radial direction of a rotational shaft of the drilling unit.

Abstract: A robotic positioning device has a support structure and a tool implement holding member which is positional within the three dimensional space of the support structure. The tool implement holding member is connected to the support structure utilizing five positioning members. Each of these positioning members is connected to the tool implement holding member. Three of the positioning members are connected to the holding member at a first common center of rotation and the other two positioning members are connected to the holding member at a second common center of rotation. Each of the positioning members is attached to the support structure utilizing a connecting member which allows for the positioning member to freely pivot with respect to the support structure and additionally allows the member to move with respect to the support structure axially along an axis of the member. This is accomplished by moving the members axially toward or away from the support structure.

  • Patent number: 4332066
Abstract: A tool holder has compliance features that allow a hole to be drilled at high tolerances by a remote controlled control arm. The holes are drilled in a workpiece that has a template secured over it with guide holes for positioning the holes to be drilled. A self-feeding drill of the type that will simultaneously rotate and advance a drill bit is mounted in a support. A sleeve is carried at the forward end of the support for enclosing the drill bit. An index carriage moves the support forwardly into the guide hole after the control arm has substantially aligned the sleeve with the guide hole. Compliance mechanisms in the support allow the entire drill, drill bit and sleeve to move as a unit a limited amount parallel to and angularly with respect to the template and the indexing carriage, to allow advancement of the sleeve into the guide hole even though there may have been initial misalignment. The compliance mechanisms preferably include an inner guide member mounted within an outer guide member.
