A fuel pump and piping system with nozzles is arranged to inject fuel into the ullage when the concentration falls to the predetermined value and to stop injecting fuel when the concentration rises to the predetermined value. A flammability detection system includes the detector and a controller that produces an annunciating signal when the fuel/air mixture concentration is equal to or between the upper and lower limits of the flammability range.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a low-cost and practical method for cleaning objects such as wheelchairs on a continuous basis. In one embodiment, the apparatus of the present invention is a mobile, self-contained system in which objects are cleaned and sanitized as they travel in a U-shaped path within a wash chamber. As the objects enter the first side of the wash chamber, suitably located water jets spray the objects with a mixture of detergent and water to remove associated foreign materials until shortly after the objects make a U-turn. At this point, the objects are first sprayed with a mixture containing a rinse agent and water, then with a spray containing disinfectant and water. The objects are thereafter dried by suitable drying means such as a high velocity air curtain system. The continuous washing system of the present invention preferably has a self-contained water heater to pre-heat the water prior to its being sprayed onto the objects.

The hydrocarbon concentration of the heated cooling fluid flow is monitored as it is directed out of the heat exchange apparatus for return to a cooling tower. However, if a concentration of hydrocarbons is detected in the fluid flow which indicates possible process fluid leakage, upstream and downstream cooling fluid gate valves as well as a process fluid gate valve are automatically closed.

    Abstract: A novel reactor for reacting and subsequently analyzing sub-picomole quantities of a sample organic molecule. The reactor includes a continuous capillary connected between two valves that control fluid flow in the capillary. One part of the capillary forms a reaction chamber where the sample may be immobilized for subsequent reaction with reagents supplied through the valves. Another part of the capillary passes through or terminates in the detector portion of an analyzer such as an electrophoresis apparatus, liquid chromatographic apparatus or mass spectrometer. The apparatus may form a peptide or protein sequencer for carrying out the Edman degradation reaction and analyzing the reaction product produced by the reaction.

    Abstract: A container for use in a microwave apparatus, in particular for heating, drying, disinfecting and/or sterilizing of materials, objects, liquids or the like, includes a lid securely attachable via a pressure lock to the container and including connections for allowing attachment of various valves, pumps etc. to monitor and influence conditions in the container. The connections are self-sealing plug connector pipes which are engageable with a complementary coupler piece of the microwave apparatus. The microwave apparatus includes an injector unit by which water or other liquid is introduced into the material to be treated, with the amount of injected water being dependent on the water content of the material. The injector unit includes a nozzle head which projects into the treatment chamber of the microwave apparatus and incorporates sensors for determining physical and/or chemical parameters.

    Abstract: A method of irradiating a biological specimen with ultraviolet, in particular a polynucleotide specimen selected from DNA or RNA, or optionally a protein. In the case where the specimen is DNA or RNA, or potentially proteins, the specimen is irradiated to cross-link the specimen to a substrate. In the case where the specimen is DNA, the specimen can also be irradiated to form thymine dimers. The method uses an apparatus which permits relatively precise control of the total ultraviolet dose received by the specimen, despite any changes of ultraviolet flux from the lamps which may occur from during any one experiment, or between a number of experiments. Thus, the method allows relatively highly reproducible results to be obtained.

    Abstract: A method is described for centering and aspirating containers filled with a body fluid and having different diameters, in which the containers are situated on a moveable tray having receptacles for holding a plurality containers of different diameters. The tray is then placed in a pivotable transporter within an analyzer having a scanning and an aspiration station situated along a transport path of the transporter. Scanning elements at the scanning station sense and fix by contact the position of the container and tray respectively so as to locate the center of the container being scanned. Signals from sensing elements aligned with the scanning elements align and position an aspiration probe at the aspiration station to coincide with the centerline axis of the container in order to withdraw all of the body fluid contained therein, regardless of the container diameter.

A local area network provides communication between each of the remote laboratories and the central monitoring station. A computer interface provides bi-directional communication between analytical instruments, robots and peripheral devices and a computer. The system employs a robot which is responsive to computer commands and capable of performing mechanical functions.The mechanical functions include manipulating an analytical instrument, transporting the specimens to be analyzed through a variety of locations, and the manipulation of the container in which the specimen is housed.

    Abstract: An automatic continuous multinominal analyzer comprises suction tubes to be inserted into vessels containing a reagent, each suction tube having a pair of electrode lines. The contacts of each pair of electrode lines are located above the suction port of the suction tube. Hence, the contacts are isolated from each other when the level of the reagent in a vessel is lower than the contacts, even if the reagent still remains in the vessel. If it is detected that the contacts in a vessel are isolated, this indicates that the vessel is almost empty. A display indicates a vessel which is almost empty on the basis of the result of the detection as to whether the contacts in the vessel are isolated. After a vessel is indicated on the display, the controller continues suction of the reagent and an analysis operation until the reagent in the indicated vessel is reduced to the minimum level which can be extracted through the suction tube.

    Abstract: An analyzer is described including a mechanism for scanning containers having variable diameters arranged in a tray and filled with body fluids, and for fixing the container and tray relative to an aspiration station for purposes of centering the aspiration probe to the containers. The scanning and positional centering mechanism include two movable scanning elements and a sensor which is associated with both elements and can be activated by them. The scanning elements are arranged normal to a pivotable transporter providing a transport path for the containers and preferably by means of two spring elements, retained in initial positions towards the transport path. By pivoting the transporter from a tray track to a scanning station for the containers, the scanning elements are moved to end positions and the sensor produces a signal which will depend upon the diameter of the container as positioned at the scanning station.

The fluid stream flowing through the chamber sweeps air and condensate from the chamber and creates a partial vacuum within the chamber. The steam flow rate is controlled to establish the desired exposure temperature within the chamber. Vacuum is controlled to establish an exposure pressure at which steam is saturated at the exposure temperature. The exposure phase commences after the exposure temperature and pressure are established within the chamber.
