Including Rotating Cutter Other Than Rotating, Axially Moving Tool Patents (Class 408/26)
  • Patent number: 11110525
Abstract: Provided is cutting tool. The tool, in certain examples, includes a drill body that defines a drill axis, and a tool window formed in the drill body. The tool also includes a drill bit extending from the drill body, and a material reworking attachment (“MRA”) coupled to the drill body and storable within the tool window. The MRA is extendable from a stored position into either a surface-finishing position or a material-removal position. The MRA includes a first chamfering blade, a second chamfering blade, and a finishing surface interposed between the chamfering blades. The tool also includes a position manager to detect a position of the cutting tool with reference to a workpiece, and an actuator to transition the MRA from the stored position to the material-removal position, followed by a transition to the surface-finishing position, and followed by a transition to material-removal position.

  • Patent number: 9089905
Abstract: A tool that facilitates deburring interfaces in any stack orientation when access is limited to one side of the structure. The deburring blade has the capability to enter drilled holes and remove metallic burrs from mixed material interfaces regardless of stack orientation, i.e., metallic entrance or exit burrs within the stack. The blade design incorporates a slotted feature that hinges on a steel pin. The slot orientation is parallel to the metallic interface of the stackup. The resultant forces of metal material removal are reacted by the walls of the slot, allowing removal of metal material on either the front or back side of the blade tip.

Abstract: A tool for cutting an access hole in plasterboard which is mounted to a wall stud. The tool includes a housing portion, a plug or connector portion and a cutting element such as a screw which has a head and a threaded shank. The housing portion has an exit opening, an interior cavity which forms a seat for the head of the cutting portion and a bore which extends from the exit opening to the cavity. The shank of the screw extends freely through the bore and beyond the exit opening. The plug or connector portion of the tool is threaded into the housing and engages the head of the screw for fixing the screw relative to the housing and includes a shank for insertion into the jaw or chuck of a rotary drive mechanism for rotating the cutting element about its central longitudinal axis.

  • Patent number: 5186584
Abstract: A twist drill has a cutting member at the bottom, a shaft at the top, and a reduced-diameter root clearance region between the cutting member and the shaft. Cutting edges are provided at the transition between the cutting member and the root clearance region, and further cutting edges are provided at the transition between the shaft and the root clearance region. After a throughhole has been drilled using the cutting member, the drill is displaced laterally and moved along a circular path while it is still rotating. As a result, the cutting edges at the transition between the cutting member and the root clearance region countersink the bottom end of the throughhole. A similar procedure is employed to countersink the top end of the throughhole using the further cutting edges at the transition between the shaft and the root clearance region.

Abstract: Disclosed is a bit which can be cut both axially and laterally, and which is especially useful to cut an access opening in a sheetrock panel covering an electrical outlet box. The bit self-guides itself laterally around the periphery of the outlet box so that the opening will correspond to the shape of the box. The configuration of the bit permits it to be made in an unusually small diameter so as to minimize the width of the slot it cuts.

  • Patent number: 5119855
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting and drilling stock wherein the cutting and drilling operations are performed simultaneously at a single station. A table having a planar surface is used for supporting the stock. A saw is disposed above the surface of the table, and a pair of drills, each having two drill bits, are disposed below the surface of the table. The saw is pivotally coupled to the table so that the saw may be moved toward the planar surface for cutting the stock. As the saw descends toward the table, a clamping mechanism is activated for fixing the stock in place on the table as it is being cut. As the stock is being cut, the drill bits extend through corresponding apertures in the planar surface for drilling the underside of the stock. After the stock is drilled, the drill bits retract and the clamping mechanism releases its grip on the stock.

Abstract: A process is described, with the aid of which panel-type workpieces to be manufactured from a panel blank may also be provided with flat face and/or end face bores in the course of their manufacture. For this purpose, the panel blank is displaced transversely to the cutting plane into a stop position, the flat face bores pertaining to one of the workpieces to be manufactured are subsequently made in the one flat side of the panel blank. To make the further flat face bores for the workpiece, the panel blank is then transported further in a clocked manner through predetermined paths in the same direction and bored after each advance. Upon completion of all of the flat face bores, the panel blank is displaced in a clocked manner in the opposite direction into predetermined positions, fixed after each advance, and lastly severed. For the end face boring, the panel blank is displaced in the direction of advance through a path corresponding to a side length of a workpiece and subsequently clamped and severed.

Abstract: A work piece is mortised to receive an insert, and drilled for fastenings securing the insert in position, in a single cycle of operation facilitated by mounting the drill in an axial hole in the routing cutter. The drill is guided by the radially inner surfaces of the specially hard cutter inserts. A mechanism advances and retracts the drill with respect to the cutter, with the extension of the drill beyond the cutter taking place only when the cutter is not moving laterally in forming the mortise. The mortised depth is accurately controlled by an adjustable stop traversed by the drill, and forming an abutment limiting the insertion of the router bit into the holding collet. In addition to the plunge and horizontal movements involved in the formation of the mortise, a vertical movement to form mortise side-openings is provided by pivoting downward the frame carrying the entire movement system.
