Abstract: A machine tool equipped with a magazine and a guide drum which is disposed alongside the magazine. A tracer is mounted on the guide drum and is movable in a three coordinate system and the magazine contains tools which are also movable in a three coordinate system and in a direct ratio to the movement of the tracer. The tracer, which is attached to the guide drum, follows the profile or contour of a master or pattern and the compound motion is transmitted to the magazine containing the tools. Therefore, the tools are moved in the same way as the tracer so that the master or pattern is thus reproduced.
Abstract: This invention comprises a control for moving a headstock longitudinally on a radial arm of a radial drilling machine and for moving the radial arm angularly about the axis of rotation, by moving the headstock a predetermined distance along an X--X axis and also moving said headstock a predetermined distance along a Y--Y axis at right angles to the X--X axis, for bringing the axis of the drill spindle on the headstock from one drilling position to another drilling position. One Servo motor moves the headstock on the X--X axis and another motor moves it on the Y--Y axis. The motors may be programmed to move said headstock automatically. When the headstock is moved on the radial arm along the Y--Y axis, angular movement of the radial arm is accompanied by movement of the headstock longitudinally of the radial arm. Thus, the movement of the headstock along X--X and Y--Y axes, also moves the radial arm angularly.
Abstract: Apparatus for positioning a machine tool in relation to a workpiece comprises a support for the tool actuated by a fluid ram, with a control member carried by the support on a parallelogram linkage and arranged to operate a servo-valve associated with the ram. The controller is actuated at selected positions by a selected one of a number of pre-selector members adjustably located on a reference member which also engages the work. Each pre-selector member has an extendable roller controlled by a small fluid ram and when the roller runs off the end of the control member the ram stops and the machine tool is then in position.
Abstract: A metal foil, of a metal such as aluminum, is held in place over the drilling entry surface of a circuit board to be drilled. The drill thus first enters the foil which acts as a shield which takes burrs, pressure foot marks and particle marks which would otherwise be imparted to the surface of the circuit board. Further, the foil provides an even surface for the drill entry which tends to minimize drill wander and resultant hole mis-alignment which could occur if initial entry were to be made at the circuit board surface which is often uneven. After drilling has been completed, the foil is removed.
Abstract: An automatic tool changing apparatus incorporated in a drilling machine or the like comprises a plurality of collets, each for supporting and selectively grasping a tool holder mechanism. Each of the collets is slotted in its upper and central portions to divide the collet into a plurality of arcuate sections. The central portion of each collet is of generally truncated cone-shaped configuration, and rests in a generally truncated cone-shaped bore in a collet support block. A pneumatic piston arrangement is connected to the collets for selectively pulling the collets downwardly in their respective collet support blocks to move the generally arcuate sections of each collet radially inwardly to grasp a tool holder mechanism. Spring return means are provided for moving the collets into their normal positions wherein they will support, but will not grasp the tool holder mechanisms.
Abstract: An educational device for teaching the principles of numerical control includes a machine tool having three-axis movement with a predetermined fixed rate of movement along each axis. A control tape is driven at a predetermined fixed rate which is faster than the machine rate and contains seven control channels, two for each machine axis and an "off" channel for stopping all movements along each of the three axes. Numerical control programming is effected by punching holes in the relevant tape channels to initiate movements along the axes and terminating such movements by punching holes in the "off" channel. The distances between movement-initiating holes and "off" holes controls machine movement along the axes.
Abstract: An improved portable bracket assembly capable of being attached to a milling machine to thereby allow a plurality of sequentially located tool holders to be selected and inserted into the spindle of the milling machine. A special camming device containing a plurality of settable cams, one for each tool holder, and synchronized with the movement of said tool holders, controls selected switches. The presettable cams allow the first switch to continuously engage the indexing means driving the tool holders should a tool holder not contain a cutting tool. The resettable cams also control a second switch mechanism for creating a specific tool speed control signal for the specific tool in each tool holder.
Abstract: A copying tracer for tracing templates which have hollows or recesses or bores, particularly for stamping or nibbling machines, comprises a housing with a bore therein with a copying tracer plunger portion slidable in the bore which has a lower end which engages the template. The tracer plunger is biased by biasing means which act to provide a uniform downward biasing pressure on the plunger to engage the lower template engaging end portion of the tracer with the template and which is increased when the template begins to move downwardly, such as when it enters a recess or a groove, so that the movement becomes very rapid. The biasing may be accomplished by a spring system which includes one coil spring acting axially along the axis of the plunger tracer and an additional spring which is locked when the tracer engages the surface of the template but which moves transversely and acts against the plunger in a downward component of force after the tracer is initially moved downwardly.
