Including Tightener Or Tensioner Patents (Class 410/100)
  • Patent number: 7841815
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a vehicle cargo restraint system comprises a cargo restraining strap and at least two tie down rings proximate the perimeter of the cargo area, positioned approximately opposite each other. In trucks and trailers, additional tie down rings may be conveniently placed near the top of the vertical corners of the cargo bed. At least one of each pair of the tie down rings is configured to allow a cargo restraining strap to be passed through it and be attached to a mechanical tightener, e.g., a ratchet, which is located conveniently on a wall of the cargo area, at a distance from the pass-through, tie down ring. The mechanical tightener may be rotatably and removably attached to the wall of the cargo area. The cargo restraining strap, both of the tie down rings and the mechanical tightener, and their respective anchoring sites, must all be strong enough to restrain cargo under predetermined conditions of cargo weight, vehicle speed and type of accident.

Abstract: A multi-mode belt retractor including an interlocked attachment mechanism. The belt retractor and attachment mechanism are physically integrated in a single unit. In one embodiment, the retractor is shifted between modes by the operation by the attachment mechanism such that securing the attachment mechanism to an anchor point shifts the belt retractor into a locked mode. Releasing the attachment mechanism from the anchor point shifts the belt retractor into a free-wheel mode. In one embodiment, only a single user-operable button is provided, thus minimizing the opportunity for improper operation. One embodiment of the attachment mechanism is symmetrical, making it operable by a user's left or right hand.

Abstract: The tiedown system has a single tensile member with cargo attachments on each end thereof. The tensile member passes through a series of guides affixed about the perimeter of the carrier (flatbed truck or trailer, etc.). The ends of the tensile member are secured removably to the rear of the cargo, e.g., the cargo rack of an all terrain vehicle (ATV). The medial portion of the tensile member is connected to a winch on the front of the ATV or other cargo, or alternatively the medial portion of the tensile member is passed through an opening on the front of the cargo, e.g., the forward cargo rack of the ATV, and connected to a winch anchored to the cargo bed of the carrier. The winch is actuated to draw up the tensile member, simultaneously pulling the rear and front of the cargo securely against the cargo bed of the carrier.

Abstract: A harness assembly for restraining freight having a relatively high center of gravity comprises first and second junction rings, and four tensile members. Two of the four members form a bifurcated harness when connected to the junction rings. The third and fourth tensile members each have a ring end and an anchor end. The ring ends are connected to the junction rings. The bifurcated harness, having a top-contacting member and a side-contacting member, respectively contacts a top end and a side portion of positioned freight. The anchor ends anchor the third and fourth tensile members to a support structure such as a railcar floor. The third and fourth tensile members thereby diagonally direct tension into the bifurcated harness relative to the support structure so as to force the top end of the freight toward the support structure and the side portion of the freight toward the anchor ends.

Abstract: A tensioning device is configured to wind a threadable tensioning line, particularly a belt or a web, the proximal end of which is threaded through a first end of the device and attached to an opposite end of the device. A frame of the tensioning device can be fastened to a support surface. A ratcheting system included in the device winds the proximal end of the threadable tensioning line by means of a pivot handle. The threadable tensioning line is tightened when the handle is pivoted in a drive stroke. An embodiment of the tensioning device includes a ratcheting system that drives the tensioning device when the pivot handle is pulled toward the user in a drive stroke.

Abstract: A load securing device for stacked cargo comprises a body member having contact surfaces adapted to engage a side portion of a cargo item that is stacked on a pair of each of a pair of stacked cargo items. One end of a flexible member such as a strap is attached to the body member. The flexible member extends through a space created between the stacked items or the stacked items and a carrier surface, with its other end being secured to a carrier supporting the stacked items. Optimally, and when expecting forces to be applied to both sides of the stacked items, a load securing device is placed on either side of the stacked items so that forces arising during the transport of the stacked items are resisted in both directions.

Abstract: A winch for a cargo restraining strap includes a frame having a base and first and second parallel spaced sidewalls. The first and second sidewalls define respective first and second apertures. A protective wall extends from the base and is spaced from the first sidewall. The first sidewall and the protective wall cooperate to define a clevis structure including a channel. A pawl is movably secured to the frame, with an inner end thereof located in the clevis channel. A spool extends between the first and second sidewalls and is rotatably supported in the first and second apertures of the first and second sidewalls. A ratchet wheel is connected to the spool and is located adjacent the first sidewall. The ratchet wheel is selectively engaged by the pawl. The frame, spool and ratchet wheel can be defined from aluminum alloy. The frame can be extruded as a one-piece construction. The spool and ratchet wheel can be extruded as a one-piece construction.

Abstract: A lashing device includes a stretching device which is to be fastened between two fixing points that are to be secured to one another, the stretching device including stretching device parts which are each connectible to one of the fixing points. At least a first stretching device part has a stretching rod extending in the longitudinal direction of the stretching device and has a threaded portion. A second stretching device part supports a nut part which is to be screwed onto the thread of the first stretching device part. Between the first and the second stretching device part, a coupling part is arranged which, by snap action, allows mutual rotation of the two stretching device parts in at least a direction of rotation which corresponds to tightening of the stretching device and counteracts rotation in the opposite direction.

Abstract: A winch assembly is designed so that it can be slidably supported on the side rail of a vehicle. The winch assembly has side walls and a top plate. Slots are formed between the top plate and the side walls. A first bar runs between the side walls at substantially the same elevation as the top plate. A second bar runs between the side walls at an elevation below that of the first bar. A space is formed between the top plate and the first and second bars. The vehicle has a side rail running there around on which the winch assembly is supported. The side rail has a U-shaped bottom piece and a U-shaped top piece which run around the vehicle side walls. A cross member runs between the opposite sides of the cargo compartment The side frame has a U-shaped bottom piece with an arm extending there from, this arm being fitted into a slot in the deck of the vehicle located between the deck and the cross member.

An adjustable strut connects between the ends of the diverging arms and the frame of the vehicle rearwardly of the pivot connection between the front wheel and the frame. Once adjusted, the struts act like solid links resisting any forces applied by the vehicle when it is being towed. Suitable locks may connect the struts and the vehicle frame providing a measure of security.

Abstract: A securing device for chains used on flatbed trucks comprises an electric pneumatic system with a piston set partially inside a slit and which pushes the chain out. Instead of attaching the chain to a lever arm, the chain is passed through a loop attached to a small piece of chain, which in fact replaces where the lever arm would normally be. Once the chain is passed through the loop, it continues its course over to a slit at which point the user pulls on the chain and introduces the chain links into a slit in order to secure it tightly. In order to remove the links of the chain from the slit, a piston pushes the chain from the slit. The piston which is pneumatic hydraulic or electric is remotely actuated by an electric switch which can be situated in the truck's cabin so as to insure that no one is near the chain when it is released. The slit and piston arrangement are designed to fit into a single compact package.
