Publication number: 20080274224Abstract: An injection nozzle is provided having a nozzle body, defining an inlet channel, an outlet channel and a connecting channel therebetween for communicating a working fluid into and out of the nozzle body. A shut-off pin is slidably mounted within the nozzle body and having a spigot mounted thereto. The shut-off pin is movable between a closed position, where the working fluid is substantially blocked from moving from the inlet channel to the outlet channel, and an open position where the spigot is withdrawn, unblocking the working fluid from moving from the inlet channel to the outlet channel. An actuator is operably connected to the shut-off pin to move the shut-off pin from the open position to the closed position. Moving the shut-off pin from the open position to the closed position generates a region of low pressure in the working fluid in the portion of working fluid trailing the spigot.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 4, 2007Publication date: November 6, 2008Applicant: HUSKY INJECTION MOLDING SYSTEMS LTD.Inventors: Josef GRAETZ, Douglas James WEATHERALL, Giuseppe Edwardo MARICONDA

Publication number: 20030107151Abstract: An array of dies having a closed configuration is used in a method and apparatus for making a closed composite article that comprises multilayered materials. In the method and apparatus, at least two extruders are used to extrude at least two material streams through the die array to provide an extrudate comprised of alternate layers of material from the at least two material streams. The compositions in the two material streams can be the same or different.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2002Publication date: June 12, 2003Inventors: Patrick John Reilly, Dale Roy Norton

Patent number: 6547551Abstract: In a conventional multilayer crosshead, only one pressure sensor is disposed in the inlet of the annular passage, preventing monitoring of membrane discontinuities; parison thickness is not constant; as the crosshead body is not cooled and parison temperature is high, a long time is required for cooling during blow molding, preventing the reduction of the molding cycle. A multilayer crosshead according to the present invention includes pressure sensors disposed in at least two positions of the annular passage so that the flow rate is controlled and monitored so as to eliminate the pressure difference between the pressure sensors, and parison temperature is lowered to a greater degree by a cooling jacket with a built-in heater disposed in the crosshead body so that a blow molding cycle is shortened.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1999Date of Patent: April 15, 2003Assignees: The Japan Steel Works, Ltd., Yachiyo Kogyo Kabushiki KaishaInventors: Yuzo Omi, Syouji Satou, Takatoshi Watanabe, Akira Rikiishi, Hajime Kudo, Yoshitaka Ohno, Toshio Kagitani, Sohei Masaki, Shoji Abe

Publication number: 20030047833Abstract: An improved method of applying a controlled pressure to the flapper in a curly puff production apparatus. The present invention uses a pneumatic system to apply a pressure to a flapper. The invention utilizes a rotary actuator that applies a near constant pressure to the flapper. Alternatively, a pair of telescoping tubes connected to the flapper and an air pressure source can apply a near constant pressure to either the proximate end or the distal end of the flapper. Further in the alternative, a linear actuator can be used to provide a near constant pressure to the flapper. As a result of applying a constant pressure to the flapper, the pitch in the curls of the curly puff extrudate can be more predictably controlled.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2002Publication date: March 13, 2003Inventors: Eugenio Bortone, Edward Leon Ouellette

Publication number: 20030049348Abstract: A process and apparatus for the production of a spiral or coil shaped puffed extrudate. A tube or other peripheral containment vessel is placed at the exit end of an extruder die. A force or resistance is then applied on the extrudate downstream of the glass transition point, thereby causing the extrudate to back up and coil in the containment vessel.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 10, 2001Publication date: March 13, 2003Inventor: Eugenio Bortone

Publication number: 20020185765Abstract: The invention relates to a method for adjusting an extrusion die in an extruder by recording at least one master flow curve (40, 41) in a first extruder to which the extrusion die is optimized, in which curve the volume flow is entered over the pressure, which master flow curve (40, 41) is obtained in a measuring channel (20) which branches off in the extruder, the extrusion die or in any interposed adapter part from the flow channel (4), and the repeated recording of flow curves (30, 31) in the same or similar measuring channels (20) as in the first extruder after the assembly of the extrusion tool in the extruder to be checked and adjusted, and the purposeful change of process parameters for such a time until the flow curves (30, 31) correspond to the master flow curves (40, 41) within predetermined tolerance ranges.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 8, 2002Publication date: December 12, 2002Inventors: Frank Dorninger, Gordon Fattmann, Oliver Krull, Andreas Limper, Meinhard Schwaiger, Stefan Seibel
