Motion About Parallel Axes Patents (Class 416/119)
  • Patent number: 4039848
Abstract: A wind operated generator employing counterrotating propellers with an alternating current generator positioned between the blades of the propellors and spacing the same. The propellors and generator parts are mounted on concentric shafts supported in a positive drive structure in which the shafts are tied together through gearing to insure positive starting and counterrotation of the propellers in a positive equal drive system. A governor associated with one of the shafts governs the operational speed of rotation of both propellers to protect the propellors and generator.

  • Patent number: 4039849
Abstract: An electric battery powered automobile has a wind driven rotor device driving a generator to furnish supplementary power to batteries of the electrical power system of the automobile. The rotor device includes a power rotor having a pair of curved blades forming an overlapping, S configuration, and an outer series of turbine blades which pivot to provide minimum resistance when moving into the wind and provide maximum power when moving with the wind. The rotor device is mounted between two discs one of which serves as the armature of an electrical power generator. The generator has a plurality of parallel windings which at low speeds are connected in series to the batteries and, at high speeds, are connected in parallel to the batteries. The armature can be mounted separately and caused to couple with the rotor assembly through a clutch when the rotor has reached a desired speed.

  • Patent number: 4037983
Abstract: Wind motor comprising one or more sets of rotors, arranged each to project outwardly with respect to the adjacent one in the direction of the wind, such that only the useful part of the subsequent rotor is exposed to the wind flow. The vertical axis rotors are, in aligned arrangement on oblique V-like extending radial arms, pivotally mounted to a common and fixed vertical shaft for self-orientation in the direction of the wind and for angular self-adjustment by bringing the "V" arranged arms closer to each other.

  • Patent number: 4032257
Abstract: A mill, particularly windmill of the horizontal or Chinese type having a l shaft supporting a vane rotor provided with a plurality of vane shafts rotatably mounted therein and with vanes secured to these vane shafts which vanes, when engaged by a wind flowing in a direction perpendicular to the mill shaft, will swing about their vane shafts from an operating position in which the vane is held by a stop on the rotor at an angle to the wind, to a free position parallel to the wind when reaching the lee-side of the rotor. Each vane shaft is coupled to an individual gear means carried by the rotor and engaging a stationary annular ring gear common to all gear means which gear means comprises a one-way free-wheel drive whereby when a vane swings about at the lee-side of the rotor an additional rotary driving force is transmitted to the latter.

  • Patent number: 4015911
Abstract: A wind motor for the conversion of wind power to mechanical or electrical power or other form thereof includes a plurality of wind receptors which have openings therein for the passage of air therethrough during operation of the wind motor, especially when the receptors are moving against the wind, so as to diminish air resistance (drag) opposing such movement, thereby increasing the efficiency of the wind motor.

  • Patent number: 4004861
Abstract: A wind driven prime mover which is driven by a plurality of arcuately shaped wind vanes pivotally mounted on a rotatable turntable. The wind vanes are pivotally mounted on the turntable with their pivot axle disposed in a vertical plane. The pivots are positioned adjacent the periphery of the turntable, with the pivots being spaced equi-distant from each other and equi-distant from the axis of rotation of the turntable. The bottoms of the vanes are arcuately shaped, with the length of the arc being slightly longer than the space between the pivots so that there is an overlap between adjacent vanes. The convex surface of the vanes face outwardly to provide a concave inner surface.

  • Patent number: 3976396
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for converting fluid flow kinetic energy into rotational kinetic energy comprising a body mounted for vertical rotation about a longitudinal axis thereof, a plurality of horizontally spaced vertically extending vanes pivotably mounted on said body and rotatable between an open position in which the vane extends outwardly from the body and a closed position in which the vane lies with one surface thereof adjacent the surface of the body, and the plurality of feather members spacedly mounted longitudinally of each frame and extending outwardly and transversely of the surface opposite to said one surface of said vane, said feathers being dimensioned to abut said body when said vane is in said open position to provide stop means for each vane, the center gravity of each vane being located at the position in the feather members such that on the rotational speed of the body reaching a preselected maximum all the vanes assume a position between the open and closed position w

  • Patent number: 3942909
Abstract: A vertical axis wind-driven rotor which combines effective utilization of the energy in a strong wind with maintenance of effective torque at low wind speeds. In one embodiment, the rotor has a reservoir of liquid located near its base. A plurality of tubes radiate outwardly from the reservoir along the base, then rise upwardly along the outer edges of the rotor vanes. In another embodiment, a Savonius type rotor is modified so that the vanes are hinged, and the trailing edge of each vane weighted, whereby in a wind the rotor starts in a fully open condition and automatically feathers itself at high wind speeds.
