  • Patent number: 7198441
Abstract: In the single-indexing method, the blades are positioned in a circle on a cutter head, so that all of the blades run through a tooth space to be produced during cutting of a bevel gear. The workpiece is then rotated by one pitch and the continuously rotating cutter head may then cut the next tooth space. Since the blades do not all have their intended shapes and positions, different structures arise on the tooth flanks, which lead to deviations in the pitch measurement. In order to avoid this, a face-milling method is suggested in which the cutter head gets the same angular position around its axis in relation to the tooth space to be produced as for the preceding space. This has the result that all tooth spaces are not more precise overall, but their surface structures are identical and the pitch measurement is thus not falsified.

  • Patent number: 7076875
Abstract: A method is provided for manufacturing a compound helically toothed planet gear for a planetary gear set wherein the individual gear elements of the compound planet gear have different leads. The method identifies and utilizes the several factors affecting gear timing for compound helical planet gears having different leads to provide planet gears capable of attaining equal load share among the several gears of the planetary gear set. Specifically, the method of the present invention utilizes a mounting shoulder and bore axis to provide common locating features for use throughout the manufacturing process The method further provides for bore honing and removal of equal amounts of material from both sides of each gear tooth in the gear finishing process so as not to alter gear timing between the compound gear elements.

  • Patent number: 6450740
Abstract: A mechanical gear hob is equipped with an automatic stock divide device that enables the hob to cut or re-cut gear parts that already have teeth in them by automatically synchronizing the gear teeth to the hob cutter. The hob is equipped with a hob shift position sensor and a hob cutter rotary position sensor to input to a controller the lateral and rotary positions of the hob cutter. A stock divide sensor is mounted adjacent the worktable to determine the location of the gear teeth previously formed in the workpiece. A servomotor is mounted to the differential input shaft in the hob drive train and has a rotary position feedback to the controller as well. Stock divide is accomplished by an input to the differential, causing the workpiece to rotate relative to the hob cutter to bring the existing teeth on the workpiece into phase with the teeth of the hob cutter.

  • Patent number: 5384950
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for machining a component using a CNC or an NC machine. The method includes the steps of mounting the component at a location on the machine and providing a pair of datum points, e.g., "locating holes" or dowels, on the component. A first base line is defined to extend through the datum points and a second base line is defined to intersect the first base line at an intersection. While retaining the component at its mounting location, such component is machined using dimensions measured from the base line intersection. The new method avoids the inaccuracies, e.g., tolerances and tolerance "buildup," that often results from the use of jigs, fixtures and the like. In other words, the component itself becomes the reference for machining. The method is particularly useful in making parts such as detachable, unevenly-wearing gear segments which can be turned end-for-end for greatly improved service life.

  • Patent number: 4486695
Abstract: The profile measurement control comprises a potentiometer adjustable by means of a lever. The voltage tapped-off the potentiometer is attenuated via a resistance network proportional to the radius of the base circle disc and additionally via an encoding switch and a voltage attenuating circuit when a certain pre-selected diagram length transmission or translation is exceeded. Thus a voltage is always supplied to the drive motor driving a generating carriage or slide which ensures for an optimum paper feed rate when the lever is located to engage a stop. Hence, the lever can be always adjusted to engage the stop without the preselected diagram length translation or the radius of the selected base circle disc having to be taken into account. Consequently, the measuring rate during series testing of gear profiles can be considerably increased.
