Abstract: The drilling apparatus of the present invention includes a platform and at least two independently adjustable members. The independently adjustable members position the platform relative to the structure such that the drilling tool is maintained in a predefined positional relationship to the surface of the structure. A portion of each of the independently adjustable members is in operable contact with the complexly curved surface at a respective contact point, and the independently adjustable members are capable of being extended by different lengths to the respective contact point in order to accommodate for the complexly curved surface. The method of the present invention includes determining the extension length required to position the drilling tool in the predefined positional relationship for each independently adjustable member based upon the radius of curvature at each member's contact point with the surface, and the predetermined distance between the drilling tool and each member.

  • Patent number: 6588991
Abstract: A method for repairing worn brake assembly holes on a highway trailer axle assembly including a cam shaft hole, and first and second anchor pin holes and including an axle stub extending from an end thereof, comprising the steps of aligning a boring tool, having a tool axis, with each brake assembly hole axis by aligning the tool axis parallel with the stub axis; positioning the tool axis at a distance from the stub axis equal to the distance of the brake assembly hole axis from the stub axis; and positioning the tool axis at an angular position relative to the brake assembly hole axis that is equal to the angular position of the brake assembly hole axis relative to the axis of another of the brake assembly holes. The aligned boring tool is then driven to bore an oversize hole through the worn brake assembly hole such that the worn brake assembly hole, including any worn extremities thereof, is consumed by the oversize hole, leaving a substantially cylindrical oversize hole.

  • Patent number: 6203252
Abstract: A tool is provided for reaming a new bore in the transfer case. The tool has a mounting plate that attaches to the transfer case. A support shoulder projects down from the bottom of the mounting plate. A threaded sleeve is attached to the support shoulder. The threaded sleeve guides a threaded rod with a hex head at one end and a cutting bit at the other end. Once the mounting plate is attached to the transfer case, the cutting bit is aligned with the bore to be reamed in the transfer case. A mechanic can then attach a hex wrench to the hex head at one end of the threaded rod. The mechanic turns the wrench which causes the cutting bit to turn, reaming out a bore in the transfer case. A bushing installer is inserted into the newly reamed bore. Attaching wrenches to both ends of the bushing installer, the mechanic turns the wrenches until the bushing is completely installed in the newly reamed bore.
