Turret Of Tools Patents (Class 408/35)
  • Patent number: 4785513
Abstract: A compound turret for machine tools such as latches or the like having rotating and non-rotating tooling turrets mounted on a single housing. The compound turret includes a primary drive and a secondary drive. The primary drive includes a compound turret indexing unit operable to index the rotating and non-rotating tooling turrets into the turret operating and turret storage positions. The compound turret indexing unit consists of a harmonic drive that enables the operator to incrementally vary the turret operating position. The harmonic drive achieves high reduction ratios in a single stage thus eliminating the cumbersome gear systems usually implemented to achieve the reduction ratios required. The primary drive further includes a non-rotating tool indexing unit. The non-rotating tool indexing unit is operable to index the non-rotating tooling. The non-rotating tool indexing unit consists of a harmonic drive unit similar to the compound turret indexing unit.

Abstract: A robotic positioning device has a support structure and a tool implement holding member which is positional within the three dimensional space of the support structure. The tool implement holding member is connected to the support structure utilizing five positioning members. Each of these positioning members is connected to the tool implement holding member. Three of the positioning members are connected to the holding member at a first common center of rotation and the other two positioning members are connected to the holding member at a second common center of rotation. Each of the positioning members is attached to the support structure utilizing a connecting member which allows for the positioning member to freely pivot with respect to the support structure and additionally allows the member to move with respect to the support structure axially along an axis of the member. This is accomplished by moving the members axially toward or away from the support structure.

  • Patent number: 4741078
Abstract: A multi-function industrial robot employs an servo motor to select one tool for use from among a plurality of tools mounted on a turret, the base of which is fixed to an end of a vertical spindle and supports a turret shaft that lies at an angle of 45.degree. with respect to the spindle. The turret head on which the tools are mounted is fixed to one end of the turret shaft and it and the tools are configured so that one active tool will be coaxial with the spindle, and a bevel gear mounted at the end of the turret shaft opposite the turret head engages a bevel gear mounted on the robot frame. The spindle can be raised and lowered such that at its uppermost position the two bevel gears engage, and a mechanism that normally prevents rotation of the turret shaft is released so that as the spindle turns the turret-mounted bevel gear revolves about the stationary bevel gear and drives the turret shaft and the turret head for rotation.

  • Patent number: 4738170
Abstract: A machine tool in which processing can be performed on the workpiece from two directions and in which various types of machining processes other than turning can be performed on the workpiece by means of a turret on which a plurality of tools are mounted. The turret is freely indexible on a tool rest which is mounted on a horizontal guide for horizontal positioning. The horizontal guide is mounted for vertical positioning on a vertical column which is in turn mounted on a horizontal slide member the axis of which is perpendicular to the horizontal guide section supporting the tool rest. A workpiece holder is mounted for free rotation on the frame of the machine tool. The turret may thus be positioned and indexed so as to select one of a variety of processing tools such as a cutting tool, a drill, a milling cutter, or the like, and to perform the processing in either a horizontal or vertical direction.

  • Patent number: 4730525
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a cutting tool having a cutting tool insert which is automatically rotationally indexable. The cutting tool includes a shank and an indexable cutting tool insert rotatably connected to the shank. The insert includes a plurality of cutting edges and side surfaces therebetween. The cutting tool is also provided with an indexing device, lock pin, cam plate and eccentric cam pin. The indexing device comprises a sliding key and a pair of spring metal legs attached thereto for engaging a serrated portion of the lock pin to which the cutting tool insert is attached. The indexing device is effective for indexing the insert on the lock pin upon rotation of the cam pin which effects a lateral movement of the cam plate along the longitudinal axis of the shank whereby the cam plate engages the sliding key causing it to also move laterally to engage the indexing legs on the lock pin resulting in rotation of the lock pin and the cutting insert attached thereto.

Abstract: A machine tool for sequentially machining workpieces with different tools which may be clamped in a spindle of the machine tool, comprising a magazine in which the tools are disposed in a ring pattern and held in holders such that the holder of the tool to be clamped in or unclamped and removed from the spindle is in alignment with the spindle axis during the tool change, is characterized in that the holders of the magazine are distributed about the spindle axis, that each holder is provided with its own drive which moves it into a position where it is aligned with the spindle axis (clamping position) and into a position outside the spindle axis (magazine position) and that the holder remains aligned with the spindle axis while the tool held therein performs a machining operation. This permits a very quick tool change.

Abstract: In an indexing system for a member such as a turret head of a lathe, in which the member after undergoing an indexing movement is locked by a locking bolt thrust by spring force into a bolt hole in a plate coaxially fixed to the member, a hydraulic cylinder is used to exert a great force for holding the locking bolt positively and unmovably in each bolt hole against any reactive counter force from the side of the member due to a great load. The hydraulic cylinder is controllably actuated by a single hydraulic system containing also a hydraulic motor for driving the member in its indexing movement and a solenoid valve.

  • Patent number: 4542576
Abstract: A fastening apparatus which includes a supporting column with a working station installed on one side at the lower end thereof. Upper and lower annular rails are supported on and coaxially surround the upper portion of the column with a portion of the annular rails being vertically movable. Plural multi-spindle fastening heads are supported on the rails and movable circularly there around. An indexing device is mounted on the upper portion of the column for selectively engaging in moving a desired one of the heads to a position above the working station where the vertically movable portion of the annular rails is provided. A connecting head supported by the upper portion of the column is engageable with the fastening head that is positioned over the working station for supplying power thereto from a separate power source. The movable portion of the annular rails raises and lowers the selected fastening head to perform the fastening operations on the work piece at the working station.

Abstract: An automatic rotational cutting edge changer for use with a tool tip having a plurality of cutting edges. When a sensor detects wear or chipping in the cutting edge in use, the cutting edge changer moves this cutting edge of the tool tip out of the cutting position of the cutting tip and brings a new cutting edge of the same tool tip to the cutting position by keeping the tool tip supported in position on a rotating member and causing the rotating member to be urged in its rotating direction by a lever operated by an actuating device for the cutting edge changer.

Abstract: A vertical spindle numerically controlled machining center includes a stationary bed or base on which a workpiece holding table is slidably mounted for movement along a first axis. A vertically extending upright or column, having a vertically reciprocal spindlehead slidably mounted thereon, is slidably mounted on the bed for movement along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis so that the spindlehead overlies a portion of the table.
