Means To Trim Edge Patents (Class 409/138)
  • Patent number: 5848930
Abstract: Provided is an aircraft trimming device including a guide assembly (24) and a cutting tool (26). The guide assembly (24) includes a rigid plate (25) and a T-shaped track (30) mounted to one side of the plate to serve as a support and a guide for the cutting tool (26). The cutting tool (26) includes a base assembly (32); an air supply assembly (34) that is supported on the base assembly (32); and a cutting assembly (36) in pneumatic communication with the air supply assembly (34). During operation, the cutting tool (26) is pneumatically lifted by the air supply assembly (34) a slight distance off the track (30) in order that a mechanic may translate the cutting tool (26) along the track (30), thereby trimming an aircraft sub-assembly edge along a predetermined path (40).

Abstract: In an edge gluing machine, a milling device (6) with a rotating milling tool (9) is provided for shaping the corners (7,8) of the projecting edge bands (14), its pivoting device (11) being arranged on a vertically adjustable housing (15). During the adjustment of the bridge (2) to the respective thickness of workpiece (3), the housing (15) is adjusted vertically by a displacing member (18) and by means of a limit switch (28,29) such that the pivot axis (11') of pivoting device (11) is located in the center of workpiece (3). A linear path control activatable by a light barrier causes the milling tool (9) to be positioned at half the thickness of the workpiece from the leading or trailing narrow surface of workpiece (3). The position of the pivot axis (11') is thereby determined such that a perfect machining of the corners (7,8) is ensured.

Abstract: A portable, rotary power tool includes a guide roller and a special designed cutter mounted to the spindle of the tool. The rotary tool is presented to a lens blank mounted to a lens defining pattern. The guide roller engages and follows the shape defining lens pattern while the special designed cutter contacts and removes material from the lens blank being contoured. The cutter may be square and include a further shape defining cutting surface thereon for providing a bevel to the lens edge. In a further embodiment, a rotary power tool similar to the above device, including the guide roller and cutter, is mounted to a support fixture. The fixture includes a pivoting arm assembly to which a lens blank and lens defining pattern are mounted. The pivot arm assembly is rotatable toward and away from the cutter carried by the rotary tool such that the cutter engages and removes material from the lens blank dependant upon the shape defined by the lens pattern.

The compliant end effector includes a mount secured to the robotic arm, an adjustment assembly pivotally attached to the mount, a guide that engages the plastic sheet near the area to be cut and trimmed, a tool for cutting and trimming the flexible sheet, and a pneumatic cylinder that biases the guide into engagement with the flexible sheet and presses the sheet against a rigid surface. The pneumatic cylinder moves the guide and tool through a range of positions as the robotic arm moves along a single path of travel down the length of the flexible sheet. The guide remains in contact with the flexible sheet despite warping or other imperfections in the stabilizing surface. The tool is fixed a predetermined distance from the guide to ensure that the plastic sheet is cut and trimmed within specific tolerances.

  • Patent number: 4985982
Abstract: This invention relates to a process and an apparatus for cutting and trimming printed circuit board workpieces, particularly printed multilayer circuit board workpieces, which are cut to an exactly predetermined, selectable size at high speed in an operation in which the workpieces are subjected only to relatively low stresses. The workpieces are cut and trimmed and are profiled at each of their edges in a single operation. This is accomplished by means of two circular sawblades, which extend in a common plane and have interdigitating sawteeth, which preferably have diamond cutting edges. The interdigitating sawteeth of the two sawblades cut into the workpiece from opposite broadsides and the sawteeth of each of the sawblades penetrate into the workpiece only in part of its thickness.

Abstract: A flash removing method is provided for cutting off with a reamer which is freely movable while in contact with a polymeric molded product within a predetermined range of pressing forces. The reamer is provided with blades having normal clearance angles of substantially zero degrees and the flanks of the blades follow the flash-forming region. The reamer is controlled in radial position according to the shape of the polymeric molded product, so that the reamer always receives a constant radial load from the product to leave even traces after the flash removal. A solidified gate is cut off before the flash removal. A flash removing apparatus for performing the method is also disclosed.

Abstract: A device for on-line deburring of metal strip advancing continuously along a defined path, including a rotary knife having an inwardly facing cutting edge, and structure supporting the knife for rotation such that the cutting edge engages and shaves burr from a strip edge at a location beyond the axis of knife rotation, in the direction of strip advance. In a deburring method using such a knife, the knife is rotated by its engagement with the strip edge, in such direction as to throw the shaved burr laterally outwardly away from the strip.

Abstract: An apparatus for chamfering the outer edges of stacked printed circuit boards comprises a detecting device for detecting the boundary between two adjacent boards, and a chamfering tool positionable adjacent to the opposed outer edges of respective ones of the two adjacent boards in response to detection of the boundary and movable along the board outer edges to simultaneously chamfer both outer edges. The chamfering tool successively chamfers pairs of opposed outer edges in the upward direction on one side of the stack, and then the stack is turned so that the chamfering tool chamfers the outer edges on a different side of the stack printed circuit boards.

Abstract: A method of chamfering the outer peripheral edges of plate members comprises stacking the plate members in face-to-face vertically aligned relation so that for each two adjacent plate members the upper outer peripheral edge of the lower plate member opposes the lower outer peripheral edge of the upper plate member, detecting the boundary between two adjacent plate members in the stack, positioning a rotary chamfering tool in response to detection of the boundary, and moving the rotary chamfering tool relative to the outer peripheral edges of the two adjacent plate members to simultaneously chamfer the upper edge of the lower plate member and the lower edge of the upper plate member. The detecting, positioning and chamfering steps are repeated for each two adjacent plate members in the stack to thereby chamfer both the upper and lower edges of the stacked plate members.

  • Patent number: 4915552
Abstract: A portable gas operated rotary tool is provided for milling a surface on the end of a cylindrical workpiece. The tool has a motor powered by a pressurized gas, such as compressed air. The motor directly drives a rotary milling head which is axially aligned with the axis of rotation of the motor. The motor has a stator chamber which houses a rotor having radial slots. Vanes are journaled within said slots for radial movement within the slot and define progressively expanding cavities. The milling head has a central bore for mounting on an arbor of the motor. The milling head includes blades for milling a frustoconical surface on the workpiece and a non-locking pilot tube to align the tool with the longitudinal axis of the workpiece. A novel air motor design is also disclosed that provides very high rotary speeds using standard air system pressure, very high horsepower, a low polar moment of inertia and a low torque.

  • Patent number: 4860500
Abstract: Precision control over the cutting force during robotic deburring and edge contouring is obtained by use of a "zero spring rate" driver. The driver consists of an air cylinder with a low friction piston. An accumulator is used in between an air supply line and the air cylinder such that the air pressure against the piston is constant. The driver is used to position or move a moving portion of an ultralow friction ball slide relative to a fixed portion of the ball slide. The arrangement avoids inaccuracies in a metal removal process which might otherwise be caused by robot path errors, part setup errors, and robot stepwise motion effects.
