With Means To Indicate Application Of Predetermined Stress-strain Patents (Class 411/8)
  • Patent number: 5472302
Abstract: A bolt includes a movable pin in the center thereof. This pin can freely move up and down in the bolt. If the pin protrudes out of bolt a predetermined distance after the bolt is screwed into a blind bolt hole, then an inspector knows that the bolt is fully engaged. If, on the other hand, the bolt is not fully engaged, the pin will not protrude the predetermined distance out of the bolt. A second embodiment of the similar invention is a stud having an indicator pin. In third and fourth embodiments, the bolts and studs have indicator pins including grease zerks. These grease zerks allow the holes to be filled with grease to prevent damage to the hole due to corrosion.

  • Patent number: 5417520
Abstract: A nut for use in a bolt assembly having an adhesive anchoring capsule for attaching roof or wall supports to the rock structure of a mine. The nut has deformities in its continuous internal thread that cause the continuous internal thread to bulge inwardly toward the axis of the bore. The deformities limit the advance of the nut upon a bolt and are formed by stamping dimples into one face of the nut. When an overcoming torque is applied, the deformities in the continuous internal thread are pushed radially outwardly and the nut is allowed to further advance upon the bolt. Because the deformities do not form a break in the thread, which remains continuous, no fragments are formed to damage the bolting tool, and the bolt thread remains undamaged so that a second nut can be threaded on it to hold a screen or the like.

Abstract: A moving slide has a pair of flexible curtains mounted to its front and rear surfaces, the curtains being attached at opposite ends to front and rear support posts mounted to a base. The support posts have upper and lower pulleys. A cable is connected to the front of the slide and runs in this fashion: first horizontally across the top pulley, thence to the lower pulley, thence to the other support post, thence upwardly and finally around to the horizontal portion which connects to the rear of the slide. The cable is tensioned to a predetermined load which remains constant throughout the slide travel as the front and rear horizontal portions of the cable move. The flexible curtains are suspended from, but are not rigidly attached to, the cable. Thus, as the curtains expand and contract, the moving horizontal portions of the tensioned cable ride smoothly through the curtains, maintaining curtain support.

  • Patent number: 4410296
Abstract: A washer is described which is used in the construction of the support for the roof of a mine. The washer is fabricated such that finger like projections rupture in stages as the tension on bolts and pressure in the strata of the roof of the mine increases beyond structurely safe limits. The rupturing of the washer emits audible warning signals and also provides a visual indication of an unsafe condition.

  • Patent number: 4379707
Abstract: A splined joint between a shaft and a muff, with a support bearing in a tapered recess at the end of the muff and contractable onto the shaft to support same by a retaining member which is screwed onto the muff. The retaining member comprises a ring of a plastics or rubber material, the screw threads of which will yield to prevent over-tightening and possible binding of the bearing on the shaft.

  • Patent number: 4378180
Abstract: A yieldable mine roof support fixture in which a support member is anchored in a borehole in the geologic mass and is formed with a divergent tapering end adjacent the mine roof which cooperates with a support plate having an opening engaged with the tapering end and yieldable so as to allow the plate to slide or move along the tapering end for imposing resistance to movement of the geologic mass which varies from substantially constant to progressively increasing resistance.

  • Patent number: 4349299
Abstract: The tension head comprises essentially a sleeve with a threaded bore having opposed keyways extending therethrough. In those keyways is supported a U-shaped stop member. When the sleeve is turned up on the end of the bolt protruding from the hole until that end abuts the cross piece of the stop member, rotation of the sleeve rotates the bolt. When the inner end of the bolt is bonded to the rock, further rotation of the sleeve causes the stop member to break or deform. The lower end of the bolt pushes the deformed stop member or its fragments out through the bottom of the sleeve along the keyways.

  • Patent number: 4338054
Abstract: A metal fastener characterized by a sharp yield point and improved elongation beyond the yield point and a tensile strength (force) at least as large as the specified minimum for the grade, size, and threads of said metal fastener, which metal fastener has a nominal diameter D and comprises: one or more externally threaded components having threads of nominal diameter D with a stress area A.sub.s ; a nonthreaded shank component having a diameter D.sub.s equal to or substantially equal to the nominal diameter D extending axially with the threaded components; the shank component characterized by a reduced portion of axial length L.sub.r, the reduced portion having an axially transverse cross-sectional area A.sub.r sufficiently less than the stress area A.sub.s of the threaded components along substantially the axial length L.sub.

  • Patent number: 4337012
Abstract: This invention relates to an anchor bolt expansion unit and the bolt assembly using such a unit. The unit consists of a plurality of leaves connected together by a bail having a flat cap and fingers secured one to each leaf. The flat cap is dimpled to ensure an even distribution of tension applied to the fingers before the bail yields in use and also has a line of weakness to ensure that it will yield at a predetermined axial pressure. The fingers of the bail are also weakened at points in their length to a strength slightly greater than that resulting at the peripheral line of weakness.

  • Patent number: 4295761
Abstract: A resin or grout anchored rock or mine roof nut and anchor assembly including an elongated cylindrical anchor to be inserted in a bore hole in assembled relation with a nut after insertion of a destructible adhesive resin or grout containing cartridge. The anchor includes an elongated threaded rod to be received in threaded portions of the nut and the nut includes a frangible disc normally held by crimped lip portions forming a stop wall to stop rotation of the nut relative to the anchor when the nut and anchor are assembled at a first relative axial position and operative when the anchor is restrained against rotation in the bore hole by setting of the adhesive resin and torque above a selected threshold is applied to the nut to dilate the crimping and expel the disc to accommodate further threaded insertion of the nut onto the anchor.
