  • Patent number: 8784021
Abstract: A jig device holding a work piece is used with a milling machine that cuts from the work piece a prosthesis having a surface essentially free of defects. The jig device is inserted repeatedly into the machine in the same predetermined location, even upon inverting the jig device. This maintains the spatial relationship between the jig device and milling so, at start up, they are always in the same exact spatial relationship. The milling machine partially cuts through a first side of the work piece to form in the work piece a cavity having a surface part corresponding to at least a portion of the prosthesis being made. The jig device is then removed from the machine, inverted and reinserted into the machine at the same predetermined location. A support material is placed in the cavity prior to reinserting the jig device. Upon reinserting the jig device, the machine precisely cuts through an opposed side of the work piece to form within the work piece a prosthesis having a surface essentially free of defects.

  • Patent number: 7137940

  • Publication number: 20010026742
Abstract: The system constructed according to the present invention operates by properly positioning a base compact disc (CD) onto a cutting table and then cutting the CD to a preprogrammed shape. Base CDs are stacked on an elevator system. The CDs include one side on which data is recorded, and another side on which the CD label is printed. A robotic arm with a vacuum gripper then picks-up a CD from the stack and moves the CD to a cutting table. While the arm moves the CD, a machine vision system takes a picture of the CD label and compares the picture to an image of the label stored in data. An image mapping program then determines the rotational orientation of the CD by comparing the picture and data image. Once the orientation of the disc is known, the robot arm rotates the disc a calculated amount so that it can then be placed on the cutting table in a proper normalized orientation.

  • Patent number: 4651404
Abstract: A machine tool having an indexable workpiece support and a tool holder which is moveable to enable the machine tool to operate on different parts of a workpiece while the latter is held stationary by the workpiece support, indexing of the workpiece support enabling a part thereof to be turned from a first position in which a workpiece can be mounted on that part, to a second position to present such a workpiece to the tool holder, whereby one workpiece can be loaded on one part of the workpiece support while another workpiece on another part of the workpiece support is being simultaneously machined by the machine tool.

  • Patent number: 4576213
Abstract: A table, movably carried upon a stationary base, is provided with a fixed jaw and a movable jaw for gripping the lateral edges of a door or similar panel-like workpiece. The table is movable in reciprocal directions against adjustably positionable stops to place a longitudinal edge of the door at predetermined locations relative the cutting path of a router. The router is mounted upon a carriage which is horizontally and vertically movably supported upon a frame upstanding from the base.

  • Patent number: 4565475
Abstract: A method and apparatus for milling drill points in screw blanks. Form relieved milling cutters are rotated at unusually high speeds to produce high performance screws at improved rates of production. The cutters can be adjusted in a simple manner to achieve variations in drill point geometry, and the speed of the cutters can be controlled to carefully maintain the quality of the products and maximize the life of the cutters.

  • Patent number: 4523360
Abstract: A table (1) revolving intermittently and carrying on its periphery piece-holder grips, has central openings (11), which make possible the discharge of working shavings and wastes at the center of the table itself (arrow 12) and not at the periphery (arrows 7, 7') as now is done. This makes possible direct discharge of the working shavings and wastes in the collection container underneath and avoids clogging and stopping of the machine for cleaning which requires the presence of additional labor and limits production. Nozzles (13, 13') direct fluid radially inwardly to assist in this central discharge of shavings and wastes.

  • Patent number: 4512380
Abstract: The invention relates to apparatus for the transverse and/or longitudinal machining of wooden workpieces, comprising a workpiece carriage for mounting a workpiece or a plurality of workpieces thereon and adapted to be displaced in the direction of the X-axis of a spatial X-Y-Z coordinate system along at least one transverse machining tool itself adapted to be displaced in the Y- and/or Z-axis for the machining operation. The object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the above indicated type, which is of simple construction and by means of which the transverse machining of a workpiece can be carried out in a single mounting position of the workpiece and at a single machine location. In order to attain this object, the invention provides that the workpiece carriage comprises a mounting table adapted to be tilted about an axis parallel to the X-axis.

  • Patent number: 4444534
Abstract: A machine tool apparatus having a bifurcated column structure comprising spaced apart columns which enclose and slidably secure the mounting end of an arm, the opposite end of which receives a rotating spindle adapted to engage and rotate a variety of machining tools. The bifurcated column structure has three primary ways having their guiding surfaces arranged generally in one plane, and the third having its guiding surface in a plane orthogonally related to the plane of the first ways. The column structure also includes three secondary ways positioned in opposed relation to the respective primary ways. Antifriction bearings are connected to the mounting end of the arm in opposed relation to the three primary and three secondary ways and serve to guide the arm for vertical movement within the column structure.

  • Patent number: 4422265
Abstract: A multi-station grinding machine has a worktable mounted on a machine bed to rotate about a principal axis. The worktable has a plurality of workpiece holding devices at equal angular intervals around the axis and uniformly spaced therefrom, each holding devices defining parallel to said principal axis a support axis for a workpiece to be held therein. A loading/unloading station and three work stations are positioned around the principal axes each work station including a grinding wheel. Table index device effects angular indexing of the table about said principal axis through a series of registered positions to bring the workpieces into precise register with the work stations in succession. Workpiece index device at each work station is selectively coupled to effect predetermined incremental indexing rotation of a workpiece to present preselected portions of the workpiece for engagement by the associated grinding wheel.

  • Patent number: 4292006
Abstract: A handle-cutting device comprises a conveyor in the form of a horizontal table arranged to be rotated step-by-step to bring handle holders in turn to a handle-cutting station where the handle is lightly clamped. While the holder is stationary at the handle-cutting station, a rapidly rotating cutter (for example, rotating at 3,000 r.p.m.) having a contoured blade representing the profile of the wall of a cup bowl to which the handle is to be attached is progressively advanced towards the holder to remove surplus clay in thin slices from the handle. The blade is unconfined along those parts of its length which effect the cutting, being mounted on spaced apart supporting portions of a carrier, so that the small pieces of clay sliced away by the blade can escape from the cutter. The device ensures a high degree of conformity of the attaching surface of the handle to its intended configuration.

  • Patent number: 4190390
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus for permitting automatic and manual machining of critical wear surfaces of railroad truck side frames. A fixture is rotatably mounted on a base. The railroad truck side frame is mounted on the fixture with the fixture and side frame in a first or vertical position. The side frame is first leveled vertically on the fixture with respect to leveling plates and then aligned horizontally before it is rigidly clamped to the fixture. Pivotably mounted gauges are then used to determine the exact location of the pedestal roof areas of the side frame with respect to the fixture, and this positional information from the gauges is manually transferred to adjustable stop dogs that engage limit switches that control the movement of a machining head. The fixture is then rotated 90.degree. and locked in that position.
