Abstract: A method for producing a consumable electrode for remelting and an end face cutter for use in the method in which an ingot made in a consumable electrode arc remelting process is used as a material for the consumable electrode, are characterized in that said ingot can be set so that its centerline axis in a longitudinal direction lies horizontally and an end face of said ingot is machined by milling to be flat, the end face being connected with a stub, the stub holding the consumable electrode. In melting the consumable electrode, the present invention makes it easier to machine the bottom face of ingot that is to be mounted onto the stub or to perform conditioning such as cleaning the surface, which results in cutting man-hours and processing steps required for those operations and improving a product yield, thus enabling it to be widely used as a method for producing an ingot by the VAR process and contributing to the development of the relevant technology.

Abstract: A deburrer machine for cutting burrs (2), which consists out of a rotating deburring body (3) and travelling carriage (6) is foreseen for application especially on longitudinally cut slabs in flow. For deburring the deburring pistons (4) perform a rotary movement around the deburring body axis (21), whereby they approach to the cutting burr (2) from the workpiece side. Therefore the rotation axis is arranged in a way that the deburring pistons (4) turn below the lower workpiece surface outside the workpiece (1) after having finished the deburring procedure in order to lift again against this lower surface. Inside the deburring body (3) is placed a pressure chamber (18) which effects the lifting of the deburring pistons (4). Thereby the air contained in the lower piston guidance (12) is displaced and then the throttled air is led-off via bores in the lower part of the deburring piston (4) in order to dampen the piston movement.

Abstract: A portable, hand-held machine for stripping hard surfaces such as fibreglass boat hulls which have suffered osmotic deterioration. The machine has a hose fed hydraulic motor for outdoor work and a cutter block fitted with rows of tungsten carbide teeth which exert a planing action. Individually adjustable stops control the depth of cut. Trickle feed water arrests dust and prevents clogging. Stripping rates of about 12 m.sup.2 /hr are sustainable.

  • Patent number: 4862570
Abstract: An apparatus is provided for removing scale from a hot rolled steel strip by rolls acting by grinding and/or milling so that these rolls are uniformly effective in all regions of the steel strip and an appropriate uniform removal of the scale layer occurs. This is attained when driven grinding rolls adjustable toward the surfaces of the steel strip are provided of which at least two opposing rolls are axially slidable in opposite directions and have inversely oriented S-shape contours. These contours complement each other completely flawlessly in one definite position of the grinding rolls. In one such position the rolls provide a uniform engagement on both sides of a steel strip with a nearly rectangular profile.

  • Patent number: 4831854
Abstract: The rolling mill for mechanical descaling of hot rolled steel is constructed according to the slidable roll process with reducing rolls so that a unform operation with different and/or changing shape steel strips can obtained. This is attained when the rolling mill has at least two rolls slidable in opposite directions whose body surfaces are constructed with S-shape contours positioned inversely to each other so that these contours compliment each other flawlessly in one certain axial relative position. When sliding the rolls in opposite directions in one case the contour is decreased in the center region of the steel strip and when slid in the opposite directions in the other case the contour is increased in the center region. Thus the rolls can be adjusted to fit a gently convex steel strip profile by axially sliding the rolls in opposite directions as also rolled strips with a thickness centrally reduced in comparison to that of the edge regions can by appropriate sliding of the rolls opposite each other.

  • Patent number: 4679355
Abstract: An apparatus grinding a steel billet to remove surface cracks. The billet is advanced in the direction of it longitudinal axis while being rotated. The apparatus includes a grinding wheel mounted in a bearing in a movably mounted support member. In order to accurately and simply control the penetration depth of the grinding wheel, a stop member is mounted on the support member. In one embodiment, the stop member is a segment of a circle mounted eccentrically relative to the grinding wheel. In another embodiment, the stop member is a segment of a spiral mounted coaxially with the grinding wheel. The stop member engages the surface of the billet. Two arrangements are described for rotating the billet at an increased speed while grinding the edge regions.

  • Patent number: 4634322
Abstract: An assembly capable of use in removing material from both ends of an elongated workpiece, such as a bar incorporates two similar pieces of apparatus of a known kind. Each apparatus has a cutter mounted at one end of a flexible drive and rotatable by a motor about its own axis to effect removal of the material; the cutter is supported in a universal mounting enabling the cutter to swing in a closed path about the axis of the cutter. The cutter is biased inwards towards the axis. The invention provides positioning means for moving the cutters aside into loading positions so that a finished workpiece can be removed laterally and a new one introduced laterally. The positioning means on each apparatus includes means for shifting the motor towards the universal mounting so as to cause the flexible drive to bow more markedly and move the cutter further from the axis, and a deflector for engaging the cutter-end of the flexible drive and moving it to its loading position.

  • Patent number: 4633620
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for processing of steel billets or the like to remove surface defects. A material-removing device such as a grinding wheel is automatically controlled to initiate removal of material at points where defects have been detected and to continue removal of material as long as cracks or other defects continue to be detected. In certain disclosed embodiments, an inspection is performed using magnetic particle or other inspection equipment, the initial removal of material being controlled therefrom. Thereafter, material-removal is controlled from signals produced by a probe which is carried in the removal device or adjacent thereto. In other disclosed embodiments, a thin layer of material is removed to permit detection of defects by a probe, the material-removal being both initiated and continued under control of probe signals.

  • Patent number: 4457064
Abstract: Spent nuclear fuel elements of spherical shape are stripped of their outer graphite shell surrounding the graphite matrix in which fuel particles are embedded by being admitted one by one to a work space between a rotary milling disk and an axially shiftable, but non-rotary, reaction disk. The radially ribbed stepped surfaces of low-pitched helical configuration allow the spherical body to shift its position several times per revolution as it rolls around between the disks under pressure from a spring acting on the axially movable disk. A spacing collar prevents the two disks from approaching closer than a minimum spacing sufficient to prevent more than the outer graphite shell to be worn away. By operating the work space with two or more spheres therein at the same time, a damaged or out-of-round fuel element can be ground to a spherical shape if at least one of the spheres in the work space is truly spherical. Pairs of disks may be operated together in coaxial alignment to provide a high throughput rate.
