  • Patent number: 5752539
Abstract: Filtering apparatus includes two or more passages (2) acting in parallel, each having an extended filter (12) which passes through inlet and outlet ports (48, 49), flowable preferably sealed by solidified plugs of the flowable substance such as a polymer being filtered. The flow of such substance to one passage can be terminated so as to permit filter advance under conditions of zero pressure drop, whilst flow through the other passage continues. Filter advance can be assisted by extrusion of a sealing plug in the outlet port under the pressure of such substance from the other passage which is still filtering. In additional or alternative mode, flow into a passage is terminated and a secondary outlet (20, 21) in that passage is opened. This creates a counterflow under the pressure of substance from the other passage, which cleans the filter. The secondary outlet can be sealed by a plug which is extruded during counterflow.

Abstract: Cleaning of vacuum presses is facilitated by providing a vacuum press housing that is composed of pivotable housing elements which are in turn pivotally attached to the press frame. The horizontally hinged cylinder halves that serve as housing elements of the preliminary press are connected by way of a flange connection to a sieve plate holder which is likewise arranged on a U-shaped support of the press frame so that it is pivotally movable horizontally. Arranged displaceably at the other end of the press is a joint washer with radial and lateral sealing means. The vacuum chamber which can be raised and lowered vertically and which can be pivoted horizontally is releasably connected to the joint washer by snap closure means. Pivotal movement of the vacuum chamber is ensured by a hinge connection to the U-shaped support. The vacuum chamber is placed upon the filler opening of the lower press, and is secured by means of snap closure means.

  • Patent number: 5267847
Abstract: A compact and precision extrusion system for extruding strips of rubber compounds with profiles of accurate dimensions. Strips of rubber compound are uniformly heated and mixed in an extruder and then passed through a low pressure drop strainer to remove foreign matter. The strained compound then is fed directly into a gear pump which delivers precise volumes of the rubber compound immediately into the spread chamber of an extrusion head after which it passes through a die to form a precise strip of the rubber compound. The strainer and extrusion head are movably mounted with respect to the gear pump for axial separation from the gear pump for easy removal of the rubber compound from the various components of the system to facilitate compound changes. A control system regulates the speed of the extruder to provide a near constant pressure at the entrance port of the gear pump to precisely regulate the rate of extrusion of the compound from the extrusion head.

Abstract: Pultruded profiles are manufactured as a die station which is fed with resin via a pump. The core of the profile is formed by granular material fed to station from a hopper through the interior of a hollow duct which is essentially vertically disposed, above the station, so that the granular material is moved under the influence of gravity. The exterior surface of duct is profiled and the skin-forming materials for the profile are guided by the profiled surface to the die station. The skin forming materials are runs of cloth. The pultruded profile may be tubular or hollow so that it has both an external surface and an internal surface in which case the internal surface incorporates a further resin bonded cloth fed to the interior of the die station over the external surface of a mandrel.

Abstract: Extrusion apparatus and a method of extruding in which an extrusion screw terminates close to a breaker plate so that an annular passage surrounding the screw extends to the breaker plate. The breaker plate has flow apertures arranged around an edge region of the plate for direct communication with the annular passage. The flow passage arrangement decreases in cross-sectional area in a downstream direction whereby plastics materials do not become static in certain regions. Plastics degradation, particularly for PVC, is therefore avoided.

  • Patent number: 5062952
Abstract: Apparatus is disclosed for filtering melted plastic used in an injection molding system. The apparatus consists of a housing having an inlet and outlet with a cylindrical inner chamber disposed in alignment therebetween, and a tubular filter element threadably mounted in the internal housing. To avoid loosening of the filter element, a plurality of spiral surfaces are formed in the filter element that are exposed to the pressurized flow of melted plastic, generating a resultant force that tends to screw the filter element tighter onto its threaded mount. The threaded mount is at the inlet end of the tubular element, causing it to extend in cantilever fashion axially into the internal chamber and toward the outlet. This creates an annular discharge passage around the filter element that is unobstructed, permitting the filtered plastic to converge smoothly into the outlet.
