The method including the steps of feeding a melt parison of crystalline resin into the space between molds, clamping the molds, blowing a pressurized fluid into the interior of the parison so as to cause the parison to be into close contact with the inner surfaces of the molds and to solidify the parison, wherein, while the parison and the mold inner surfaces are in close contact, the temperature of inner surfaces of the molds is maintained at a temperature from a temperature 10° C. lower than the crystallization temperature of the crystalline resin to the melting point of the resin, and the parison is removed from the molds after the parison is cooled through introduction thereinto or discharge therefrom, during or after blowing-in of the pressurized fluid, of a cooling medium not higher than room temperature.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for blow molding plastic articles which utilizes one or more fixed needles and one or more micro vents associated with a blow mold cavity. Each needle has a first passage associated therewith through which vacuum is supplied to pull the molten plastic about the needle and a second passage therein through which air under pressure is introduced to tear the plastic and blow the article to the confines of the mold which has been closed about the plastic parison. Micro vents facilitate exhausting air which is about the parison. Preferably the second passage for compressed air is provided by a central bore and the first passage for the vacuum is provided by an annular space about the fixed needle. In a modified form, the fixed needle comprises dual air passages. Provision is made for utilizing plural molds with controls for supplying air and vacuum.

Abstract: A parison 4 of hot thermoplastics material is delivered into a mould 1 comprising two mould halves 2, 3 which are closed towards one another. A stress force is applied to the wall of the parison 4 either by a projection 5 extending from one of the mould halves 3 and/or by blowing air at a low pressure against the parison 4 through a blow pin 10. The parison 4 is then penetrated by the blow pin and high pressure air is blown through the blow pin 10 to inflate the parison 4 against the mould halves 2, 3. The blow pin 10 is withdrawn and a formed article such as a case is released from the mould after a preset time.

  • Patent number: 5795533
Abstract: The invention concerns the manufacture of hollow plastic articles by inflating a preform (4) in a blowing mandrel. The aim of the invention is to reduce the so-called cycle time--the time interval between a preform (4) entering the blowing mould (1, 1') and the next preform (4) entering the same blowing mould (1, 1')--compared with prior art methods in which the initially open mould encloses the preform along the appropriate length when the preform is extruded from the blow-moulding nozzle, the mould then being transferred to a second station, adjacent to the tubular body receiving station, where the preform is inflated by insertion of an inflation and sizing mandrel. This aim is achieved by introducing the inflation gas into the preform, received by the mandrel, while the preform is being transferred from the first station, in which the tubular body is received, to the second station, in which release is effected.

Abstract: In a blow molding process, a fused thermoplastic polymer parison is interposed between a pair of split molds. The split molds are closed around the parison to seal the ends. A small diameter hollow needle is inserted through one of the split molds and fluid is blown into the parison forming a balloon. After the balloon begins to form, a large diameter hollow needle is inserted while internal pressure is applied to the parison via the small diameter hollow needle, and a large amount of fluid is blown in. This process is highly productive and reduces the conventional blow molding cycle by 60 percent due to the rapid cooling of the hollow article.

Abstract: The tip of the blow core on a stretch blow molding machine is slightly smaller in diameter than the neck of the preform into which it is inserted such that during both insertion and withdrawal there is no physical contact between the core and the preform. However, when the core tip is in place within the preform and the blow surge commences, a resilient sealing ring around the core tip expands into radial contacting engagement with the preform to seal off what would otherwise be an air escape route. When the air surge terminates, the ring contracts into a dove tail gland around the core tip so as to be substantially flush with the surface of the tip, permitting the core to be withdrawn without contacting the preform.
