  • Patent number: 8550763
Abstract: A carriage with a cell carrier engages and retains a vertically driven cell so that the cell and its contents, such as a data storage cartridge, may be moved laterally from one linear library to another. A portal engagement device of the cell carrier includes a movable rack so that a pinion of the cell may move up or down the rack, and has pins that, when the device is down, engage a library vertical portal having a fixed rack. A cam state machine of the cell carrier guides a spring loaded cam follower hook of the cell in a pattern to lock the hook in position and, when hooked, attempted downward movement of the vertically driven cell moves the portal engagement device upward to disengage the pins of the portal engagement device from the vertical portal. The carriage may then transport the cell to another vertical portal.

  • Patent number: 5088873
Abstract: A mixed freight handling system, particularly for limited access areas such as an end-opening trailer at a dock, includes a telescoping conveyor overlapping a fixed conveyor and translatable into the trailer to receive hand liftable articles. A freight manipulator includes an appropriate and changeable freight manipulator tool mounted on an extendible boom and is translatable adjacent and along the conveyors to the dock edge. The tool is extendible into the trailer for engaging and supporting manually nonliftable freight for transfer to or from a freight conveyor extending alongside the path of the manipulator. The telescoping conveyor includes a base section engaged with a track, an inclinable lift section, and a liftable and laterally swingable head section. The manipulator includes a chassis engaged with a track straddling the fixed and telescoping conveyors and has a tunnel formed therethrough, allowing the passage of articles on the conveyors therebeneath.

  • Patent number: 4911599
Abstract: A mobile installation for loading, transporting and unloading track parts such as ties on, in and from open top railroad cars including a train mounted for mobility along a railroad track and having a plurality of open top railroad cars. Adjacent ones of the railroad cars are coupled together and each one of the railroad cars has two parallel side walls with top edges extending in the direction of the railroad track, and two end walls, the end wals of the adjacent railroad cars defining respective gaps therebetween. A power-driven crane is provided for loading and unloading the track parts and has an undercarriage supporting the crane for mobility in the direction of the railroad track. There is also a track supporting the undercarriage of the crane for mobility above the top edges of the railroad cars in said direction. The track includes two parallel guide rails mounted on the top edges of the railroad cars and is spaced apart a distance corresponding to the gage of the crane undercarriage.

Abstract: A hoist support and method for fabricating the support are disclosed in which a swivel yoke is provided which has a through opening and is affixed to an overhead frame. A swivel body is affixed to the hoist below the yoke and has a swivel head with a swivelable surface positioned in supporting engagement within the opening in the yoke. The swivel head both retains the hoist suspended from the overhead frame and permits vertical and horizontal swiveling movement of the hoist relative to the frame. The swivel yoke may include bearing inserts supporting the swivel head within the opening in the yoke and providing a replaceable bearing surface.

  • Patent number: 4599032
Abstract: A rolling base assembly for truck cranes which allows movement of the truck crane under load-carrying conditions. The device comprises a fixed chain installed along the centerline of a flatbed trailer. A rolling base, having outboard roller housing assemblies, is caused to crawl along the fixed chain by means of motor driven sprocket devices attached to the rolling base. The roller housing assemblies are designed to move along the standard I-beam construction of a flatbed truck.

  • Patent number: 4599027
Abstract: Cargo containers are moved between a dock and a ship by a crane which has a vertically movable landing platform, a waterside trolley for moving cargo between the ship and the landing platform, and a landside trolley for moving cargo between the dock and the landing platform. The landing platform is moved to different elevations to change the extent of vertical movement performed on the cargo by each of the tolleys. In the course of operations, the landing platform is movable to an elevation which corresponds approximately to the higher of: (a) the elevation of the designated location on the ship where the article of cargo is to loaded or unloaded, or (b) the elevation of the highest obstacle between the dock and the designated location; and, both trolleys are operated while the landing platform is at this elevation.

  • Patent number: 4568233
Abstract: The storage and retrieval apparatus of this invention comprises parallel tracks, each normally supporting numerous upright storage bins that are in close proximity to one another and to bins on laterally adjacent tracks. Each bin is open at its front and is mounted on wheels to roll rearward along its track. An overhead carrier lifts a desired bin off its track to a level above the other bins and carries it forward. A pusher near the front end of that track pushes rearward on the front bin, moving bins back to fill the space left by the lifted bin, which is then lowered into the space at the front of the track for loading or unloading, through its open front. On the top of each bin is an identifier plate distinctive to the bin. A sensor on the overhead carrier, connected with a computer, reads the identifier plates as the carriage moves rearward along a track and is thus able to find and lift a desired bin even though it is in a random position along the track.

  • Patent number: 4515282
Abstract: A rescue vehicle has a crane boom, hoist winch and rescue winch mounted on a crane turret that is rotatable about a vertical axis. A cable from the respective winches are extended along the crane boom to an associated block that is mounted near the outer end of the boom. Another block is mounted on the bumper of the vehicle to receive the cable from the rescue winch. The rescue winch is ten to twenty times more powerful than the hoist winch. During a vehicle retrieval operation the rescue winch is used to provide the horizontal pulling power while the hoist winch is used to provide the vertical pulling power. A Y-shaped stay bar is mounted on the block on the bumper and is used to support the crane boom at its outer end.
