Patent number: 4601618Abstract: Methods and apparatus for locating and drilling pilot holes. Known systems are time-consuming and difficult to carry out and do not reliably result in straight and accurate pilot holes. The invention provides easy and accurate location and drilling and accurate alignment with an initial hole on an inaccessible surface. Clamp jaws (22, 50) are spring loaded into a closed position. Pliers (82) engage jaw (50) and head (64) of a shaft (60) extending through jaw (50) and attached to jaw (22). Pliers (82) are squeezed to move jaw (50) along shaft (60) away from jaw (22). Clamp (22, 50) is placed around a workpiece (10, 8, 15) with a pilot (38) carried by jaw (22) engaging a back surface pilot hole (16). Pliers (82) are released to allow spring (66) on shaft (60) to clamp jaws (22, 50) around workpiece (10, 8, 15). Drill bit (90) is introduced into a bushing (54) in jaw (50).Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1985Date of Patent: July 22, 1986Assignee: The Boeing CompanyInventor: Paul A. McEldowney

Patent number: 4544307Abstract: In its preferred embodiment this jig is a rigid foam plastic casting specific to a particular type of workpiece. It enables accurate fastening of workpiece to external structure with flathead screws. Each such workpiece has a plurality of countersunk orifices of identical size and distribution pattern. Jig and workpiece are of general rectangular plan, the jig thick enough to allow for integral functional guide holes. Jig is fitted to workpiece and the associated two held against an external structure while pilot holes are drilled into the structure through the jig guide holes centered with respect to the workpiece orifices. Proper orientation of jig to workpiece is obtained and maintained by a plurality of truncated conical protuberances on the jig extending from one of its two major parallel surfaces. These protuberances are complementary in shape and distribution pattern to the countersunk orifices of the workpiece.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1983Date of Patent: October 1, 1985Inventor: Aaron B. Patent number: 4387284Abstract: A device adapted for use with electrical discharge machining apparatus generates tapped holes in a workpiece using a threaded, hollow carbon tool. The tool is releasably connected to a reversible hydraulic motor by a coupling which feeds dielectric fluid through the interior of the tool into the space between the machining tip of the tool and the workpiece. The motor is mounted on a vertically reciprocable slide arrangement carried by a support which is mounted on the head of the conventional electrical discharge machine. The tool extends downwardly through a threaded guide which is held in spaced relationship to the workpiece by the support, thereby allowing fluid emanating from the tip of the tool to carry machined fragments upwardly out of the tapped hole. The slide includes a slide plate mounted on a pair of upright guide posts carried by the support.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1980Date of Patent: June 7, 1983Assignees: Leo P. Nicholas, Robert J.
