  • Patent number: 11585355
Abstract: An electric submersible pump (ESP) with reduced vibration is provided. In an implementation, an ESP section has radial bearings placed at shaft locations of reduced vibration to reduce wear. The locations of reduced vibration are selected to avoid areas of high vibration and vibrational waves that reinforce each other due to structure resonance and natural excitation frequencies. In an implementation, a radial bearing is positioned at a node of reduced vibration of a standing vibrational wave. In an implementation, a succession of multiple radial bearings are spaced at different intervals from each other to avoid conventional even spacing of the bearings that causes standing waves, resonance waves, and vibrational waves at natural excitation frequencies. In an implementation, a span between adjacent radial bearings is selected to spare other adjacent bearings at different spans the effects of vibrations that may extend over a range of excitation frequencies in the ESP section.

  • Patent number: 8985972
Abstract: An electric motor of an electric submersible pump is electrically isolated from a power conduit for diagnostic testing of the power conduit and wet connection components in place within a wellbore. The electric motor is electrically connected to the power conduit through a wet connection assembly having motor leads in electrical connection with a transfer contact and a receptacle assembly disposed on a tubing string having a supply contact electrically connected to the power conduit. Electric power flows through the power conduit, through the supply contact, through the transfer contact, and through the motor leads to the motor. The supply contact and the transfer contact are separated by a sliding sleeve that hydraulically inserts between the contacts, insulating the transfer contact and grounding the supply contact for testing. The contacts may also be separated by a relative rotation of the assemblies that grounds the supply contact for testing.

Abstract: An electrical submersible pump assembly has a centrifugal pump with stages, each having an impeller and a diffuser. A shaft extending from an electrical motor rotates the impellers. In the stages, a thrust runner is coupled to the shaft for rotation in unison. A bushing is non rotatably mounted in a receptacle in the diffuser. The bushing has a bore that receives the body of the runner in sliding, rotating engagement. The bushing has a thrust receiving end engaged by the thrust face of the runner in rotating, sliding engagement to transfer thrust from the runner to the diffuser. An elastomeric compliant member between a cylindrical exterior of the bushing and the receptacle allows limited radial movement of the bushing relative to the diffuser.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing seals around the motor leads and other conductors in ESP's. In one embodiment, elastomeric boot seals are positioned within annular spaces around motor leads in an ESP motor. When the motor is filled with dielectric oil, the elastomeric material of the boot seals absorbs some of the oil and swells. High temperatures may also cause the material of the seals to expand. Retainers which are not subject to swelling are positioned around the boot seals, thereby preventing the boot seals from expanding away from the leads. The retainers thereby maintain the seal of the boot seals against the motor leads.
