    Abstract: An apparatus and method for molding balloon catheters is disclosed. The balloon may be molded by providing a polymeric tube within a mold having an interior cavity in the shape of the desired balloon. Microwave energy, which may be generated by a gyrotron, may then be directed toward the mold, to heat the polymeric material without heating the mold. Once heated, pressurized fluid may be injected into the tube to blow the polymeric material against the interior cavity whereupon the material can cool to form the balloon or can be further heatset by additional microwave energy and be cooled to form the balloon. In accordance with one embodiment, microwave energy can also be used without a mold to form a medical device. A polymer extrusion apparatus is disclosed utilizing a microwave energy for heating polymer feedstock material within the extruder tip and die unit just prior to formation of the extrudate product.

    Abstract: An extrusion type nozzle includes a block having therein a manifold for distributing liquid along a coating width, a slit for allowing the liquid distributed in the manifold to pass through the slit, and a discharge outlet for discharging the liquid from the slit. The slit includes a first portion and a second portion provided closer to the discharge outlet than the first portion. The nozzle further includes a first forming member for forming a wall of the first portion of the slit. The first forming member is displaceable to change a gap of the first portion of the slit. The nozzle can apply plural types of liquid having viscosities different from each other uniformly and liquid having a viscosity changing a lot.

    Abstract: An apparatus for forming an extruded ice cream bar with variegated inclusions. The apparatus includes a main die having a section with sidewalls extending between upper and lower end portions and defining a cavity. In the preferred embodiment, a plurality of intermediate dies for insertion of the inclusions are positioned within the cavity and spaced from the sidewalls of the main die. The intermediate dies gradually and progressively change in cross-sectional shape from being round at the top to the desired shape of the inclusion at the bottom. As the ice cream flows through the cavity of the main die, it passes along and about the intermediate dies through which the inclusions are flowing. Each intermediate die is preferably fed by two tubes so that the final shape of the inclusion at the bottom of the intermediate die is fully and evenly filed.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a buffer tank as is substantially used for ensuring a constant supply of the spinning machine with a polymer melt in spinning machines. To this end the buffer tank is provided with a compensation chamber whose volume is variable in response to a pressure prevailing in the polymer melt and to a volume flow variation. The polymer melt flows from a polymer melt entry opening to a polymer melt exit opening through the compensation chamber. It is the object of the present invention to make the flow through the compensation chamber uniform. The residence time of the polymer melt in the compensation chamber shall thereby be prevented from having a wide range, the latter resulting in an irregular quality of the yarns produced by the spinning machine because of the time-dependent, mechanical and chemical properties of the polymer melt.

The material introduction portion is provided with a casing having an introduction passage connected to a housing of the screw extruder and an opening through which the material is charged, and right and left introduction screws provided in the introduction passage. The introduction screws are provided with lead portions wound in opposite directions and arranged so that the lead portions are engaged substantially in a non-contact state. The introduction screws are rotated so that the material is moved in a direction opposite to the opening at the engagement portion.

A multilayer crosshead according to the present invention includes pressure sensors disposed in at least two positions of the annular passage so that the flow rate is controlled and monitored so as to eliminate the pressure difference between the pressure sensors, and parison temperature is lowered to a greater degree by a cooling jacket with a built-in heater disposed in the crosshead body so that a blow molding cycle is shortened.

    Abstract: An improved method of applying a controlled pressure to the flapper in a curly puff production apparatus. The present invention uses a pneumatic system to apply a pressure to a flapper. The invention utilizes a rotary actuator that applies a near constant pressure to the flapper. Alternatively, a pair of telescoping tubes connected to the flapper and an air pressure source can apply a near constant pressure to either the proximate end or the distal end of the flapper. Further in the alternative, a linear actuator can be used to provide a near constant pressure to the flapper. As a result of applying a constant pressure to the flapper, the pitch in the curls of the curly puff extrudate can be more predictably controlled.
