Patent number: 8079799Abstract: A lifting apparatus is adapted for use in lifting a container having a pair of channels, each of the channels having a pair of open ends. The lifting apparatus includes an elongated support bar and a hook assembly mounted on each end of the support bar. Each of the hook assemblies includes a pair of hooks and a hydraulic cylinder and piston for rotating the hooks between open and closed positions. The container is lifted by lowering the support bar with the hooks in the open position until the hooks can be rotated into the open ends of the two channels. The hooks are then rotated to the closed position so that the hooks extend into the channels. The lifting apparatus is then raised to lift the container.Type: GrantFiled: May 9, 2007Date of Patent: December 20, 2011Assignee: Petersen Industries, IncInventors: Lee F. Rathbun, David H. Osburn

The system includes a cart for lateral movement upon a set of rails, the cart having wings for lifting hanging articles off the rails and setting hanging articles onto the rails. The cart has a lifting mechanism, which can be lowered so as to drop hanging articles down to a work area or to raise the hanging articles for placement upon the rails. The system may be employed in a greenhouse for moving hanging baskets of plants.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2002Publication date: December 4, 2003Inventors: Rob Hendriks, Ken Giesbrecht

Patent number: 6644909Abstract: A hanger for transportation of objects along a suspended runway includes an upper part constrained to run along a runway and a lower part which supports the load and is connected to the upper part through a raising and lowering system. Between the two parts is a stiffening structure against oscillations which comprises three stiffening members one of which has a parallelogram and is arranged on the median plane of the hanger while the other two are made with oscillating rods each of which is placed on one side of the central one. The oscillating rods are advantageously made up of pairs of triangles connected by an articulation to the vertex and hinged at the base in a direction transverse to the hanger.Type: GrantFiled: May 29, 2001Date of Patent: November 11, 2003Assignee: Fata Handling S.p.A.Inventor: Donato Patrito

Patent number: 6592321Abstract: A device for manually maneuvering a handling unit, includes a mounting structure for attachment to a handling unit which is operated through actuation of a control mechanism connected to the mounting structure. A handle frame is connectable to the mounting structure and includes a cross member and a pair of elongate grip elements detachably coupled to the axial ends of the cross member which is releasably attached to the mounting structure. The cross member and the grip elements can be selected from a plurality of cross members and grip elements of varying lengths to thereby establish a construction kit that allows construction of handle frames of varying configuration.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 2001Date of Patent: July 15, 2003Assignee: Demag Cranes & Components GmbHInventors: Thomas Bönker, Klaus-Dieter Gabriel, Uwe Lichtenvort

Patent number: 6579053Abstract: A robotic containerization and palletizing system having a multiple-fingered end effector. The system includes a frame that defines one or more cells. Each cell has one gantry-type robot, which is mounted in a set of tracks on top of the frame. The robot is movable along two axes and has an arm to which the end effector is mounted. The end effector is designed to grasp trays, tubs, and similar items from a conveyor system running through the cell and load them in a cart or on a pallet. The items are gripped by two sets of fingers. One set of fingers may be mounted to a first plate and another set of fingers may be mounted to a carriage that moves in a horizontal direction, either toward or away from the first set of fingers. Each finger has a main shaft and a bent tip. The shafts are rotatable such that the tips can be moved underneath or out from under a load, depending upon whether a pick-up or drop-off operation is being performed.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2000Date of Patent: June 17, 2003Assignee: ABB Flexible Automation, Inc.Inventors: Robert S. Publication number: 20030086779Abstract: A multiple block lifting device that includes two support arms pivotally connected at the opposite ends enabling the support arms to move from a closed, parallel configuration to an open, linear configuration. Attached to each arm is at least one block attachment unit that selectively connects to one block. In the preferred embodiment, the movement of the support arms and each block attachment unit is controlled by hydraulic cylinders and a main control valve. When paired blocks are aligned on a pallet, the device is in a closed, parallel configuration, and each block lifting unit engages a block. The device is then lifted and the support arms are aligned in the open, linear configuration. Each arm may include an optional extension arm that enables the device to lift additional blocks.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 7, 2002Publication date: May 8, 2003Inventors: Loren Harris, David Harris, Brett Harris

Publication number: 20030063969Abstract: An article handling apparatus embodied, for example, as a vending machine, includes a controllably positioned hose-type dispenser for retrieving articles from an article storage area. A first end of the hose receives article securing energy (e.g., suction), and a second end is adapted to secure to and extract a selected article from the storage area. A hose positioning mechanism controllably positions the second end of the hose for retrieving articles from the article storage area. In order to maximize the height of the article storage volume, as well as provide other advantages, the following aspects of the invention are provided :1. the hose positioning mechanism maintains a constant height during hose positioning, 2. a hose drive means drives the hose in the article extraction direction by passing "THROUGH"the hose positioning mechanism, 3.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 25, 2002Publication date: April 3, 2003Inventor: Munroe Chirnomas

Patent number: 6508617Abstract: Manipulators for safe, 360 degree rotation along at least two axes and horizontal and vertical translation of large, heavy objects are disclosed. Manipulators of the present invention include a support structure or open framework, a carriage, and an inner framework assembly. In some embodiments of the present invention, the inner framework assembly can be oriented substantially horizontally or substantially vertically. The inner framework assembly engages the work piece through the use of a support member that has one or more extension arms attached to its bottom surface which have one of more part grips at its ends. The extension arms further include a pair of rotating shafts that allow the work piece to rotate 360 degrees preferably along the central axis of the part grips. The inner framework assembly is capable of rotating 360 degrees about the axis of the central shaft.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2000Date of Patent: January 21, 2003Assignee: ABB Technology AGInventor: Charles Gressett

Publication number: 20020150451Abstract: A method for automatic pick up from a container (7) of hosiery articles, in species socks (2), knee socks and the like of knitted material. An actuator (4) brings a support (5) to which a grasping device (6) is suspended at a predetermined distance. The grasping device (6) can be pushed to approach the support (5) independently from the actuator (4). The actuator (4) and the grasping device (6) are carried integrally above a container (7) of socks (2) and lowered integrally until the grasping device (6) contacts the free surface of the bulk of socks (2). The actuator (4) continues to be lowered according to a brief additional stroke and the grasping device (6) delays the closure even after a first contact with the free surface of socks (2). The approaching of the support (5) to the grasping device (6) is then detected and the latter is closed onto socks (2) grasping at least one of them (20).Type: ApplicationFiled: March 21, 2002Publication date: October 17, 2002Inventor: Benito Manini
