Abstract: A headstock is formed by a spindle head to which a tool can be attached, a support base, etc. The spindle head is rotated about a central axis (rotation axis) of a cylindrical rotary spindle and indexed to a predetermined attitude by a rotation drive mechanism built in the support base. The headstock includes a braking mechanism that restrains rotation of the rotary spindle by pressing a piston against a brake plate by using an oil pressure. When the braking mechanism is operated, hydraulic force is applied to a braking member of the rotary spindle in the opposite direction to the direction in which the piston is pressed against the brake plate, so that the braking member is pressed against a reference surface provided in the support base.

  • Patent number: 5201617
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting a machining tool on a robot arm is disclosed having first and second support members with the second support member attached to the first support member by torsion bar elements so as to be movable with respect to the first member about an axis in a single degree of freedom. The first support member is attached to the end of the robot arm and the machining tool is attached to the second support member. The torsion bar element interconnecting the first and second support members has end portions larger than a connecting portion extending between them. One end portion is fixedly attached to one of the support members and the other end portion is fixedly attached to the other support member. The torsion bar elements are generally cylindrical in configuration and are dimensioned such that the diameters of the end portions are between seven and ten times the diameter of the connecting portion.

  • Patent number: 5176479
Abstract: A portable electric router having a depth of cut adjustment mechanism including an adjustment ring which engages a screw thread on the motor housing and rotationally engages the router base. Rotational engagement of the ring with the base is effected by providing an annular groove on the base and a projection on the ring engaging the groove. The projection is formed with a plurality of pockets each having an opening communicating with the groove. Within each of the pockets is a ball which extends through the opening to contact a wall of the groove and thereby act as a ball bearing.

  • Patent number: 5112171
Abstract: Formed in a basic body (13) connected to a drive spindle is a supporting surface (15a) which is at right angles to the rotational axis (10a) of the basic body (13) and on which one end face (16a) of a rotatable setting disk (16) rests. The other end face (16b) of the setting disk (16) is inclined relative to the first mentioned end face (16a). Resting on the setting disk (16) is a cutter holder (17) in which a cutter (18) is held. The cutting edge (19) of this cutter (18) runs approximately in the radial direction. The inclination of the cutting edge (19) of the cutter relative to a plane disposed at right angles to the rotational axis (10a) can now be changed by turning the setting disk (16), as a result of which the desired quality of the circumference of the machined gravure cylinder can be achieved without the cutting edge (19) of the cutter needing to be ground very accurately.

  • Patent number: 5088865
Abstract: A portable electric router having a depth of cut adjustment mechanism including an adjustment ring which engages a screw thread on the motor housing and rotationally engages the router base. There is further provided an arrangement for preventing relative rotation between the motor housing and the base. The adjustment ring is formed as a split ring with projections adjacent opposite sides of the split, each with a frusto-conical camming surface. A circular clamp knob mounted for threaded rotation on a bolt passing through the projections radially with respect to the router motor housing bears against the camming surfaces so as to squeeze the ring in order to effect a clamping action as the knob is moved inwardly. In order to provide limit stops for preset depths of cut, a pair of stop rings are provided which are angularly rotatable on the router base.

  • Patent number: 5044844
Abstract: Machining apparatus comprises a boom rotatable about a pivot support within a cylindrical workpiece with a machining station, such as a milling cutter, mounted on the remote end of the boom. Two angularly spaced wheel units are provided on respective sides of the boom to support the boom on the workpiece. Each wheel unit has an actuator to raise or lower that side of the boom relative to the support surface. Variations in the level of the support surface are determined by sensors monitoring a reference such as a rigid template or a planar laser beam. Each actuator has a respective sensor for independently adjusting each wheel unit and each sensor may be on a radius from the pivot to the associated wheel unit.In an alternative embodiment, the boom is linearly displaceable along spaced rails and the machining station is displaceable perpendicularly to the linear direction along the boom.

  • Patent number: 4684300
Abstract: An attachment for a vertical mill having a quill and a spindle rotatably mounted within the quill which is adapted to rotatably drive one end of a milling cutter. The attachment includes an elongated housing having a semi-cylindrical cavity and in which one end of the housing is clampingly secured to the quill of the vertical mill. In doing so, the milling cutter is contained at least partially within the cylindrical cavity. A rotatable center is rotatably mounted to the other end of the housing and the center is positioned within a conical recess at the lower or free end of the milling cutter or, alternatively, a pilot on the cutter is rotatably received in the other end of the housing. The housing together with the center thus allows the cutter to freely rotate with the spindle while simultaneously supporting the cutter against lateral deflection with respect to its axis of rotation.
