Abstract: An ultra-high speed vacuum pump evacuation system includes a first stage ultra-high speed turbofan and a second stage conventional turbomolecular pump. The turbofan is either connected in series to a chamber to be evacuated, or is optionally disposed entirely within the chamber. The turbofan employs large diameter rotor blades operating at high linear blade velocity to impart an ultra-high pumping speed to a fluid. The second stage turbomolecular pump is fluidly connected downstream from the first stage turbofan. In operation, the first stage turbofan operates in a pre-existing vacuum, with the fluid asserting only small axial forces upon the rotor blades. The turbofan imparts a velocity to fluid particles towards an outlet at a high volume rate, but moderate compression ratio. A fan system of this type reduces the fan inefficiency caused when one fan in a series mounted pair is not operating, either because it is free-wheeling or in a locked rotor condition. When non-operational, the fan blades of the collapsible fan fold inward due to airflow generated by the operational fan over the collapsible blades. The ability of the blades to fold reduces the inefficiency of the operational fan, having less of an effect on fan life. Also, because the flow of air is less restricted, proper airflow can be maintained, thus preventing overheating of the computer.

Abstract: A ribbon drive pumping apparatus and method for liquids is disclosed wherein the inherent centrifugal separation that occurs adjacent the pump inlet is used to remove contaminants. The pump has an extended tube having an intake at a first end and an outlet at a second end. A ribbon formed of helical coils is mounted in the tube for rotation and the frequency of the coils decreases from the first end to the second end of the tube. Liquid is collected at the first end, contaminants are centrifugally separated and sorbed or bled off, an axial component of velocity of the liquid is increased via the rotating ribbon, and the purified liquid is ejected from the second end to provide pumping of the liquid. A central opening helps decrease cavitation and can be useful for pumping live fish.

  • Patent number: 6210105
Abstract: A flow directing device, system and method for delivery and pumping medium to high consistency stock slurries eliminates bridging of stock, creates a non-vortexing improved flow into the pump suction of a pump, is independent from pump operation, minimizes “slip/stick”, and does not mix air into the pulp fibers. The flow directing device is a low-speed, mechanical device including a two-stage turbine, a turbine shaft, a turbine mounting adapter, a gear reducer and an electric motor. The device is used with a dropleg to assist flow of medium to high consistency suspensions (pulp) to the pump, preferably a rotary pump. The flow directing device is operated independently from the pump. The flow directing device and pump work in concert with each other to form a stock pumping system capable of handling paper stock consistencies from 8-18% without the problems associated with other types of pumping systems.

  • Patent number: 5639208
Abstract: A rotary turbine employs rotors that are rotated primarily by the frictional forces of a pressurized medium flowing through a gap that separates the rotors from the stationary housing. The rotors are coupled to a source of pressurized medium that creates a medium flow through the gap. The frictional forces between the flowing medium and the rotors create a torque that rotates the rotors. A compressor is formed of a rotor assembly that includes first and second counter-rotating rotors having substantially smooth surfaces. The rotors are separated by a gap that allows the medium to flow therethrough, with the surface of at least one of the rotors contacting the medium, such that the flow of the medium through the gap is induced by surface friction between the contact surface and the medium.

  • Patent number: 5611663
Abstract: A geared multishaft turbocompressor with impellers arranged in series in terms of flow, which are fastened to two or more pinion shafts, which are arranged in parallel to one another and are driven directly via a central gear or indirectly via pinion shafts on the circumference of the central gear. Two or more compressor impellers are arranged in the same direction of flow in the area of the high-pressure stages III and IV on a pinion shaft. An intercooler is arranged between an intermediate outlet housing and an intermediate inlet nozzle. In stage III, the gas enters the impeller through the inlet nozzle, and it leaves the compressor via an intermediate outlet housing. After intercooling, the gas again enters stage IV via the inlet nozzle, and it leaves this stage via the outlet housing after flowing through the second impeller. An analogous arrangement of the stages Ia, IIa, IIIa is used in the radial expander, with opposite direction of the gas flow.

Abstract: A cooling subsystem and method for a chassis of a computer system. The cooling subsystem comprises: (1) first and second cooling fans having first and second motors associated therewith for driving the first and second cooling fans, respectively and (2) a common plenum substantially shrouding and providing a pathway for air communication between the first and second cooling fans, the first and second fans cooperating to provide an optimum rate of air flow from without the chassis to within the chassis to provide air exchange within the chassis, the air flow within the chassis being in a predetermined direction to provide directed cooling of a specified device within the chassis, the common plenum allowing the first and second fans to continue to cooperate to provide a minimum air flow to provide a minimum air exchange within the chassis, the air flow remaining in the predetermined direction to continue the directed cooling of the specified device when a selected one of the first and second motors fails.

  • Patent number: 5518363
Abstract: A rotary turbine including a source of a pressurized medium and a rotor assembly. In one embodiment, the rotor assembly includes first and second rotors, and the surface of each rotor is substantially smooth. The pressurized medium flows between the rotors, turning the rotors. The smooth rotor surfaces do not cause substantial turbulence in the medium. Accordingly, the exit velocity of the pressurized medium is maintained at a substantial higher level than if the rotors included blades or other protrusions extending outwardly.

Abstract: Inside a single casing the turbopump comprises a main shaft driven by a turbine, a secondary shaft coaxial with the main shaft, a low pressure impeller mounted on the secondary shaft to create a medium pressure flow which is brought back to flow parallel to the axis of the turbopump by a baffle and which is deflected through 180.degree. in a return channel so as to come back parallel to the axis of the turbopump towards a high pressure impeller mounted on the main shaft inside the secondary shaft.
