  • Patent number: 5698146
Abstract: A method and apparatus for spinning, drawing and winding a synthetic multi-filament yarn, wherein the yarn is subjected after drawing and prior to winding to a heat treatment for purposes of reducing its shrinkage tendency. In the heat treatment, the yarn advances along an elongated heating surface closely adjacent thereto but substantially in no contact therewith. The heating surface has a surface temperature which is above the melt point of the yarn. During the heat treatment, the yarn is subjected to a tension which is lower than the tension required for plastic deformation. The yarn wound by this method has a heat shrinkage tendency which is typically more than about 20%.

  • Patent number: 5695709
Abstract: A method and apparatus for producing highly-oriented polyester sheet comprises a two-stage drawing process. The first drawing stage is performed within a zero-gap milling and stretching roller assembly comprising a pair of opposed rollers defining a nip therebetween and wherein the rollers are rotated in opposite directions at different lineal surface velocities such that a predetermined draw ratio is defined therebetween. Amorphous polyester sheet is conducted through the nip of the opposed rollers, and as a result of the simultaneous milling and stretching of the polyester sheet, the amorphous polyester is transformed into crystalline polyester as a result of orientation-induced crystallization. The crystalline polyester sheet is heated above the glass transition temperature (T.sub.g) immediately downstream of the nip defined between the pair of opposed rollers, and an exit bridle assembly is disposed downstream of the pair of opposed rollers.

Abstract: An apparatus for preparing meatballs which comprises a meatball forming device and a meatball cooking device. The meatball forming device comprises a housing, which has a top opening communicating with a lower output tube. Between the top opening and the output is a mechanism having planar belts entrained around two pairs of rollers, said belts being opposably rotated by turning a crank handle on a single roller. The faces of the belts contact one another, and each face has matching, aligned semi-spherical indentions. Ground meat is pushed into the top opening, and the roller crank is turned to opposably rotate the belts. Meat is squeezed into the spherical space between the belts and communicated through the output. The meatball cooking device comprises several cooking trays with indentions for receiving a number of meatballs. The cooking trays are detachably connected to supporting members and may be stacked on top of one another in superimposed fashion.

Abstract: A die assembly (10) for controlling extrudate profile dimension. The die assembly includes a die block (12) having a feed passage (16) for movably supporting a diverter member (13) within the die block, and first and second die block passages (18, 20). The diverter member (13) includes a diverter passage (32) and first and second feed openings (34, 36) interconnected by the diverter passage. One of the first or second feed openings (34, 36) has a larger diameter than the other of the first or second feed openings. The diverter member (13) is movable with respect to the die block (12) for directing extrudate flow via the diverter passage (32) through the second die block passage (20), to thereby vary the profile dimension of the extrudate exiting the die block. The die block (12) additionally includes a disposal passage (22).

  • Patent number: 5158781
Abstract: Apparatus for handling large diameter horizontally extruded plastic tubing includes a number of driven endless belts positioned around the path of travel of the extrusion to transport the extrusion while it cools. The belts are individually driven either by hydraulic or electric motors, the speed of travel of each belt is continuously monitored and a feedback system including a microprocessor controls the driving motors so as to maintain the speed of travel of the extrusion at an adjustable controlled value. The belt positions are hydraulically controlled to accommodate tubing of a range of sizes and the level of the hydraulic fluid in its reservoir, its pressure and its temperature are also monitored by the microprocessor. In the event of component fault or failure, the microprocessor returns the affected belt or belts to manual control so that the product line need not be shut down.

Abstract: Plasticized polyvinyl butyral sheet optionally containing a gradient color band is formed by continuously extruding a sheet having a predetermined region across its width formed from melt issuing from a die at an increased mass flow rate in comparison with other portions of the melt forming the rest of the sheet and then forwardly distorting such sheet immediately after forming by preferentially stretching the side containing the predetermined region to form an arcuate shape of substantially uniform thickness. Arcuately shaped sections are then cut from the sheet to form discrete, shaped interlayer blanks having improved thickness uniformity and dimensional stability providing improved performance when used in laminated safety glass.
