Publication number: 20020154966Abstract: The invention comprises a tolerance compensating mounting device comprising a bushing having an internal and external thread. The bushing is threaded into a part to be mounted to a surface. A bolt is then threaded into a bushing bore using the internal threads. The internal threads cause an interference fit between the bolt shank and the threads, temporarily preventing further insertion of the bolt. The bolt is then turned further, thereby turning the bushing and causing the bushing to unscrew from the part toward the mounting surface until the bushing seats on the mounting surface, thereby completely compensating for a tolerance gap. As the bolt is turned further, at a relatively low torque the sacrificial internal threads are stripped allowing the bolt to be fully torqued into the mounting surface hole, thereby simultaneously connecting the components with a properly torqued connection while compensating for a tolerance gap.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 23, 2001Publication date: October 24, 2002Inventors: Roger Stone, Brian Russell Knight

Patent number: 6162234Abstract: An orthopedic fastener device is based on a strong central shaft that is threaded in a one end region and that, in one embodiment, presents a ramp surface in the other end region. The ramp end is inserted down-hole a bore in bone while an expandable first collet having bendable circumferential flukes is snug to the shaft, presenting a diameter less than the bore. Partial axial withdrawal of the shaft from the bore forces the first collet into and against the shaft's ramp region, causing the collet's flukes to splay and strongly compressively engage the bone, thereby permanently anchoring the fastener's first end. Soft tissue, normally a ligament, is slipped over the shaft region extending beyond the bone, and is optionally grasped by a toothed washer. Another, second, split collet--initially expanded in its internal diameter that has and presents threads--slides along the shaft so as to compress the ligament in position against the bone.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 1996Date of Patent: December 19, 2000Inventors: Yosef Freedland, Scot Ganaja

Patent number: 4768259Abstract: A hinge mounting plate on which a hinge arm is fastenable is adjustable in one direction and fastenable to a furniture part, for example a furniture side wall, by means of fastening screws extending through elongated holes in the mounting plate. In each elongated hole is provided two flaps projecting from the rim of the hole having free front faces pivotally holding the respective fastening screw. The fastening screws have countersunk heads, and when the fastening screws are inserted the countersunk heads press the flaps away from the screw cores.Type: GrantFiled: December 1, 1986Date of Patent: September 6, 1988Assignee: Julius Blum Gesellschaft m.b.H.Inventors: Erich Rock, Helmut Rupprechter

Patent number: 4659246Abstract: Structure for screwing on sheet metal an object having a fitting hole comprises sheet metal having a prepared hole formed therein in the shape of a saucer and also having a saucer-shaped lip which has a thickness equal to the thickness of the sheet metal and defines the prepared hole, and a screw composed of a screwhead, a shank depending from the screwhead, external threads formed around the shank and a substantially conical tip. The screw is passed through the fitting hole in the object and driven into the prepared hole in the sheet metal while catching the leading end of the saucer-shaped lip between the adjacent external threads.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 1986Date of Patent: April 21, 1987Assignee: Crown Screw CorporationInventor: Ichirou Sugiyama

Patent number: 4621961Abstract: A captive panel fastener includes three parts, a screw, a tapered bushing, and a slotted expandable sleeve. The bushing fits closely over the shank of the screw, and has an outwardly extending shoulder or flange at its lower end away from the head of the screw, to retain the expandable sleeve in the expanded condition. The slotted sleeve has a cylindrical upper flange which is generally co-extensive with the head of the screw, and has a lower flange which in the initial or relaxed condition is smaller than the panel hole through which the captive fastener is to be secured. Following insertion of the shank of the screw and the unstressed slotted sleeve into a hole in a panel where the fastener is to be secured, further pressure on the head of the fastener forces the sleeve into the bushing, expanding the lower end of the sleeve, so that its lower slotted flange grips around the lower edge of the panel.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 1985Date of Patent: November 11, 1986Inventor: Bulent Gulistan

Patent number: 4601499Abstract: The invention comprises the essential operating mechanism for a vertical latching assembly for a closure. It provides adjustment screws, accessibly disposed, externally of the closure (door), for adjusting the effective lengths of the elongate, latch bolt-actuating elements. A centercase, which is mounted externally of the door, has attachment blocks slidably coupled thereto. The blocks carry limbs, of the top and bottom bolt-actuating elements, or rod connectors, and the adjustment screws are threadedly engaged with the limbs for moving them, selectively and adjustably, axially of the centercase.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1984Date of Patent: July 22, 1986Assignee: Von Duprin, Inc.Inventor: Kun H. Patent number: 4432680Abstract: This invention provides a shear resistant panel fastener that includes a bolt having a head and a shank with a first relatively large diameter portion adjacent the head and a second smaller diameter threaded portion, a sleeve on the second portion of the shank, a collar around the sleeve and movable to a position around the first portion of the shank, the collar including a means for attachment to a workpiece, and a retainer means for prohibiting movement of the collar off of the sleeve in one direction. The smaller outer end of the shank is adapted to enter a clearance opening in a part for engagement with a floating nut at the opposite end of the opening, while the larger portion of the shank is drawn into the opening and the fastener is tightened. The smaller portion of the shank permits the fastener to be mated when the openings are misaligned while the larger portion of the shank provides shear resistance when the fastener is mated.Type: GrantFiled: June 29, 1981Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: Deutsch Fastener Corp.Inventor: Jorge W.
