Patent number: 5927650Abstract: A conversion device for installation in a recess of an aircraft deck, such that the installed device forms part of the aircraft deck for use in load securement or handling, comprises a turnable member with at least two functional faces. Each functional face comprises a different functional unit, such as active or passive roller units, locking devices, fixation rails, running surfaces or the other standard features. A rotational mounting is provided for the turnable member and is so constructed and so mounted in the recess that the turnable member is enclosed within the recess and can be locked in a position such that one of its functional faces forms at least part of the aircraft deck, i.e. faces upward. This arrangement enables rapid conversion of the deck so that it can be used for various purposes.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1997Date of Patent: July 27, 1999Assignee: Telair International GmbHInventor: Thomas Huber

Patent number: 5871317Abstract: So-called butterfly latches are known, by way of which containers, pallets or similar items of freight can be secured within the cargo area of an aircraft. These comprise a frame that can be attached to holding rails on the floor of the cargo area. In the present latch, in the frame is disposed a double latch hook comprising two arms that are hinged to one another at first ends and at these first ends are provided with hook elements so constructed as to engage and retain items of cargo. At second ends the arms are mounted in the frame so that they can move in a plane of rotation in such a way that when they are struck by an item of cargo travelling in a first horizontal direction parallel to the plane of rotation, the first ends of the arms are deflected downward from an upper operating position toward the frame.Type: GrantFiled: November 15, 1996Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: Telair International GmbHInventors: Thomas Huber, Jurgen Volkel, Richard Holzner

Patent number: 5865579Abstract: An adaptor is provided for a vehicle load bed having stake pockets along lateral edges. The adaptor allows pallets having indented peripheries to roll over the bed and to be locked in place on the bed. The adaptor has a base lying on the bed and guides in the form of upright walls disposed along lateral edges of the base. The guides keep the pallet on the bed as the pallet rides along the bed. Stakes on the bottom of the base are locked into the pockets to retain the adaptor to the bed. Extending from the walls are lips disposed over the pallet so as to limit or eliminate the pallet's vertical travel. The pallets ride on elongate rollers journalled between roller supports. The supports are fixed on the base parallel to the walls. Apertures of the same shape are defined both in the lips and the base and are aligned with one another. To fix the pallets to the adaptor, locking members are passed through the lip apertures, fit with indents of the pallets and passed through the base apertures.Type: GrantFiled: February 27, 1997Date of Patent: February 2, 1999Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: James D. Patent number: 5816758Abstract: To secure containers on the floor of the cargo area of an aircraft, latches are known that comprise a frame and at least one latch hook, which is mounted on the frame so that it can pivot about an axle from a retracted resting position into an upright operating position. If due to inattentiveness of the service personnel the latch hook is left in its operating position and a container strikes against it while it is in this position, the result is often destruction of the floor structure. It is proposed to provide a safety device that allows the latch to be deflected out of the way when it is subjected to a predetermined overload in a direction parallel to the floor of the cargo area.Type: GrantFiled: June 26, 1996Date of Patent: October 6, 1998Assignee: Telair International Cargo Systems GmbHInventor: Thomas Huber

Patent number: 5618139Abstract: A roller restraint assembly is removably mounted on the floor of a vehicle in an outboard location where it restrains cargo movement laterally but permits longitudinal cargo movement along its roller. This assembly has a pivotally mounted restraint arm which engages the base portion of a cargo pallet and restrains the pallet against vertical movement. When the cargo is moved longitudinally it drives the restraint arm aside on its pivot, thereby permitting longitudinal movement of such cargo. A roller is rotatably mounted on the assembly to facilitate longitudinal movement of the cargo while restraining lateral movement thereof. The roller further has a dampener incorporated therein which dampens and attenuates the impact of loads thereagainst.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1995Date of Patent: April 8, 1997Assignee: Ancra International CorporationInventors: Michael C. Patent number: 5370342Abstract: A self-erecting guide for centering and for vertically restraining smaller than full width pallets in a transport vehicle, such as an airplane, having a floor structure and rollers connected to the floor structure and defining a roller plane for rollingly supporting pallets above the floor structure such that the pallets may roll longitudinally includes a plurality of rollers such that pallets contacting the guide contact a rotatable surface resulting in less galling and wear to guide and pallets. The guide generally includes a hinge assembly, fore and aft pivots, a frame, and erection springs. In an erect position, the hinge assembly forms a shallow inverted V in side view with hinge axis at the apex such that a moving full size pallet contacting hinge assembly top forces the hinge assembly into a retracted position below the roller plane.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 1993Date of Patent: December 6, 1994Inventor: Arnold Nordstrom

Patent number: 5112173Abstract: A locking mechanism for latching cargo pieces to a loading floor of aircraft has two latches housed in a common latch housing. The latching claws face in opposite directions. The latches rotate on journal shafts arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft with a lateral on-center spacing between the journal shafts. Tension springs act eccentrically to hold the latches in their extended locking position. In the locking position the latches support each other by bearing against respective stops. An inclined ramp, provided on each latch and extending in the loading direcion, cooperates with a connecting lever joint to assure that the latches can be rolled over by cargo pieces of full width, while pieces of half the full width are arrested in lateral and vertical directions when the mechanism is located between two pieces of half width closely spaced from each other.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1990Date of Patent: May 12, 1992Assignee: Deutsche Airbus GmbHInventors: Wilfried Eilenstein, Guenter Vogg

Patent number: 4892456Abstract: A freight container and trailer combination for transporting the container over land is provided with a self-contained automatic system for unloading the container. A load-supporting belt extends along the floor of the container from a wind-up roll at the forward end of the container. The trailer has a drive drum suspended beneath the back end thereof, and the belt be attached to the drive drum through securing straps. When operated, the drive drum pulls on the belt to move a load out of the container. A drive mechanism is provided at the front end of the trailer for engaging the wind-up roll and rewinding the belt thereon when the container has been unloaded.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 1988Date of Patent: January 9, 1990Assignee: Rolflor Industries, Inc.Inventor: Graham L.
