Abstract: Flow parameters in a fluid delivery assembly are determined by monitoring pressure responses and processing those responses along with information regarding the fluid flow. In one aspect, a processor controls the pump to pump flow quantities in accordance with a pseudorandom code. Portions of the resulting pressure signal sensed at the conduit is averaged, and the averaged values are then decoded in accordance with the pseudorandom code. An estimate of the equilibrium pressure is generated from the decoded average pressure values, while a summation of the pressure samples is generated from the undecoded pressure signals. The resistance to fluid flow of the system is determined from the estimated equilibrium pressure and pressure summation. For low flow rates, a processor controls the pump to pump fluid in a series of fluid boluses, with each fluid bolus delivered in the beginning of a separate timeslot.

  • Patent number: 6123509
Abstract: A pressure valve used in a cleaning apparatus. The pressure valve is provided between a pump motor and a cleaning injector. The pressure valve includes a valve body, a floating valve rod, a ball valve, a compression spring, and an adjusting screw. The valve body is connected to the water supply system via pipings (A, B, C) so that starting and shutting off of the cleaning injector can alter the water pressures in the individual chambers of the valve body, which then causes the opening and closing of the ball valve. Due to the changes in the water pressure within the chambers of the pressure valve, a floating valve rod within the pressure valve will press against a micro switch to control the starting or shutting off of the pumping motor.

  • Patent number: 6116869
Abstract: The present invention is a pumping system which mixes liquids with a well-controlled proportioning and flow rate. The pumping system according to the invention comprises a liquid mixing device (MX) placed upstream from a pump (P). The liquids are taken from vessels (RA, RB), cyclically introduced, in a determined proportion, in a mixing chamber (9) through alternate opening of on-off solenoid valves (EVA, EVB). The system is controlled at the input by using a damping means such as bellows (11A, 11B) in antechambers (8A, 8B) in order to avoid the effects of velocity discontinuities at the time of the opening and of the closing of the valves. The delivery of pump (P) is controlled at the input as well as at the discharge end. The system may be used for liquid chromatography plants.

  • Patent number: 6074170
Abstract: A pressure regulated electric pump is characterized by a positive displacement double acting reciprocating pump driven by an electric motor through a planetary roller screw. A controller senses the pressure of liquid at an outlet from the pump and varies the speed of the motor in a manner to maintain the pressure substantially constant. At a constant flow demand from the pump the motor is operated at a substantially constant speed. As flow demand rises and fans the instantaneous pump outlet pressure falls and rises. The changing pressure is sensed by the controller which makes incremental changes in the speed of the motor to cause the motor to speed up during a pressure fall and to slow down during a pressure rise, in such manner as to maintain pump outlet pressure substantially constant.

  • Patent number: 6071408
Abstract: To provide performance particularly in handling supercritical extraction systems, a specially designed pump includes a cam-driven, single-plunger with a cam having a profile that enables the pumping system to avoid destructive reverse torque on the cam, gear train and drive motor after the cam passes top dead center. The fluid volume leaving the pump is determined by measuring only pressure or other parameters related to flow and movement of the plunger. Measurement of the fluid volume leaving the pump is useful for recording or indicating the flow rate while the pump is operating.

  • Patent number: 6068448
Abstract: A high pressure hydraulic pump apparatus constituting a two-stage pressurizing hydraulic booster combining a pair of plunger pumps. The first and second pumps are driven into a push-pull synchronous operation at the equal stroke with each other. The per-stroke displacement of the first pump is greater than that of the second pump. The first pump draws by self-suction the liquid from a reservoir while the second pump is on the pressurizing and delivery stroke. When the first pump is on the delivery stroke, the liquid pressurized to a certain intermediate pressure by the first pump is sucked into the second pump. During the next reverse stroke the second pump further pressurizes and discharges the liquid while the first pump effects the suction stroke.

  • Patent number: 6059536
Abstract: An emergency shutdown system for a water-circulating pump monitors the vacuum on the influent side of a pump. The system includes a vacuum switch connected to the influent side of the pump by a vacuum line. The vacuum switch is connected to a pump shut-off switch which is, in turn, connected to the motor of the pump. When one of the influent lines leading to the pump becomes clogged or blocked, the vacuum switch, through the vacuum line, senses the increased suction and delivers an electrical shut-off signal. The pump shut-off switch opens in response to the electrical signal, thereby interrupting line power to the pump. Audible and visual alarms are also electrically connected to the vacuum switch. A main switch, including on, off, start and vacuum bypass positions, is included for manually activating and deactivating the pump motor and for enabling the pump to operate under selected high vacuum situations without deactivating the alarms.

  • Patent number: 6022195
Abstract: A vacuum system comprises, as an integral assembly, a vacuum pump with drive motor, a purge valve, a roughing valve and an electronic control module. A cryogenic vacuum pump and a turbomolecular vacuum pump are disclosed. The control module has a programmed processor for controlling the motor and valves and is user programmable for establishing specific control sequences. The integral electronic control module is removable from the assembly and is connected to the other devices through a common connector assembly. In the turbomolecular pump system proper introduction of a purge gas through the purge valve is detected by detecting the current load on the pump drive or by detecting foreline pressure. To test the purge gas status, the purge valve may be closed and then opened as drive current or pressure is monitored. After power failure, the controller will continue normal drive of the turbomolecular pump so long as the speed of the pump has remained above a threshold value.
