Choke Devices Patents (Class 42/79)
  • Patent number: 5155291
Abstract: A shotgun barrel assembly for producing a prematurely enlarged shot pattern has an axially position on barrel and a barrel extension mounted in fixed position on the forward end of the barrel. The barrel defines a shell chamber and a bore which communicates with and extends forwardly of the shell chamber and opens through the forward end of the barrel. A portion of the bore forward of the shell chamber is generally cylindrical and terminates at a conically tapered forwardly diverging portion which opens through the forward end of the barrel and has an axial length at least equal to eight times the diameter of the cylindrical portion. The barrel extension defines an expansion portion which forms an extension of the bore and which has a diameter greater than the major diameter of the conically tapered portion. Compensating slots may be formed in the barrel extension portion.

  • Patent number: 5105717
Abstract: A compensator for fire arms includes a barrel bushing, outer tubular housing, and an inner tubular choke which defines an annular gas expansion chamber; the inner tubular choke has a plurality of holes formed therein which provides gas communication between the bore of the barrel, interior of the inner tubular choke, and annular gas expansion chamber; and spaced longitudinally extending slots are provided to the top and bottom of the outer tubular housing for gas communication between the annular gas expansion chamber and atmosphere, the ratio of the area of the slots in a top surface of the outer tubular housing to the area of the slots in the bottom of the outer tubular housing are about 3 to 1.

  • Patent number: 4757741
Abstract: The invention is of a sleeve or cylinder, receivable on the muzzle end of a rifle or the like, which has at least one vibratory reed or finger projecting therefrom. As rounds exit the muzzle, gasses from the firing intrude between the bullets and the reed(s) or finger(s) causing vibration, uneven gas compression within the muzzle end of the weapon and against a given side of emerging bullets. As a consequence, the aimed accuracy of the bullets is slightly disturbed so that the bullets impact in a wider target zone than the otherwise precisioned accuracy of the weapon would indicate.

  • Patent number: 4713903
Abstract: Two types of choke assemblies are provided to enable a shotgun of specific gauge to be modified in the field to receive a shotgun shell of smaller gauge and also to provide a choke of desired characteristics to suit the needs of the shooter, as for skeet or trap shooting or hunting. Each choke assembly comprises an aluminum tube insertable into the breech end of the shotgun barrel and has integral external bosses to ensure a snug fit. The breech end of the tube is chambered to receive a shotgun shell and the muzzle end of the tube is internally threaded. In one type of choke assembly, a choke is screwed and glued in the threaded tube end at the factory and the entire assembly is installed in the shotgun in the field. Thus, with a plurality of tubes of the same gauge, each would have a different choke permanently attached.

  • Patent number: 4713904
Abstract: An automatic shotgun choke is provided which is attached to the muzzle of a shotgun barrel and can be adjusted manually by a device mounted within and extending from upper portion of the choke so as to selectively produce a choked and unchoked muzzle. In a modification gas pressure from a fired shell turns fan blades within the choke to operate a choking action upon a charge as it leaves the muzzle.

  • Patent number: 4712323
Abstract: The rifle presents the smooth-bore barrels, and the enbloc having the maximum calibre and the same calibre constituting a set of three barrels, arranged, in section, in the form of an equilateral triangle, with lower vertex. The firing device, correspondingly, presents a set of three firing-pins, hammers and fixture levers, able to produce, with the single trigger, a progressive sequence of shots, providing, in combination with differentiated necks, specially designed, a complete range of types of shot.

  • Patent number: 4467546
Abstract: A choke for a shotgun barrel comprises a sleeve body having an outer cylindrical surface and an inner surface with a conical rear section and a cylindrical front section. The conical section rearwardly widens from a mouth thereof and the sleeve body is positioned rigidly within a seat provided longitudinally in the gun barrel. The gun barrel has an inner diameter equal to the outer diameter of the sleeve body and an inclined plane surface defining a seat for receiving a bevelled extremity of the sleeve body. The inclined surface and bevelled extremity both form acute angles with the longitudinal axis of the barrel. An annular threaded projection on the outer surface of the sleeve body is threaded onto an externally threaded ferrul provided on the gun barrel.

  • Patent number: 4386477
Abstract: A method for forming a counter bore in the bore of a shotgun barrel and a choke tube insert for the counter bore. The insert includes an internal surface formed with a choke constriction for modifying the choke of the shotgun barrel and threads on its external surface for engaging complementary threads formed in the counter bore. Complementary angles are formed between the inner end of the choke tube and a ledge on the counter bore for preventing powder residue from accumulating between the threads. The method includes the steps of inserting a portion of a shotgun barrel in a frame and potting the barrel in a material which has a melting point substantially below the temperature which would affect the bluing of a shotgun barrel, but which when solidified rigidly holds the barrel when a counter bore is being reamed in its bore.

  • Patent number: 4151671
Abstract: A mechanism for remotely manipulating a rotary adjustable choke device on the muzzle of a shotgun barrel. Specifically, the mechanism consists of a reciprocatory operating arm positioned intermediate the choke device and the breech end of the barrel, in combination with a connection between the arm and device for converting the reciprocatory motion of the former into oscillatory motion of the latter, thereby varying the muzzle constriction and shot pattern. The arm is positioned so that it may be manually reciprocated by the shooter to selected releasable positions corresponding to the desired choke settings and while the gun is held in firing position.

  • Patent number: 4071971
Abstract: A device for controlling the scatter of shot wherein the barrel of the shotgun adjacent the muzzle is provided with grooves disposed at a small angle to the longitudinal axis of the barrel. The grooved portion of the muzzle is constricted to provide a converging then diverging wall portion. The roots of the grooves define a cylinder having a diameter comparable to the diameter of the barrel. The width of the grooves is greater than the size of the shot and discharge of the shot through the barrel past the grooves produces a twisting movement which provides an uniform distribution of the shot.

  • Patent number: 4058925
Abstract: A pattern control system for a shotgun and the method of making the system in which one or more choke attachments are detachably mounted on the muzzle end of the shotgun barrel and the barrel bore and one or more progressively reduced choke constrictions, either in the bore and the choke attachments or in the attachments alone, are formed at the same time in order to eliminate tolerance buildup between the choke attachment bore constrictions and the barrel bore. By adding or deleting choke attachments, it is possible to achieve the choke constriction which will provide the desired pattern pellet density at the selected distance from the muzzle of the shotgun.
