A cylindrically shaped mandrel is spaced apart from a glidable block. The plastic pre-formed spiral binding element is fed onto the mandrel from the distal end thereof, with the leading edge of the binding element facing and spaced apart from the book. A spring is mounted on the slidable block for engaging and adjustably press the spiral binding element on the mandrel so that the upper portion of the binding element is spaced from the top of the mandrel.

The device includes a front section, a rear section having at least the same length as the binding element and being dimensioned such that, when the device is inserted into the binding element, the ring elements successively come into contact with the outer areas of the rear section, and that the free ends of the ring elements are spaced at least up to a specified distance from the spine, and a curved surface area provided at least in the rear section and being partly engaged by the inner surfaces of the ring elements.

The guide includes a rotary convoluting tool at the inserting station and a stationary cylindrical worm coaxial with the tool and extending from the latter to the binding station. Successive foremost binders are threaded into the rows of holes in successive stacks at the binding station and are severed from the respective following binders by a set of knives when the threading steps are completed.

The binding comb has a series of upstanding fixed spaced pickets having sufficient clearance between each other to allow the binding element curled fingers to be manually shifted laterally relative to the fixed pickets such that each of the curled fingers surrounds a portion of the push fingers. The binding mechanism also has a device for moving the push fingers outwardly from the pickets to uncurl the curled fingers so that a stack of punched paper sheets can be placed on the uncurled fingers.

    Abstract: A paper punch and binding apparatus has two punch mechanisms, one for punching round holes in a paper sheets stack and one for punching rectangular holes in another paper sheet stack. A single layer or crank simultaneously operates and drives a series of round end punches to shear the round holes and a punch plate with integral rectangular punch elements shear rectangular holes. A four-bar linkage connects the lever to the punch plate and the series of the punches in a manner that both the plate and punches are driven in a vertical straight line and with a greater mechanical advantage at the start and over the first increments of the punching operation. In a preferred embodiment, a binding station is provided in an apparatus base portion particularly for binding with a Douvry-type plastic resilient loops binding element. The binding station has an operating knob which operates a simple gear interconnect train for uncurling the resilient loops and allowing the punched hole stack to be inserted thereon.

The mechanism includes a comb having teeth or tines for holding a binding element having a plastic-type backbone and curled binding fingers. A slidable hook mechanism is used to engage and uncurl the binding fingers so that the punched and apertured material can be bound thereon. The comb is mounted so as to be transversely slidable from an original position to a second position. A biasing spring is provided for returning the comb from the second position to the original position. This slidable comb cooperates in minimizing damage in the event these binding fingers are inoperatively jammed or wedged between the hook and the comb.

A guide is mounted to the table for securement at a position to said table. The guide includes at least one surface that in the secured position is selectively movable between a paper engaging position and a cover engaging position, each of these positions being generally transverse to the row of punches. The cover engaging position is laterally and outwardly offset of the paper engaging position. Thus an oversized cover punched using the guide in the cover engaging position with overlay edges of paper punched using the guide means in the paper engaging position.

    Abstract: There is disclosed herein a combined punch and binding machine which includes a frame, a plurality of pin receiving die openings, and a punch mechanism carried on the frame. An adjustable back gauge plate is provided for engaging an edge of the material to be punched and is positioned rearwardly of the die openings. The plate has a forwardly extending slide for adjusting the plate relative to the die openings and an adjustment indicia are carried on the slide. A cover is provided for covering the punch mechanisms and through the adjustment slide and for alignment with the indicia on the slide. A thickness gauge is carried on the cover for measuring the thickness of the material to be punched as the indicia thereon for indicating the measured thickness. The thickness indicia on the gauge is correlated to the adjustment indicia on the adjustment slide so that the position of the back gauge plate is set relative to the measured thickness of material to be punched.
