  • Patent number: 10774626
Abstract: A plunger with expandable mating pad elements arrayed circumferentially about the plunger's body sealed to the plunger and biased to expand the plunger assembly's outer circumferential surface toward the inner surface of the tubular within which the plunger assembly is designed to operate. The gaps between the pad elements are minimized by having the adjacent pad elements slidable against each other along two sets of surfaces along essentially the length of the interface between adjacent pad elements, one surface set being approximately axial to the plunger and the other set being approximately radial to the plunger's longitudinal axis, and in this way reducing the available pathway in the gap between adjacent pad elements for fluid to bypass the plunger assembly.

  • Patent number: 9175776
Abstract: A technique involves a packer formed as an expandable packer with an internal expandable bladder. The expandable bladder is formed with a section that is radially enlarged relative to an axial end of the expandable bladder when the bladder is in a relaxed state. The bladder configuration enables use of a reduced expansion ratio while still allowing expansion of the packer to a desired large diameter.

Abstract: A pump (100) includes a pump block (102) including a heater (140), a middle block member (120) and an upper block member (122). Cylinder sleeves (130) are disposed between the middle and upper block members, and a piston assembly (160) is disposed in the block with pistons (162) reciprocatingly disposed in the cylinder sleeves. A drive motor (90) drives a twin gear assembly (170) and slave gears (168) to drive the pistons. Headers (104, 105) channel fluid from an external source to the cylinder sleeves, and from the cylinder sleeves to the heater. The heater includes a plurality of heaters such as cartridge heaters (150) that heat the received fluid. In the preferred device, A-side and B-side component are simultaneously pumped. The heater includes A-side and B-side flow paths for heating the components. The pressurized fluid(s) is dispensed through outlets (108, 110).

  • Patent number: 6045335
Abstract: A differential pressure operated free piston for lifting well fluids from a subterranean reservoir to the surface through a well conduit. The free piston includes a piston body adapted for up and down sliding disposition within the conduit and a sealing assembly carried in a cylindrical space surrounding the piston body. The sealing assembly includes upper and lower juxtaposed sets of longitudinally separated cylindrical segments providing relatively smooth cylindrical surfaces on the exterior thereof for sliding and sealing contact with inner walls of the conduit, the upper and lower set of segments being radially oriented so that separations between the segments of the upper set and separations between the segments of the lower set are not aligned, providing a seal which, when pressure in the well conduit near the surface is subsequently reduced, sufficiently elevates the piston and well fluids thereabove to the surface.

  • Patent number: 5427504
Abstract: A gas operated plunger for lifting well fluids from a subterranean reservoir to the surface through a well conduit comprising: a plunger body slidably mountable within the conduit having an upper portion, a lower portion and an intermediate cylindrical portion of reduced diameter; and a sealing assembly surrounding the intermediate cylindrical portion of the plunger body. The sealing assembly may include a plurality of longitudinally divided cylindrical segments of relatively smooth cylindrical surfaces for sliding and sealing contact with the well conduit walls to provide a seal which allows the plunger to gravitate through the well conduit to the reservoir and provides sufficient sealing upon an increase in gas pressure therebelow to elevate the plunger and well fluids thereabove to the surface.

  • Patent number: 5253713
Abstract: An interface tool freely slidable within a production pipe or conduit of an oil or gas well capable of creating a positive seal in order to lift liquids and particulates above the device to the surface where they are collected. An internal bypass valve permits the free flow of the particulates and liquids through an internal chamber of the tool during its return descent toward the producing formation. To efficiently utilize the pressure forces of gases trapped below the tool for lifting liquids to the surface when the bypass valve is closed, an elastomeric and expansible cylindrical sleeve is provided encircling a central region of the tool. Both the bypass valve and the elastomeric sleeve are operated by a slidable mechanical push rod received longitudinally within the tool body. The rod is actuated at extreme ends of the production pipe or conduit and detents provide for positive positioning of the rod during ascent and descent of the tool during well operation.

  • Patent number: 4531891
Abstract: The mandrel of a fluid lift plunger carries pads retracted from a tube string by the continuous bias of collapsing springs. A control rod is displaceable relative to the mandrel causing a change in the force of detent springs which exert a continuous radially outward bias on the pads. In the detent held position assumed by the control rod during upward plunger travel, a higher detent spring force is exerted on the pads to overcome the collapsing springs and hold the pads in wiping contact with the tube string.

  • Patent number: 4363606
Abstract: A free piston pump for use in a well for permitting gas to lift fluid to the well surface. The piston pump includes a body which supports a plurality of vertically and horizontally spaced piston segments which are sealingly engaged to form a piston. The segments are radially movable inwardly for allowing the retracted piston pump to move down the well conduit by gravity and are radially movable outwardly for engaging and sealing against the interior of the well conduit whereby gas under pressure lifts the piston and fluid thereabove to the surface. The segments are retracted when the pump reaches the top of the well and the segments are expanded when the pump reaches the bottom of the well. The segments include an inner arcuate surface and a tubular spring member is longitudinally positioned in the body and sealingly engages the inner surfaces.
