Abstract: A horizontal axis wind turbine with a ball-and-socket hub is disclosed. The hub enables horizontal axis turbines with two or more blades to teeter in response to wind shear gradients. The new hub design for a turbine equipped with three blades has been modeled using modified FAST code and has shown significant advantages over present three-bladed turbines with fixed hubs in reducing loads on the blades, tower, main shaft and bearings. The new hub design for a turbine equipped with three blades has also shown significant advantages over present two-bladed teetering turbines in reducing loads on the blades and tower. A likely additional advantage of a ball-and-socket hub equipped with three blades over a teetering hub with two blades is that wider teetering ranges are possible due to the significantly reduced likelihood for resonant teetering.

Abstract: An engine arrangement has a gear assembly that drives a first propeller assembly. The gear assembly is driven by a power drive shaft that joins to the gear assembly at a first side. The engine arrangement has a static conduit that extends along a longitudinal internal cavity of the power drive shaft. The conduit penetrates the gear assembly such that a portion of the conduit projects from an opposing second side of the gear assembly. The engine arrangement has one or more first fluid supply lines routed along the static conduit between a hydraulic pressure power source and the first hydraulic actuator. A first hydraulic rotating coupling is mounted to the projecting portion of the static conduit. The first fluid supply lines fluidly communicate with the first hydraulic actuator via the first rotating coupling.

Abstract: A system adjusts the pitch of a variable pitch propeller having a non-rotating side and a rotating side. The rotating side of the propeller has a hub, a propeller blade mounted to the hub, a propeller shaft that rotates the hub and propeller blade, and an actuation system. The actuation system has a screw and a piston. A motor has a non-rotating component in communication with the non-rotating side of the propeller and a rotating component in communication with the actuation system. When the motor increases speed, the screw rotates and the piston moves laterally in a first axial direction to decrease the pitch of the propeller and, when the motor decreases speed, the screw rotates and the piston moves laterally in a second axial direction to increase the pitch of the propeller.

Abstract: A wind turbine arrangement is disclosed that includes a substantially vertical tower mounted to a ground surface, a horizontally-extending hub rotatably fixed in a substantially horizontal plane to an upper end of the tower, at least one radial support arm rotatably fixed with a distal end of the hub, each support arm including a turbine mounting means at a distal end thereof, and at least one electricity-generating turbine selectively mountable with the turbine mounting means of the any of the support arms. An elevator means adapted to raise and lower each of the turbines between an upper loading position adjacent to a lower loading position of each support arm, and a lower loading position adjacent to the ground surface. In use, each support arm may be rotated to the loading position for receiving one of the turbines thereon. The support arm is then rotated about the hub into an operating position.

  • Publication number: 20090155075
Abstract: A blade pitch driving apparatus of a wind-driven generator and a driving method therefor are adapted to receive an external electrical power and impel a blade toward a corresponding pitch angle according to a pitch command. The apparatus includes an UPS, a permanent magnet synchronous motor drive (PMSM drive), an AC pitch motor (ACPM) and a hub controller. The hub controller normally switches the external power to the PMSM drive, receives the pitch command and control the ACPM to impel the blade toward the corresponding pitch angle. When the PMSM drive fails or the external electrical power is interrupted, the hub controller switches the electrical power of the UPS to the ACPM and controls the blade being impelled toward a feathered position.

Abstract: An assembly for changing the pitch of fan blades rotatably attached to a hub includes a main drive shaft configured to rotate the hub. The main drive shaft is rotated by a first motor. A secondary drive shaft is coupled to the main drive shaft via a gearing system located within the hub. The secondary drive shaft is also driven by a second motor. When driven by the second motor, the secondary drive shaft manipulates the gearing system to alter the pitch of the fan blades.

  • Patent number: 6276898
Abstract: A variable-pitch marine propeller system has a propeller unit for mounting on a drive shaft, and a power unit including a stationary annular hydraulic cylinder for operating the propeller unit, a hydraulic remote control unit being fluid-coupled to the power unit. The propeller unit is provided with a shear pin assembly that is serviceable for replacing sheared pins without removing the propeller unit from the drive shaft. An annular piston of the hydraulic cylinder is coupled to a ring-shaped actuator yoke by a roller thrust bearing, the actuator yoke axially displacing a mating yoke of the propeller unit with which the actuator yoke is allowed to rotate. The piston operates in a sealed environment for the exclusion of water from the separately sealed surfaces of the cylinder itself. In one configuration, the propeller unit is replaceable without disturbing the sealed environment of the annular piston. The control unit includes a hydraulic control cylinder that is operated by a threaded piston rod.
