Bolt Or Nut Adapted To Be Fused Directly To Substructure (e.g., Weld Nut) Patents (Class 411/171)
  • Patent number: 4752171
Abstract: An anchor for secure reception of a fastener such as a screw shank can be frictionally welded, by high-speed rotation of the anchor, to the structure upon which the fastener is mounted. The anchor is molded from frictionally meltable material, for example a typical engineering thermoplastic such as ABS resin. The anchor has a generally cylindrical body with an end face at one end defining a surface for frictional welding to the compatible structure. The end face has an aperture which receives the screw shank or the like. The cylindrical body has a cup-like configuration having a cavity formed therein extending from the end face to an open end at the opposite end of the cylindrical body. A cylindrical boss is formed within the cavity and extends from the aperture at an entrance end for receiving the fastener. The boss has a frangible cap covering the end of its bore opposite the entrance end.

  • Patent number: 4523710
Abstract: A fastener plate is provided for use in securing together structural elements. The plate includes a base plate to which is ultrasonically welded at least one fastening element which may include, for example, an externally-threaded, stud-like fastening element, or an internally-threaded fastening element. A method for fabricating said plate is further described, said method comprising the steps of locating said at least one fastening element on said base plate and then ultrasonically welding said element to said base plate using an ultrasonic welder which includes a center aperture and which is adapted to effect a weld between the annular base portion of the fastening element and the base plate. In an alternative embodiment, at least one locking ring may be used to overlay the annular base portion with the weld being effected between the ring and the base portion.

  • Patent number: 4523883
Abstract: The invention includes a method and a fastener for use in attaching articles to printed circuit boards. The fastener, which has a generally tubular body, flanged at one end, is adapted to receive a screw. The fastener has a polygonal cross-section over a portion of its length. The flange which is located at one end of the tubular body, has an integral spring washer and includes indentations which allow solder to flow from one side of the printed circuit board to the other. The fastener with its integral spring washer provides improved clamping characteristics and avoids problems associated with large coefficients of thermal expansion of printed circuit board material in a direction perpendicular to the board.
