  • Patent number: 11833598
Abstract: Stabilized cutting tool assemblies. A cutting tool assembly for use with a reference surface includes a tool holder having a rotational axis. The tool holder is arranged for attachment to a drive source arranged to rotate the tool holder and move the tool holder relative to a reference surface. The cutting tool assembly includes a rotatable cutting tool coupled to the tool holder. The cutting tool includes a cutting surface and has a first portion and a second portion. The first portion is disposed adjacent the tool holder. The cutting tool assembly includes a stabilizer coupled to the cutting tool adjacent the second portion. The stabilizer has a bearing surface. The bearing surface is positioned on the second portion to abut the reference surface and to stabilize the cutting tool when the drive source moves the tool holder and the cutting tool to a position adjacent the reference surface.

  • Patent number: 6869259
Abstract: A milling method is provided for the manufacture of components composed of difficult-to-cut materials for turbomachines, aircraft and spacecraft by producing recesses with one or more side walls. An end milling cutter which cuts at the circumference and at the tip and has a tip contour which is rounded towards the circumference is used as the rotating milling tool. In addition to rotation about its axis, the milling tool performs an eccentric orbiting motion about an orbital axis spaced apart from its axis. The opposite senses of rotation lead to downcut milling, and the orbital axis performs a translational advance motion on a straight and/or curved path transversely to its longitudinal direction, with or without a swivelling motion.

  • Patent number: 6503032
Abstract: A keyway is cut in a shaft by means of a cutting unit moved along a guideway on a base that is clamped on the shaft. The cutting unit has a milling head that is slimmer than the desired keyway. The keyway is cut in more than one sweep and the transverse position of the cutting unit is adjusted between the sweeps. In this way, narrow and wide keyways can be cut with the same precision and with one and the same comparatively small machine.

  • Patent number: 6264405
Abstract: Method and device for drilling holes into a mantle of a cylinder of a paper machine, in particular a drying cylinder, while the cylinder is in its site of operation in the paper machine in which a drill carriage having drill bits is supported on the cylinder being drilled. The drill carriage is locked in a fixed position relative to the cylinder being drilled the drill bits are pressed into the mantle of the cylinder to be drilled and rotating to thereby drill holes in the cylinder mantle. The drill carriage is supported on the cylinder being drilled by a first set of wheels arranged on the drill carriage during drilling and is displaced upon rotation of a second set of wheels which contact the cylinder only for axial movement and not during drilling.

  • Patent number: 5185917
Abstract: A method of machining keyways in shafts comprises the steps of aligning a central line of a spindle of a machine tool with a center line of a shaft to be machined, preliminarily machining a keyway in the shaft with keyway mill arranged on the spindle so as to retain a symmetrical allowance for a finishing machining of the keyways so as to machine walls of the keyway, finishing machining of radiused parts of the keyway at its both ends with a cross-feed of the mill so that a width of radiused parts is greater than a desired width of the keyway, and final machining the keyway with a self-aligning cutting tool mounted on the spindle so that it freely turns and is rectilinearly moved along the keyway.

  • Patent number: 5056389
Abstract: A portable lathe for performing machining operations on a stationary member. The lathe is of split construction permitting the lathe to be mounted on the member from the side of the member. Each of the end housings have removable sections that provide a side entrance to the bores of the housings. Parallel guide ways connect the end housings and support a moveable carriage assembly. The carriage assembly rotatably supports a rotating tool holder and carrier on a unique roller arrangement simplifying construction. The carriage assembly has removable support struts and the carrier and tool holder ring are splitable which provides a side entrance to the bore of the carriage assembly. The lathe is secured and aligned to the member to be machined by adjustable jaws provided on the end housings. Twin leadscrews provide motion to the carriage assembly and reduce the twisting and deflection experienced with a single leadscrew.

  • Patent number: 4923342
Abstract: A tool for cutting a keyslot in a workpiece bore for use with a numerically-controlled (N.C.) machine of the type having a plurality of tools for performing a number of machining operations on a workpiece. The tool includes a spindle which is insertable in the driving mechanism of the N.C. machine and a shaft fixed to the spindle for driving a cutter wheel responsive to spindle rotation. The spindle is received in a housing which is automatically locked against rotation relative thereto when the tool is not in the driving mechanism of the N.C. machine. An adjustable ring permits changing the cutting plane of the cutter wheel to vary the angle at which the keyslot is cut in the workpiece bore.

  • Patent number: 4778316
Abstract: An improved portable milling machine adapted to grip a work piece and to cut a keyway through a clamping area. This is accomplished without releasing the grip of the milling machine on the work piece by forming an elongated slot in a bed plate with lands lying at opposite sides of the elongated slot. A clamp plate is arranged in stacked alignment with said lands and a work piece is gripped between the clamp plate and the lands of the bed plate. This structure permits a cutting element to pass through the elongated slot to cut a keyway upon the work piece while said work piece is gripped, the cutting action being performed through the clamped area. Improvements include interchangeable spindle construction allowing the use of a variety of cutter elements.

  • Patent number: 4778314
Abstract: A method of machining an axially parallel groove in the periphery of a shaft includes fixedly mounting the shaft in the main spindle of a CNC turning machine, moving a rotating milling tool (whose diameter decreases in a direction from its free end and whose maximum diameter is less than the desired width of the groove) radially and axially of the shaft so as to form a first portion of the groove and to finish one of the lateral surfaces which bound the groove, extracting the tool and changing the angular position of the shaft through an angle which equals or approximates the taper of the tool), and again moving the tool axially of the shaft to complete the machining of the groove and to simulaneously form the other lateral surface. The tool can be reground a substantial number of times so that its useful life is a multiple of that of cylindrical milling tools having a diameter which matches the desired width of the groove.
