    Abstract: A composite yarn formed of at least two different individual polymeric fibers may be spun by directing at least two streams of different polymer melts (e.g., polymer melts of different colors and/or characteristics) to a spin pack such that one of the streams has a greater volumetric throughput as compared to the volumetric throughput of the other stream. The polymer streams are each distributed within the spin pack among individual filtration chambers so that the filtration chambers receive substantially the same volumetric throughput allotment of the polymer melt streams. In such a manner, the polymer melt streams are distributed among the filtration chambers in substantially equal throughput allotments even though the total throughput of the melt streams of each of the different polymers may be unequal. The filtered polymer melt streams may then be directed through fiber-forming orifices of a spinneret plate to form the composite yarn.

    Abstract: A method for producing a dough product from starch containing ingredients of cellular structure, to obtain a product containing at least 50 percent starch material. This method comprises extruding the ingredients by passing them through an extruder of a predetermined inner barrel diameter. In this way, a plug flow of the mass through the heated tube is established to cook the mass at a predetermined temperature and for a predetermined period.     Abstract: Filaments are produced from polymers having an inherent viscosity of at least 0.7 measured in concentrated sulfuric acid and containing in the polmer chain at least 50 percent of the repeating units. ##STR1## by melting the polymer and heating the melt to a temperature of from about 20.degree. C. to about 80.degree. C. above the melting point of the polymer, passing the melt through a filter pack having a filtering area of at least about 8 in.sup.2 and a total volume of at least about 1.2 in.sup.3 per pound of polymer extruded per hour, and containing inert, irregularly shaped particles having a mesh size of about 25 to 140 to provide a pressure drop at least about 800 psig., and extruding the melt through spinning openings of desired shape to form filaments. The process is capable of producing fibers and yarns having a dpf of about 15 to 100, a tenacity of about 1 to 2 grams per denier, an elongation at break of about 50 to 160 percent and a modulus of about 20 to 30 grams per denier.

    Abstract: A method for forming honeycomb structures by stepwise formation of channel walls reduces the pressure loading imposed by the extrudable material on a die that uses this method, facilitates the formation of well knitted channel walls, and requires only a minimum amount of lateral flow in the discharge zone to perform final interconnections between channel walls that have been substantially formed upstream of the discharge zone. The method presses extrudable material in substantially axial flow through a fist partitioning zone and subdivides the material into a series of flow segments having on their outer surfaces a portion of the channel wall surfaces formed. The extrudable material passes from the first partitioning zone in substantially axial flow while at least a portion of the channel walls formed in the first partitioning zone are maintained on the surface of the segments.

The coarse filter screen is mounted to the frame and is composed of a web of woven strands having a sufficiently small diameter so as to permit the preencapsulated core extrudate to pass through and emerge from the coarse filter screen without substantial mixing of the barrier material and the preencapsular material. The fine filter screen is supported by the coarse filter screen upstream of the coarse filter screen.

At least 75 percent of filtering capacity remains available when a filter is being inspected, cleaned or replaced. The carriers seal those channels which are not in line with filters while the carriers are out of their first positions.

    Abstract: A granulator for forming granules of cross-linkable plastic compounds in which a screw extruder extrudes the compound into the smaller diameter end of a funnel-shaped, annular conduit, the other end of the conduit facing a die with circular arrays of through-holes. The compound which passes through the through-holes is cut into granules by rotating blades having air nozzles which remove particles of the compound from the blades. The granules are received in a chamber from which they are removed pneumatically. Where the annular conduit meets the die, there are channels within and outside of the arrays of through-holes which lead to the outside of the granulator and which provide conduits for removal of compound which does not directly impinge on the entrances of the through-holes which are specially shaped to avoid accumulation of the compound between the through-holes.
