  • Patent number: 5971679
Abstract: A splash guard device is utilized in a machine tool to prevent chips and coolant from flying to the outside of a cutting compartment, while permitting smooth pallet changing operation. The splash guard device includes a splash guard door capable of up/down movement and swivellable about a vertical swivel axis in the course of pallet changing operation and an elevationally movable top sealing member having a lowered position in which it remains in contact with the top edge of the splash guard door and a raised position in which it is spaced apart from the top edge of the splash guard door. Responsive to the upward movement of the splash guard door, a linkage mechanism is adapted to cause the top sealing member to move from the lowered position into the raised position. A pair of fixed side splash guard walls extend in a spaced-apart parallel relationship with respect to the corresponding side edge of the splash guard door.

  • Patent number: 4552494
Abstract: This safety shield is collapsible and for use with a vertical drill press to protect the press operator from injury. The shield includes a pair of interconnected telescoping hollow cylinders, with the top cylinder of elongated shape that is mounted to a non-rotating, vertically movable drill housing member, while the lower cylinder is also of elongated shape and it is suspended from the top cylinder and is capable of telescoping with respect to the top cylinder. The top end of the top cylinder has a novel adjustable clamping collar so the collar may expand and contract, and fastening means are used for tightening and loosening the collar with respect to the drill housing member. The lower cylinder of the shield is also fitted with an enlarged collar adjacent its top end of about the same size as the adjustable collar of the top cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4541759
Abstract: The invention concerns a portable electromagnetic pneumatic power drill. It may be used to make rivet or bolt holes in structural steel girders in guilding and bridge construction. The base of the drill stand is secured to the steel workpiece by electromagnetism. Exhaust air from the drill head cools the electromagnetic base as well as the bit and workpiece. Drill chips are diverted by the exhaust stream and deflected from the rack slide mechanism by a shield. This allows the slide to approach the base and workpiece very closely to improve steadiness and accuracy of drilling.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for collecting dust and shavings produced by a drum and disc lathe. The apparatus comprises a sealed housing which is adapted to enclose the entire grinding or cutting area of the lathe and trap airborne particles suspended therein. A brake drum or disc is attached to the lathe arbor within the housing through a housing access door prior to the machining operation. The cutting tool extends from the lathe into the housing through an orifice which is covered by a plurality of sealing strips. As the drum or disc is machined, the suspended asbestos and metal dust is removed from the housing to a collection receptacle by the directional air flow from a fan and the heavier metal shavings are collected in a tray located on the housing floor.

Abstract: The depth control assembly for attachment at one end to a machine tool and at the other end to a drill plate of a jig having selected guide holes positioned over points to be drilled in a production part. The depth control assembly is a spring-loaded adaptor which spaces the drill a constant distance from the production part, regardless of differences in distance between the face of the drill plate and the production part. Through the use of the depth control assembly, an operator can drill holes of a constant depth in the production part without taking separate measurements and making new depth adjustments at each hole location.

  • Patent number: 4388028
Abstract: A splash guard for use in combination with a rotary oil hole type of cutting tool. The guard comprises an inducer ring rotatably mounted upon the rotary tool or the tool spindle, and having a shielding sleeve axially slideable over the inducer. Liquid coolant is flowed through the inducer to the tool spindle and subsequently to the tool cutting edge where it is ejected at relatively high pressures. The presence of the shielding sleeve surrounding the tool prevents that coolant from splashing the operator and the operator work station. The sleeve is spring biased into contact with a workpiece, but is free to move axially on the inducer as the tool cuts into the workpiece.

Abstract: An easily removable safety guard for application to the barrel of a vertical drilling machine so as to overlie the drill bit comprises a coaxially arranged telescopingly connected, guard body and guard sleeve. The guard body is yieldably and resiliently retained in a mounting ring which is in turn clamped on the barrel of the drilling machine. The guard sleeve, or skirt, depends from the guard body to engage at its underside the workpiece or machine bed plate. The guard body moves progressively downwardly relative to the sleeve during progressive downward motion of the barrel. The sleeve is provided with clear-view panels therein and the guard body includes breaker bars to break off slivers of metal cut from the workpiece. Spring pressed ball catches enable the guard body with its sleeve, to be readily removed from the mounting ring with a downward extraction force.

Abstract: A scissored sea-floor well template for positioning spacing of subsea wells or piling in the sea floor. Two arms, each having a pontoon template at each end thereof, are pivotally connected. The two arms are rotated about the pivot to a closed position for transportation to the marine site at which they are to be used. Inasmuch as the template is provided with pontoons, it can be towed and does not have to be loaded on a barge although it could be. Upon reaching the well site the arms are opened so that the pontoon templates assume the desired shape. The arms are then locked in this extended position and the scissor well template is then lowered to the ocean floor.
