  • Patent number: 4678386
Abstract: A sheet binding apparatus, for attaching loose sheets to one or more folders, has a completely automatic binding process after insertion of the folder(s). This is carried out by a heating assembly, the current supply to which is controlled by a micro-processor having inputs received from a starter device of light detector type, a temperature detector device of thermistor type and a timer device. The timer device is activated by the micro-processor when the temperature detector device indicates working temperature at the heating assembly. In one aspect of the binding process it is also related to the thickness of the folder(s) to be bound. This is carried out by a current control device acting on the supply circuit for the heating assembly in such a way that the thicker the folders inserted, the more current is allowed to the heating assembly.

  • Patent number: 4639177
Abstract: A book sewing machine has an inserter for plates for indicating the planes of separation between the books. Each plate is disposed in the separation plane in correspondence with the top of the adjacent face of the contiguous books on that side of the books facing the loader. The machine also has a gluer for applying a layer of glue to the backs of the books which advance towards the discharge zone. Close to the latter is a separator constituted by a cutting blade which traverses the pile of books so that it cuts the layer of glue on the backs and simultaneously cuts the thread connecting the last book to the next book, thus effecting the separation. An operating cycle of the separator device is started each time a control circuit is given an enabling signal by a detecting device for detecting the passage of a plate. The position of the detection device preferably coincides with that of the cutting blade which may be a separate element or which may be part of the plate.

  • Patent number: 4507037
Abstract: In a booklet binding machine a flat cover signature is added in leading edge register to a single or collated signatures moving in a travel path prior to saddle folding. The signatures are passed as a unit to a stitching station to be jogged and center stitched. Overlapping pairs of arbor mounted rotary slitting blades at opposing sides of the travel path head and tail trim the signatures during its movement by feed rollers between the pairs of slitting blades. The uppermost arbor and blades are angularly rotated at a greater speed than the lowermost blades to insure a clean cut of the signatures. Cooperating presser rings on the arbors cooperate with the slitting blades prevent buckling of the signatures and strip tail-out of the trimmed edges thereof. Bearings mounting the uppermost presser rings on the upper arbor allow the uppermost rings to rotate at the rate of travel of the lowermost rings.

  • Patent number: 4456379
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a process for determining the thickness of adhesive layers placed on book block backings by initially measuring the position of a backing before adhesive is applied to establish a reference point, applying adhesive, then measuring the position of the backing with adhesive to determine the thickness of the adhesive layer. Distances to a standard reference plane may be measured both before and after application of the adhesive, and the differences in respective positions may be used to determine thickness of the adhesive layer. Two such measurements before and after adhesive application are recommended, with the readings averaged to give a mean thickness of the adhesive layer. Measurements are preferably carried out by means of laser beam technology, with the aid of a beam splitter.
