  • Patent number: 6305891
Abstract: A fastening device comprises a “U” shaped spacer wherein the recess of the “U” shape is captured by the upper cross bar of a staple when the staple is used to fasten a protective sheeting to an item to be stored or transported. The spacer has a flat bottom surface and a flat side surface. The flat bottom surface increases the surface area of the staple in contact with the item during transport thereby reducing the chances that the protective sheeting may become torn from the item. The flat side surface increases the surface area of the standard staple during removal of the plastic sheeting because the spacer rotates about the crossbar of the staple. This rotation of the spacer reduces frictional contact between the spacer and the protective sheeting so that when the plastic sheeting is pulled from the lumber, the plastic sheeting will pull the spacer and the staple therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5634756
Abstract: A power actuated fastener assembly for use with a power actuated gun having a broad bearing surface and a raised portion for holding a stud and raising the pointed end above the bearing surface. The raised portion or cone shape forms a gap that widens from the point of the shank to the bearing surface. This creates a stable fastener assembly and raises the pointed end of the stud at or near the bearing surface of the fastener assembly. The fastener assembly can be driven in a single step with a power actuated gun without the necessity of partially driving the fastener assembly into the structure being fastened into a masonry surface. Additionally, the raised portion or cone shaped portion automatically strips away or breaks the plastic fluting commonly associated with such fasteners and is often undesirable compressed under the head of such fasteners. Thereby, a safer, more efficient power actuated fastener is obtained.

  • Patent number: 5564876
Abstract: A corrosion-resistant, headed fastener, such as a nail for exterior applications, is made from a carbon steel wire pre-coated with a protective, metallic layer having corrosion-resistant properties, the protective, metallic layer being discontinuous at a region on a leading end of the pre-coated wire. After at least part of a protective, metallic cap having corrosion-resistant properties is disposed near the leading end of the pre-coated wire, at least part of the protective, metallic cap is welded to the leading end of the pre-coated wire, so as to cover the region where the protective, metallic layer is discontinuous, by impact welding, as the fastener is formed from the precoated wire in such a manner that the fastener is formed with a shank and with a head, which is formed by deformation of the leading end of the pre-coated wire.

  • Patent number: 5513935
Abstract: A decorative cover for the head of a nail and other simlar fasteners used in the carpentry and upholstery trades. Ordinary nails can prove unsightly when used on particular works. The invention is a decorative cover which utilizes a slot to attach the cover to the head of a standard nail. The decorative cover is of any shape and color desired, thereby offering limitless design possibilities. After attachment of the invention to the nail head, the nail is driven into the body of work with no adverse effects on the cover. The invention, then, allows the aesthetic characteristics of a body of work to be enhanced without sacrificing the utilitarian characteristics of the nail.

  • Patent number: 5509769
Abstract: A barbed light weight concrete fastener and plate comprises a fastener with a head and two bendable legs. Each leg has a barb and a bump protruding therefrom. The fastener is pushed through a base ply and into a roof deck of cementitious material. The legs diverge to capture a concrete wedge between them. The barbs dig into the concrete wedge to increase resistance to a pullout force. The bumps create pressure points with the cementitious material that further resist pullout. A plate may be interposed between the fastener and the base ply. The plate has a number of openings therethrough of relatively large area. The openings are filled with plugs of asphalt that adhere to the base ply. Pulling of the base ply is resisted by the plate acting against the shear areas between the asphalt plugs and the base ply.

  • Patent number: 5417534

  • Patent number: 5415511
Abstract: A roofing and siding fastener for securing underlayments, exterior insulation sheathings, and similar membranes to a substrate. The disclosure comprises a cap portion having a rectangular body with oppositely extended legs. Said legs are bent downward and have heels situated at the ends. The cap has a nail centrally inserted through the body. The installer positions the fastener over the material to be secured and strikes the nail head, thereby driving the fastener into a substrate. As the cap portion engages the material, the heels act to deflect the flattening legs over the top surface of the material instead of allowing the legs to puncture. Each flattened leg now becomes a spring-like binder which not only provides superior holding power over the prior art, they also flex upward to dampen strong winds which can blow these underlayments off. This flexibility greatly enhances the effectiveness of underlayments in a "dry-in" procedure.

  • Patent number: 5286153
Abstract: Nails are driven into hard receiving materials such as concrete, rock, metal and the like by explosive powder charge operated setting tools. To achieve the high mechanical strength required for such nails, the nails are formed of two parts, one a shank and the other a head fitted onto the shank. While the head is formed of a deformable corrosion resistant steel, the shank is formed of an austenitic steel alloyed with nitrogen having a very high mechanical strength. The steel forming the shank can only be shaped to a very limited extent, whereby a narrow flange is provided on the rear end of the shank. A disk fitted on the shank serves as a guide for the nails during the driving operation.

  • Patent number: 5261770
Abstract: A nail fastener assembly for attaching thin metal sheets includes an axially extending nail with a conically shaped shank having ballistic-like tip at its leading end and a head at its trailing end. A disk is fitted on the leading end of the shank with a sleeve secured on the shank between the disk and the head. When the nail is driven by a setting tool, the sleeve acts on the disk in the region of the tip, so that the transmission of all forces acts on an annular radially outer surface on the leading surface of the disk. The leading end surface of the disk has a radially inner conically shaped first recess and an annular second recess encircling the outer edge of the first recess and spaced inwardly from the radially outer edge of the disk. Accordingly, the radially outer contact surface bears against the metal sheet being attached and provides high transverse stresses.
