  • Patent number: 6162038
Abstract: The retractable die clamp for a pellet mill includes a clamp segment having a generally C-shaped cross-section with radial extending flanges for wedging the die ring flange and mounting or quill flange of the pellet mill frame against one another, securing the ring to the frame. The clamp includes end bolts threaded into the mounting flange. A centrally located Acme fastener has an externally threaded sleeve and a bolt extends through the sleeve and is threaded into the mounting flange. The Acme fastener also includes an internally threaded nut restrained on the clamp for limited axial movement. • Patent number: 5755542
Abstract: A self-drilling/self-tapping fastener which is suitable for attaching a sprinkler system to a metal supporting structure has a driving head and an integral shank with a threaded portion. Process-hardening and threading of the shank harden the shank to a degree of hardness that retains sufficient ductility for resisting vibration loads. The drill tip at the end of the shank and the lead threads adjacent the drill tip are locally hardened to a relatively high degree of hardness for drilling and tapping the metal support members. A graduated transition zone separates the high-hardness zone from the lower-hardness zone, which allows for a single fastener to exhibit two distinctly different material properties in one fastener. The fastener through this dual process also exhibits two distinct load-carrying capabilities.

  • Patent number: 5681135
Abstract: A fastener system includes an applicator for engagement by a tool, and a fastener such as a screw having a first surface with first screw threads in a one hand direction for engaging a workpiece. An attachment mechanism is provided to transfer rotational force from the applicator to the fastener and has second and third screw threads in an opposite hand direction to the first screw threads. The second and third screw threads are interfaced to establish a torque of the predefined magnitude prior to the fastener being attached to the workpiece. When the torque applied by the tool exceeds the predefined magnitude, the attachment mechanism begins to unthread and further application of torque from the tool to the fastener ceases, thereby controlling the applied torque to no greater than the predefined magnitude. The attachment mechanism can be used in a variety of applications including flush mounted heads, shallow aperture installations and multistage torque mountings.

  • Patent number: 5409486
Abstract: A straight, double-threaded arthrodesis screw that comprises a threaded compression nut mounted thereon. The screw consists of a shank containing distal right-handed threads for screwable connection with a threaded hole in the bone, proximal left-handed threads on which the compression nut is screwably mounted, and a longitudinal perforation for engagement with an installation tool. A hole is first drilled and tapped in the bone to provide an internal right-handed thread conforming to the distal threads of the arthrodesis screw. The screw is installed on the bone by screwably mounting its distal portion in the hole. The compression nut is then rotated toward the proximal cortex of the bone until it contacts the soft tissue surrounding the hole in the bone. The soft tissue is secured in place between the compression nut and the bone's cortical surface by further screwing the distal threads into the bone while preventing the compression nut from turning with respect to the clamped tissue.

  • Patent number: 4484849
Abstract: A bolt is fabricated from an elongated threaded rod by severing the rod along a planar surface angularly oriented with respect to a longitudinal axial plane through the rod. A cup-shaped nut has three equicircumferentially spaced lateral locking openings in the side walls adjacent the outer base wall thereof. The cup-shaped nut has an axial length greater than twice the diameter of the opening, with the opening in the half of the nut including the base wall. The nut is threaded onto the severed end of the rod with the base wall abutting the end of the rod. At least one locking opening is exposed to the inclined planar surface, and a pin is forced into the exposed opening with the inner end of the pin terminating within the nut and located immediately adjacent to the inclined surface thereby affecting a positive interconnection of the nut to the rod. In one embodiment the pin is a solid pin formed of a softer metal than the rod.

  • Patent number: 4473984
Abstract: A curtain-wall masonry veneer anchor system provides tolerances for accommodating installation misalignment and similarly for accommodating in-service load stresses while at the same time preventing loosening in service, even when installed through sheathing/or insulation covering wall structure to which the system is affixed, such as a masonry wall or metal stud or structural steel.

  • Patent number: 4253509
Abstract: A theft deterrent device for "bolting" pieces of material together, comprising:(1) a nut-like device having a smooth outer surface resistant to the effects of conventional wrenches,(2) a male threaded member having an internally threaded axial bore, adapted to threadedly engage the nut-like member,(3) a locking screw for threadedly engaging the internal bore of the male member, and having a head that mates with the smooth outer surface of the nut-like device, resulting in an essentially smooth, continuous outer surface resistant to removal using conventional wrenches, and(4) an environmental plug for inserting into the driving recess or bore of the screw to prevent foreign and corrosive matter from entering the recess. The locking screw threads are of opposite hand to that of the nut-like portion, so that the locking screw must first be removed before the nut may be removed.
