The propeller includes a hub member driven by the motor and a can member disposed coaxially relative to the hub member the can member having a fore and an aft end. The hub member and the can member define therebetween an annular port for the passage therethrough of a portion of the exhaust generated by the motor. Supports extend between the hub member and the can member for supporting the can member coaxially relative to the hub member and a plurality of blades are secured to and extend from the can member with each of the blades being equidistantly spaced relative to each other. Each of the blades defines a leading and a trailing surface such that the propeller rotates in a direction from the trailing towards the leading surface in normal forward motion.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1985Date of Patent: June 30, 1987Assignee: Dennis Propellers, Inc.Inventor: Timothy A. Patent number: 4643642Abstract: A multi-bladed propeller and shaft assembly is provided in which air can be fed to the propeller blades to reduce the effects of cavitation. A shaft leads to a multi-bladed propeller and carries a sleeve formed with inlet passages and axial and radial passages leading to the respective blades. A slip ring supported in an anti-rotation device allows the shaft sleeve to rotate within axially spaced bearings of the slip ring. Axially spaced air seals together define with the body of the slip ring an annulus within which inlet passages rotate. Each seal is formed as a multiplicity of arcuate segments resiliently biased towards the sleeve and having movably sealed end face portions to maintain pressure tightness. The body further has a radial flow passage for admission of air under pressure to the annular space and a flexible fluid connector connects the radial flow passage to an air supply line leading from the hull structure.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 1985Date of Patent: February 17, 1987Assignee: Vickers Public Limited CompanyInventor: Eric R. Patent number: 4631032Abstract: An exhaust apparatus for a water jet propulsion boat having an engine exhaust passage provided inside an impeller shaft. The exhaust passage opens into the water jet at a position rearward of an impeller. Thus, the length of an engine exhaust pipe can be reduced, and it is possible to reduce the space required for installation of the exhaust apparatus. Since the engine exhaust gas is discharged into the water jet at a position to the rear of the impeller, no cavitation occurs at the impeller portion. Further, it is possible to utilize the engine exhaust gas as a gas layer constituting a pneumatic bearing for supporting the impeller shaft.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 1985Date of Patent: December 23, 1986Assignee: Kawasaki Jukogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventor: Hiroshi Nishida

Patent number: 4566855Abstract: A marine propeller hub has an axial hole therein having a wavy, non-cylindrical surface consisting of a plurality of alternating peaks and valleys. A closely fitting resilient insert slips into the axial hub hole of the propeller hub and has an outer surface with peaks that extend into the respective valleys of the axial hub hole. The resilient insert has a cylindrical axial hole therein with a plurality of longitudinal keyways disposed in the surface of that hole. The keyways receive respective keys rigidly attached to the outer surface of a spline driver adaptor sleeve, the inner surface of which has keyways that receive the splines of a drive shaft of a marine motor. The resilient insert transfers torque from the driving shaft to the hub without slippage if the torque is less than a predetermined amount, and absorbs shock if the propeller strikes a rock or the like by allowing the peaks of the hub hole to compress the peaks of the resilient insert.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1983Date of Patent: January 28, 1986Inventors: John J.
