Abstract: A fastener nut for hydroformed parts comprises a nut body for receiving a threaded fastener and a locking ring with depending fingers that is received on the nut body. The nut body is adapted to pierce and then form a collar thereabout in a hydroformed part while the part remains in a die cavity under hydroforming pressure. The nut body and the collar formed thereby have a configuration that prevents turning of the locking ring while permitting turning of the nut body relative to the locking ring on full insertion of the nut in the collar, and a cam surface on the nut body that on partial turning of the nut body then forces the locking ring into locking engagement with the collar to thereby attach the fastener nut to the hydroformed part.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method of joining a sheet metal part to a metal tube to form an assembly. In an overlapping configuration, the parts are held together under a clamping force while a self-piercing rivet is driven through the assembly by a welding electrode. The rivet pierces and passes through the sheet metal part and then through at least substantial portion of the metal tube to thereby form a mechanical interlock. An electrical current is then applied to this mechanical retention to melt a portion of the rivet as well as a portion of the metal surrounding the joining region. The flow of electrical current is then stopped after several welding cycles where the now melted material is allowed to solidify upon cooling, thereby forming a weld.

The tubular portion is positioned within an aperture of a workpiece, such that the bracket portion rests on top of the workpiece. The nut is retained within the bracket portion. Force is applied to a bottom of the workpiece and another opposite force is applied to the stem such that the head expands the tubular portion radially outwardly such that lobes on the tubular portion become embedded into the wall of the workpiece, thereby securing the nut plate to the workpiece. The holding bracket could also be formed of two separate elements, a sleeve having a tubular portion and a bracket.

Abstract: The present technique provides a stemmed washer and fastener assembly, which has a fastener retained in assembly with a stemmed washer. The assembly is particularly useful for applications in which a standoff is desired between a washer and a mating fastener. The stemmed washer includes a washer portion, a retaining portion, and a standoff portion. The retaining portion interfaces with the fastener, such as with a plastically deformed skirt portion, to retain the fastener in the assembly. The standoff portion has a toolfree mounting structure, such as a snap-fit member, to mount the stemmed washer and fastener assembly to one or more panels, thereby forming a fastener-panel assembly.

At a connecting region between flarable portion 34 and cap portion 45, an inner surface 44 of flarable portion 34 is formed recessed outward. With this structure, the T nut can be driven cleanly directly into a solid workpiece object, without the necessity of providing a receiving hole in advance. Also with this structure, a caulking force applied by a caulking counter tool to the tip end portion of the T nut separates the cap portion from the flarable portion and outwardly caulks and flares the flarable portion to secure the T nut to the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 6139237
Abstract: A metallic fastening member of a one piece configuration formed of a metal material includes a shaft and a flange extending outwards from a first end of the shaft. The shaft includes a relatively thin-walled portion to be caulked at a second end opposite to the first end. A female threading is formed at an inner peripheral face of the shaft excluding the portion to be caulked. An annular groove is formed at an outer peripheral face of the shaft or at the inner peripheral face of the portion to be caulked, so that the shaft has a partially thin wall. Since the wall of the shaft is thinner at the annular groove, the metallic fastening member can be fractured at that area so as to be separated into upper and lower pieces when detaching the metallic fastening member from a workpiece. Therefore, the metallic fastening member can be readily removed from the workpiece to facilitate the recovery work for recycling purposes.
