Patent number: 6871859Abstract: A toolholder and insert arrangement includes an insert having a cutting portion and a shank portion disposed at a base of the cutting portion. The toolholder has a first end attachable to a spindle and a second end having a shank-receiving opening. When the toolholder is at ordinary room temperature, the shank-receiving opening is smaller than the shank portion. Upon heating of the toolholder to a predetermined temperature above the ordinary room temperature and above an ordinary operating temperature, the shank-receiving opening expands to become at least as large as the shank portion. Upon cooling of the toolholder to a temperature below the predetermined temperature and after insertion of the shank portion in the shank-receiving opening, the shank-receiving opening shrinks to generally conform to a shape of the shank portion.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2000Date of Patent: March 29, 2005Assignee: Sandvik AktiebolagInventors: Mikael Lundblad, Sven Engstrand

Publication number: 20040253070Abstract: A cutting tool has a shank with a cylindrical portion that is adapted to fit closely within a tool holder. The shank is adapted to be engaged by a setscrew of the tool holder at a first contact point. A clearance surface is provided opposite the first contact point. The clearance surface terminates adjacent two circumferentially spaced points that make contact with the tool holder upon tightening the setscrew. These contact points are circumferentially spaced from the first contact point angular distances greater than 90 degrees and less than 270 degrees.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 10, 2003Publication date: December 16, 2004Inventors: Glenn W. Publication number: 20040223817Abstract: A milling cutter includes a body having three cutting edges formed by the body. An end of the body situated opposite the cutting edges defines a fastening end of the milling cutter. Each cutting edge extends from an outer periphery of the body substantially to a center rotational axis of the body along a substantially convexly curved path. Radially outer and radially inner ends of each cutting edge are situated axially rearwardly of an axially foremost point of the cutting edge. Each cutting edge lies on a respective imaginary sphere having a radius which has a center which that is spaced from the cutting edge in a direction toward the fastening end and spaced radially from the center axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 4, 2004Publication date: November 11, 2004Applicant: SECO TOOLS AB.Inventors: Carl-Erik Berglow, Mattias Puide, Sven-Erik Persson, Kurt Nordlund

Patent number: 6811362Abstract: A method for reusing profile insert blades maintains axial, radial and profile dimensions of a cutting tool. The method includes duplicating an original profile on a used profile insert blade by sharpening a profile edge of the used profile insert blade to form a sharpened profile edge with a new profile that is shifted longitudinally along a length of the profile cutter blade relative to an original profile position. Material is removed from a reference edge of the sharpened profile insert blade to form a new reference edge, for positioning the resharpened blade in a longitudinally changed position so that the new adjusted profile has similar axial, radial and profile dimensions as compared to the original profile.Type: GrantFiled: September 11, 2001Date of Patent: November 2, 2004Assignee: E.
